EA Sports Engineer: Wii U is crap, < powerful than 360. No $ 3party. [Tweets Deleted]

Skyward Sword was at 3.5 million a month after release
Phantom's Hourglass sold 4.13 million as of March 2008
Spirit Tracks is at 2.61 million as of March 2010

I really don't understand why people think Zelda doesn't sell.

Yea I dont get it, Zelda is not as casual game as NSMB and Mario Kart, and COD its no gonna sell 10-20 mil.

It sells fine and Nintendo thinks it sells fine, they put out two on Wii, and will have 2 on WiiU WW HD and Zelda WiiU

Not sure if srs. That was the last Zelda game that really sold well, and it was riding off the hype of 'zomg realistic next-gen Zelda' that had been building for what, 4 years?. And even then 6 million is relatively pitiful compared to the other Nintendo franchises on Wii.

Skyward Sword MAYBE cracked 2 million. The DS titles didn't do too hot. Zelda is not among the best-selling Nintendo franchises/series. All about da Mario and the Pokeymans.

But 6million is still huge succces.... I dont get you guys.. what wrong with this fucking nINTENDO hate?? Now 6 million is like a piece of shit?? . Skyward sword cracked more than 3 million.

"OMG it was just his opinion!"

I'm a market researcher, I can totally get fired for stating an opinion that harms the company I'm working for.

I'm not sure whether he's going to get fired over this. He's been at EA for more than 13 years now. And he's saying pretty much what most people seem to think.
Yes, but most people really should leave the thinking to horses. They do have a bigger head after all. And they don't tweet asinine bullshit, because it's damn hard to type with hooves.

The reasoning is sound but not quite the clear and present danger I'd expect in someone being fired.

I don't think he should be fired. EA made him delete his tweets and remove references to their company from his twitter account. That's probably enough, though I wouldn't be surprised if I heard that he was suspended or something. I'm sure they have a company policy against speaking in public in ways that could be construed as representing the company.

Everything he said is true. Everyone in the hardcore gaming community has known this for years. Third parties have difficulty making money on Nintendo platforms and Nintendo is notoriously difficult to work with. And yes, the Wii U is underpowered. So let's not turn this into some witch hunt because the guy stated the obvious.

Yup one guy says he was just speaking the truth, I guess if I called my fat slob of a boss a fat slob I guess I shouldnt get fired since it was the truth.

the funny thing is that the best version of Need For Speed Most Wanted which is an EA game looked the best on WII U, aside from the PC version

It isn't a witch hunt. He said it in an incendiary way when I'm sure EA didn't want him saying it. When you say stupid shit on Twitter, you can lose your job. It's dumb for anyone to say anything that you wouldn't want your employer to hear about.

Also: I don't think the eShop is terrible. I think it's pretty good. I find it much easier to use than the Xbox Live marketpalce.

This. Like i said in an earlier post, even i would get fired for making myself and the company i work for look stupid. And i am just a little web developer working in a really small local agency.

It's how business works today ...

And still, is there any major evidence that he is getting fired? Looks to me like he is trying to hide everything.

I'm the only one who thinks he's not been fired?
Yes i would like it to happen because not only he said stupid things on his "official" account exposing his company but also because of the timing extremely close to the sweet billy case but i really think you are jumping to conclusions

Nah, I don't think he's fired. I don't really think it's that big of a deal. May be a harsh reprimand by the boss or something.

Opinion on outside companies is something a person that works in the public eye for a company like EA or Nintendo shouldn't have.

You don't see anyone at Nintendo ever saying they don't want to deal with EA because they are North America's worst company, two years in a row.

I don't know how it works in Canada. But I can say that EA couldn't fire him for such tweets in an EU country. Just thinking about it is crazy.

Yup one guy says he was just speaking the truth, I guess if I called my fat slob of a boss a fat slob I guess I shouldnt get fired since it was the truth.

There is a difference between saying your opinion about something and insulting your boss.

Yes, but most people really should leave the thinking to horses. They do have a bigger head after all.

Aside from the fact that it might upset some diehard fans, I don't even really think the issue is so much one of stating an opinion. He's not the first person to not have glowing things to say about the Wii U, and if he's not afraid of people on message boards taking issue with opinions they don't like, I don't think he needs to shy away necessarily from sharing his thoughts publicly. But when going the public route, I don't think it's absurd to suggest that better discretion should be employed with the phrasing.

