Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

It just seems like every time I say that, even around friends, they go off on my like i'm insane or something. But you're right. I re-watched the 360 premier from MTV a long while back. Man that was horrible, music acts, celebrities, it was just lame all around. They also called it an "entertainment" box on many occasions so that just reiterates that it was their goal all along.

Microsoft trojan horse'd the 360 into living rooms though games, and now turned it into a general "entertainment box". They're looking to do it again with the 720 but this time the PS4 is gonna put up much more of a fight as a gaming console to cripple MS's strategy. If Microsoft can't get a foothold they might wind up in the same position as Sony this gen.

I'm enjoying Metroid: Other M lots. It really doesn't deserve the hate. I would go further, and say that it's one of the best looking games on the Wii. Also, I would be delighted if future Metroid games went for that design and art direction.
Is this for real? Well that IS controversial. You need something better than a single flame shield though.

Games need to stop trying to emulate movies and reality, and instead should focus on crafting engaging and active creative experiences for the player. I don't give a shit about how real or visceral you think your game is if all you have me doing is following an npc and mowing down AI enemies in a hallway. To hell with setpieces, quicktime events, tacked-on multiplayer, and everything else that seems to define a blockbuster game anymore. Developers have traded creativity for money, and bred a generation of gamers that wonder "y cant metroid crawl."

-The original Dead Space is a poor horror game, and an incredibly mediocre game in general.

-Bully is the best game Rockstar have ever made.

-Kane and Lynch 2 is a great game.

-Saints Row 3 is an awful, awful game.

-Oracle of Ages/Seasons are better than A Link to the Past

-Controller > KB/M

-Super Mario Sunshine is better than the Galaxy games.

-Deus Ex: Human Revolution is on par with the original.

-Metro: Last Light is better than Bioshock Infinite.

Assassin's Creed 1 is the most boring, pointless game I've ever played. My PS3 save file from 2007 sits <30 minutes from the ending of the game unfinished because I realized exactly what I said in my first sentence at that point and just stopped playing it straight up. Didn't even want to see how it ended.

I suppose the only reason I played it that far in the first place because I was expecting it to magically become Assassin's Creed 2 or something in the middle, i.e., it would start being a good game.

With an 85 on Metacritic I consider it to be the single most overrated game of the generation. It's a 4 or 5/10 for me.

Oh, this reminds me:

-There is not a single good game in the Assassin's Creed series.

There we go, list done (for now).

More boring than Assassin's Creed? That would be achievement of epic proportions.

Well I'm glad to hear that I'm not in the minority on that line of thinking. My friends would say otherwise. I've also gotten absolutely roasted a few times on here for stating that.

I haven't played Metro, but I know for a fact I wouldn't enjoy it as much as Bioshock.

I also haven't played Kane and Lynch 2, but I hated the first one and the visual style of the second one really turns me off to the point where I won't play it until I notice it on a Steam sale for $5. I feel like it deserves a chance, though.

Yoshi's Island is the most contrived, awful piece of shit to ever grace the SNES, GBA, or any other platform it might infect. I cannot imagine the intense and absolute disappointment fans of SMW1 felt when this festering pile of shit masqueraded as SMW2. How people can call it a good Mario game, not even the best Mario game, not even the best game on the SNES, not even the best game ever, but simply a good Mario game, confounds me. It is the epitome of awful. Everything from the awful hit mechanics (a crying baby, that's fun!) to the "has potential, but is fucking awful" egg system, to the stupidly designed levels makes me want to vomit.

Fuck you Yoshi.

Streets of Rage 3 has the best soundtrack of the series.

It's funny how Miyamoto shat on Donkey Kong Country for its players putting up with mediocre game mechanics as long as the art was good, when Yoshi's Island is a much better example.

SMW was a step back from Mario 3, a lateral move in the wrong direction. Crying Mario aside, Yoshi's Island is one of the most unique, well-designed games out there.

DKC really WAS nothing special, and that it got more attention than DK '94 in the same year was a crime.

