It mainly stems from self validation.

For a lot of people, validation comes form not necessarily what their side is doing but more about what the competition isn't doing.

Then they want to further reinforce their belief by continuously highlighting the differences they classify as weaknesses.

You see all the time. Someone will go test drive a bmw and Mercedes for example. They'll buy one and then run around telling the world how the one they didn't buy was lacking and how awesome their selection is.

People are always going to be more excited about the unknown, but I think most people who've been consistently posting in here over the past weeks have been pretty reasonable and realistic. I think a lot of those people (me included) are definitely very optimistic about Microsoft's showing this Tuesday, but to be fair I was excited about Sony's February event as well.

I can totally agree they're not conducive to good discussion but it surprises me why you're being so one sided when what you're complaining about is more transparent in the posts that are attacking xbox.

I've posted here for the last 5 or so days and I haven't seen any 'omg MS will obliterate Sony' posts .... apart from the sony fanboy bashing (read, not sony, dunno where you're seeing that either) I fail to see this mass blind faith in MS. Most people here are just excited.

I would agree that there seems to be a bit of a strong Sony fan presence in 720/Durango threads. My favorite ones are the people who feel the need to state they plan on buying a PS4, in an Xbox thread. Like that is some kind of argument. You just don't see Xbots doing that in PS4 threads. Then you have the Sony fans who need to keep things "real" by shooting down any positive prediction or rumor that comes up. It's just needless chatter.

I do understand why they are doing it though. It's pretty clear that this is MS race to lose. Rather than focus on why people should buy a PS4 they try to highlight why they shouldn't buy a 720.

Its hard to see everybody intentions as for my case, I don't like Microsoft due to my last job, but I don't want to see them gone from the business, its just that if Sony go out, then I don't see a nice future for gaming.

To me, the thread has seemed pretty civil and mainly full of Xbox centric regulars with a healthy dose of people just interested to see what Microsoft musters. You'll always get opposing viewpoints. Stop with the everyone's against Xbox whinging. It's been painful enough hearing certain people babble on about GAF being some sort of Sony hive mind. Wish those people would just use an ounce of common sense and realise the reaction has mainly been towards the barrage of negative rumours lately, Microsofts reluctance to squash them, and the general core nature of many gamers here who dislike all things motion, not just Kinect.

About needing so desperately for their corporation of choice to be #1 again that they'll shit on every bit of good/bad news that comes along for the competition. It's weird to see someone love a company that much, especially knowing those companies don't actually give two shits about you, but it exists for every console, every phone maker, every computer maker, every OS. It's weird.

This is the biggest crock of shit and this is coming from someone who has all the systems and plan to buy both in the fall. I think you're mostly on point nib, but the bolded is questionable. The entire gaming community (not just Neogaf, but the internet gaming community at large) is going to look really gullible next week when "online requred / online only" gets debunked. The biggest and baddest negative rumour is a fantastical piece of fiction. The willingess on the part of everybody to believe that silly rumour has been nauseating. "If that becomes true" so easily becomes "I can't believe it's happening" when people are unable to think critically. What amounts to nothing more than a negative rumour (not a fact, not a known feature of the console, but a rumour and nothing more) becomes the central talking point for or against the console.

People have every right to post critically, and it should always be welcome to make opinionated statements based on real features (like the Xbox Live paywall, or paying for multiplayer, or Kinect motion gaming, etc...).

Sadly this is pretty much true. As someone who always has every system I find it difficult many times to just even talk about a specific game because many times THAT turns into a tit for tat. But I am equally sure I have dropped into it as well on occasion and I friggen hate it. I have to admit though its been very enjoyable in this thread as it has seemed to really stay somewhat locked down to being hyped or excited about the new tech, even many who aren't MS fans at all. Good times and an overwhelmingly positive time.

the number one thing id love out of the xbox reveal is a standard physical motion controller, but that probably wont happen. occulus rift support is number 2, and graphics parity with the ps4 of around 1.8 tflops and 8gb gddr5 is number 3.

I don't buy the "can only afford one console" excuse either, there is no justification for it. I worked with a guy in his late twenties who was exactly like you described, after months of being in the same office I used to dread the topic of games coming up, was so glad when he quit

I don't think the community will feel gullible. I think the community was extra vocal, scathing and loud just to ensure Microsoft heard loud and clear and changed course in case there was a chance it could have been true. Rather than feel gullible (Edge has a great rep, as does Eurogamer and Vgleaks based on their PS4 accuracy) I think everyone will just feel relieved and start unclipping their wallets again. With Nintendo basically knocked out and drunk, it's important both the Nextbox and PS4 do well. Competition is a must if we the consumer are to get the most bang for our buck.

Not sure, but the rumored device that's Microsoft's equivalent was called the codename Foraleza. It was in those leaked MS docs from a few years back. Looked more like glasses that added VT stuff rater than full on goggles like the Rift though.

The bolded part is factually untrue. I can name several people in this thread for doing that, but it's silly and juvenile. Trust me it happens in any thread that isn't third-party. And by saying "you don't see xbots saying it" is where people have started to say there's a persecution complex. There definitely is, but you may just not notice it.

And one trillion "lol kinects" isn't circle jerking? Most posts saying "destroy" or "obliterate" are exageratting. If you can't see that maybe it's time to relax a little.