I really didn't think that this was some wacky concept.

Ocarina of Time sold 8 millions on N64

OoT is widely considered by many to be the greatest game ever made so of course it sold so well. Of course its possible for them to do it again if they can get a high attach rate for the game and its an evergreen title.

Welp that's what I get for consulting ********. <---- LOL @ censor. I thought they'd be at least SOMEWHAT reliable for games that have been out for a long time now.

I still stand that if you're looking to describe a couple of best-selling Nintendo franchises, putting Zelda next to Mario isn't the greatest comparison, but then again, I guess all Nintendo games that don't include Mario pale in comparison to Mario's sales.

I'm not saying games have to sell like CoD, I'm talking comparable-to-Mario sales, which are, on a per-game basis, typically better than CoD (although CoD has new games every year, none of that evergreen stuff).

Also, "used to be better than CoD"*** because I'm not sure when the next time is that we'll see another 10+ million seller from Nintendo on consoles.

Ea didn't care from the get go.

Here is Madden NFL 2012 relabeled as Madden NFL 2013. Buy lots of copies!!!!
Here is Fifa 2012 relabeled as Fifa 2013 Buy lots of copies!!!

Already owned the 12 version of both why would I buy it another time relabeled as 13

Skyward Sword suffered greatly coming as late as it did. Even most hardcore Wii owners had shelved the system mostly

No-one is saying it bombs(but Nintendo have many games that sell significantly more & likely with a smaller budget too), just that placing it alongside Mario as the only games that sell on Nintendo platforms is stupid & is a sign of a lack of knowledge on the subject.

Just because Nintendo and EA has no business relationship right now doesnt mean their employees have the right to go out and burn bridges.

Anything could happen in the future

Would people find it ok if a Nintendo employee came out bashing Vita?

OoT is widely considered by many to be the greatest game ever made so of course it sold so well.

People were incredible hyped about it since the last Zelda game before it was the amazing Zelda LA.

Sadly, the Zelda hype isnt just the same today. But I guess that's for another thread.

It is a witch hunt. There's a pattern developing on GAF where if a person says something politically incorrect or controversial on twitter the pitchforks and torches come out. You're going to start to see companies telling their employees that they can't use twitter because of this nonsense and GAF will be at least partly to blame. This guy did not say anything racist or sexist. He didn't even insult rural America. He has an opinion, which, by all accounts, is true about a company. Companies are not people.

IGN Updated the story http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/17/ea-senior-engineer-the-wii-u-is-crap

broken links makes it worst because now to context is unknown
not that I think EA would or should fire the guy but deleting does not fix the image issue

I don't think we need an explanation. Wii U is selling like shit. Third party stuff doesn't do so well. The only people buying Wii U at the moment are the hardest of the hardcore Nintendo faithful (the group of people that has been getting smaller and smaller as each generation goes by) - and we know which games they spend their money on. Basically, the last of the Nintendo fans. I think this system may even be enough to cull most of them, too.

You underestimate the Nintendo diehard. As long as a Mario, Zelda, or Pokemon game is being made, the fans will still be there. I just don't get why they are in the home console business. If the only games coming out for your system are first party, why not just exit the console business which is incredibly difficult to survive in? (ask sega)

The reason Nintendo is still alive in the console business is because they managed to sell a zillion rebranded gamecubes with a snazzy controller. Not like they were selling state of the art hardware at a loss.

They got greedy and tried to repeat that success with WiiU. Selling outdated tech with a gimmick controller isn't working this time. It might have if the Wii would've actually had some fun games to play, but it didn't and now even the Nintendo faithful are weary of buying the system if the only games it's ever going to get are first party.

It was a bad strategy and it backfired. I truly feel this will end with Nintendo either burying the system virtual boy style and starting fresh, or exiting full size home consoles all together, handhelds they will probably keep.

If your bread and butter is games, as it has been with Nintendo for over a decade, then they should just go 3rd party and put Mario, etc, on the sony and microsoft consoles. They'd make a freaking killing.

IMO ALttP was also one of the greatest games ever made so I think that helped a bit as well.

Especially for two companies that have been around for ages. To be fair this guy isn't EA and he doesn't represent their future decisions of course. But right now it seems like Nintendo is indeed out of EA's plans.

EA really showing their colors