- The EX Street Fighter games not only are great, they have the best music in the series.
- Super Monkey Ball is still fun, you GCN-era nostalgia-blinded haters.
- All 3 PS3 models are hideous looking (mine being white helps a bit, though :P)
- Classic aqua blue 3DS and clear blue SwanCrystal are the nicest looking pieces of gaming hardware ever made.
- Realistic racing simulators are as fun as watching paint dry. They're mostly tech-porn that is meant to be watched and not played.
- You're not missing anything if you don't play iOS/Android games (this might not be controversial, but enough people tend to think it's wrong to not enjoy this mostly diluted, insipid [IMO] form of gaming).

Console gaming is truly inferior to pc gaming in every way. The only reason everyone isn't into pc gaming is because they are lazy/ignorant.

Also, the DS and PSP >>> 360 and PS3.

I haven't played Metro, but I know for a fact I wouldn't enjoy it as much as Bioshock.

Typing the Bioshock Infinite one was tough...very tough.

I think my overwhelming praise in the OT was a little premature. Don't get me wrong, I still love the game, but not as much as I thought I did. I find the original Bioshock to be much better (it's still my favourite game of the generation).

Metro really surprised me. I did not think I'd like it as much as I do.

I have an iPhone 5 with a bunch of games installed that I never play. When I'm bored I usually read Twitter or NeoGAF on my phone instead.

I haven't really enjoyed a mobile game, truly. I keep trying them, but I would always rather do something else on my phone when the situation for free-time arises.

pokemon, animal crossing, harvest moon, pikmin all have one thing in common - they are completely un-interesting

ios/android gaming is absolute trash, only game i have ever enjoyed enough to finish was the ios version of dead space. all the other big talked about games, i spend the couple bucks to get and delete after ~10 mins of boredom

i can't stand the art style of most anime games, to the point where i can't play them

People who brand NSMB series as 'lazy efforts, looking the same, etc.' are fucking ignorant and dumb. One could just as well say the same about Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles and CD - After all, they have their Green Hill Zone equivalents, familiar sprites and superficially, they don't seem any more different than NSMB games. However, there are differences in all cases. Same goes for Metroidvania or Mega Man 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10. Except they really aren't the same, and it's rather unfair to beat them with a stick.

You know, there's a difference between stating your controversial gaming opinion and just being rude and insulting. There's plenty of people who feel that way on GAF, and for good reason: they re-use the same assets!

Your argument doesn't even get off the ground because those games didn't all share assets, as the NSMB series has been proven to. Sonic 2's Sonic was an improved edit of the original and in Sonic 3 & Knuckles both Sonic and Tails were almost completely redrawn.

oyGz50g.png

Furthermore, there is no Green Hill equivalent in either Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles and both have level designs that are radically different from the rest of the series. And about the only thing that stays the same in all the Mega Man games is Mega Man's sprite: the levels and bosses (even though elemental powers get re-used a lot) all look completely different from one another, because when Capcom did re-use stage graphics they did it in such a way that most people would never notice.

In comparison, it took Nintendo three titles in the series to produce a grass level that didn't look almost exactly the same.

I don't appreciate being called ignorant and dumb for acknowledging what you don't.

100% yes. Usual arguments include :

PC gaming costs too much
Constant driver updates
Can't play it in my living room.

Obviously all complete tosh.

Link to the Past, while certainly influential, is a mediocre game that was improved upon greatly by just about Zelda to follow.

Super Metroid, while fairly good, doesn't hold a candle to the Prime series and is crippled by shoddy game design purposefully shoehorned in to make players purchase a game guide/Nintendo Power.

Platinum is the best of the mainstream Pokemon games due to being the most well-rounded when it comes to a mixture of gameplay, story, and roster capabilities. Gen III had the best Pokemon designs, followed fairly closely by Gen V.

Apollo Justice was just as good as the Ace Attorneys that came before it, and easily better than Justice for All.

The SNES is a highly overrated system that primarily gets love because of people that grew up with it and its games. The Wii and DS are easily the best Nintendo systems when it comes to library quality.

The Sonic the Hedgehog series isn't that bad and most of the Sonic character are very interesting, as proven by the Archie comics and when they're in games that aren't Sonic 06.

Put me in the category that thinks Sunshine is better than Galaxy. No opinion on Galaxy 2 though, haven't played it.

Also there are only two types of people, those who appreciate Yoshi's Island and those who didn't have childhoods.

:P

Starcraft, LoL, and DotA are really boring to play. Final Fantasy 13 wasn't that bad, a little more content it could of been on the same level as FFX. :)

Aria of Sorrow is the best Castlevania and its quality is far to be matched.

It's definitely one of the two best Metroidvanias.

The two DS Zeldas sucked. They are way too easy and "central dungeon" is a terrible idea.
Every other Zelda game is excellent and amazing. (Not counting Zelda II as a Zelda game.)

Not an unpopular opinion.

Oh and Zelda II? One of the highlights of the series. Stupid traditionalists.

What is this I don't even.

Super Metroid is practically timeless, and has much better flow than the Prime games.

The SNES is a highly overrated system that primarily gets love because of people that grew up with it and its games. The Wii and DS are easily the best Nintendo systems when it comes to library quality.

Wut.

The DS may rival the SNES, but not the Wii. The Wii may have had some great games, but not nearly as many, especially owing to the 3rd party situation.

I think you can only hold that opinion if you were simultaneously god of Starcraft, LoL and Dota and yearn for a challenge.

I don't appreciate being called ignorant and dumb for acknowledging what you don't.

Read it again. I said 'superficially', they don't SEEM any more different - I actually agree with you that they are different. There is a difference. Some might say that Mushroom Hill and Angel Island Zones are the Green Hill equivalents - Again, 'superficially', it would appear to be the case until you actually play it and realise that's far from the case. I recall many people being critical of the same criticisms you mentioned re: Mega Man, too; Still, I enjoyed those games. Those NSMB levels aren't the same. It's true that they have grass worlds, desert worlds, etc., but the level designs are different, and they play differently. The first one on the DS is a throwback to the earlier games. The second one on the 3DS is based around coin collection. The one on the Wii is based around local multi-player, and the one on the Wii U continues that trend, but allows the GamePad user to assist or troll the other players. Also, there are different ways of completing the levels. Re-using assets isn't an issue for me - you can use them to design different levels. In the case of NSMBU, that was in raw form at E3 2011 as NSMBMii, then revealed at E3 2012, so it had been in development for quite a while - there are plenty of levels in those games, too, so those games would've been treated with more care than they're given credit for. The point I was getting at was that I don't believe any of those titles are 'lazy efforts', and I don't believe that they should be beaten with a stick in the way that they are. But that's my opinion, and I don't apologise for it. I imagine that some will disagree, and that's fine. Opinions are not facts.

Most videogames are too hard.

Or more correctly, they lack the difficulty levels and variable sliders that would allow a much larger audience to enjoy the game.

Most videogames are too hard.

Or more correctly, they lack the difficulty levels and variable sliders that would allow a much larger audience to enjoy the game.

On the other hand, people complain that they can get through a game by running and gunning/button mashing when playing on a higher difficulty (as it was meant to be played) stresses a player's skill better and the intricacies are more apparent.

Although the worst approach is just increasing enemy damage and health with difficulty. Truly terrible.

But that's my opinion, and I don't apologise for it. .

Oh yes, I remember where the point of my post was to ask for you to apologize for your opinion and not to call you out for calling anyone who doesn't share that opinion "fucking dumb and ignorant".

You want to talk opinions, lets talk your apparent intolerance for others.

those NSMB levels aren't the same. It's true that they have grass worlds, desert worlds, etc., but the level designs are different, and they play differently.

But aside from the levels in NSMBU that do look different, all the above world types you mentioned look almost identical from game to game. Contrast this with SMB, SMB3, and SMW which all featured differing styles of the same level types. Nintendo could have made SMW look like a visually updated SMB3 if they wanted to, but chose to give it a whole new style.

No one is arguing that the level designs aren't different, but the graphics are largely the same, in many cases re-used from the game to game, and each game is built on the exact same engine while in previous generations Nintendo would start from scratch, tweak the physics enough to give each game a different feel from the last.

After seeing the thread about Alan Wake 2, I guess my controversial gaming opinion would be that I really liked the story in Alan Wake.

-DMC2 was my first DMC game and I actually liked it. Played the rest (1, 3, 4, DmC) and they were clearly better but I didn't mind DMC2.

-FF8 is my favorite final fantasy game in the series, though the rest are pretty good in their own ways.

-I cannot stand Final Fantasy Tactics, or any other tactics games (Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, etc) for that matter because the combat is too different and way too slow paced for me.

-Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a terrible game. I had to force myself to complete the game because it was terrible. Didn't like the gameplay, graphics or the annoying baby mario to say the least.

-Uncharted 3 was meh. 3 had some great moments but the overall game wasn't that great. Had to force myself through this game as well. Uncharted 2 was way better.

-MGS4 is an excellent game. Honestly I really liked all of the MGS games in the series.

-I prefer Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes over the original MGS (though the original MGS is a classic that I love too).

-I hate most sports games (Madden, FIFA, etc). I also hate rehashes of the same game every year. Take a fucking break every once in a while instead of rushing out a game to cash in on it.

Gah!, the OP says it clearly, no trolling!

Halo is a mediocre franchising, never understood it's success.

Good ole multiplayer fun that anyone can get into because you can run and gun and feel good.

This was evident from the first game. Everyone enjoyed it because when playing with friends it was bundles of fun, nobody ever praised it for the singleplayer campaign.

Uncharted 1 is the best Uncharted. Most refreshing, fun, vibrant, and a pure adventure experience. Just because it doesn't look as good or has the bombast of 2 or 3, doesn't mean its not better.

Gran Turismo 5 is sterile garbage and the weakest game in the series. I do hope that 6 brings it back to the glory of GT2, which is the best in the series.

Yep. I know numerous people who've never played a Halo campaign, yet they're proficient online competitors.

Persona 4 is boring as hell and all of the time wasted on making virtual friends is really annoying. I have actual, real-life friends. I don't need to waste hours and hours wooing virtual ones.

The first game's single player campaign was almost universally praised.

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is the second best game in the series after Metal Gear Solid (with Snake Eater coming in at a close third). Ghost Babel is also close up there with MGS3.

Video game music is bland background shite and people that listen to it and laud it as awesome have terrible terrible taste and should not be trusted.

Especially FF music enthusiasts. Second only to a fedora as a marker of virginity.

*stares defiantly back at you*

I have played Baldur's Gate II, and it is no Chrono Trigger.

*kicks you in shin*

*stares back unrepentantly*

It doesn't need to be chrono trigger, it surpassed it. Superior combat, story, environment, and mythos.

*flicks rubberband sharpky at your forehead*

The first game's single player campaign was almost universally praised.

I personally know of nobody who said that. It was mediocre at best with a generic sense of stylisation. I mean it was cool in a dude bro way, and people liked that including myself, but it was nothing noteworthy.

Over-hyped is the applicable term. Not shit, but nothing grand either.

Not every song was great, but there are some good ones. Dark Messenger, Seymours battle theme, and my personal favourite; Clash on the big bridge. The Black Mages also made some great non midi versions as well.

My 'controversial' opinion is that I prefer many NES era games over later entries in the same franchise that people often call their favorites.

For example:

Legend of Zelda 1 and 2 are better than A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time.

Final Fantasy 1 is better than the SNES games which are better than the PS1 games.

Metroid is better than Super Metroid.

Castlevania 2 and 3 are better than Symphony of the Night.

Super Mario Kart (SNES) is better than any of the console Kart games that came after.

------------------------------
I do love all of these games, but I really liked the earlier games, in part, because of how janky they were. I loved how the Legend of Zelda didn't telegraph where most of the secrets were. I loved how it felt like you were breaking Metroid when you would bomb through a wall that didn't seem like you should be able to go through. I even loved the infuriating invisible pitfalls of Castlevania 2's mansions.

ALTTP, Super Metroid, and SOTN seem to me to be perfectly crafted games, and they're really fun to go through, but they lack the rough edges that made the exploration in the older games feel a bit more satisfying.
