Done with Anime?

A couple times a year I'll give a few shows about three episodes to see if I find them interesting. I think the only anime that's come out in the last 10 years that I've enjoyed was Mushishi. Everything else has just seemed completely uninteresting.

Meh, I grew tired of following 3+ shows every season, so now I only watch stuff that either many other friends are watching or I find somehow remarkably interesting. I think in the past 2 years I've seen 3 shows tops, and they haven't got remotely close to my favorites (Planetes, GitS...)

I've been done for a while, hardly seen anything since 2005-6 or so. It's very hard for me to find anything I like as I have very little patience for "anime-isms" anymore.

I did recently watch Kids on the Slope and started Attack on Titan, though, first things I've been into in a long while.

people actually watch anime for the story?

People watch anime for, the action, the characters, the fanservice, the direction, the art, the music...

story?

I'm still watching anime, usually a couple of shows per season, but at this point it is more of a habit and the futile effort to find something I genuinely enjoy than having actual enjoyment. My tastes have undoubtedly changed, but I feel like anime over the recent years has really narrowed down the demographic it is targeting and that demographic has a much bigger desire or tolerance to watching the same trope-riddled drivel in a different skin than I do.

Stopped watching anime after high school. I still read Naruto and Bleach every week, since I've read them the beginning, I might as well see how they end.

Avatar choices are such a dumb thing to judge posters on.

I can't imagine the discrimination you face as someone who likes Luigi.

Honestly, I don't care if people label me as narrow-minded. I've been on this forum long enough to know the guys with Moe avatars annoy me, thus why would I value their opinions when they have a bias to the very thing I hate?
Or is the guy trying to sell me on K-ON a few posts above when this very thread is about how I hate modern Moe shite not proof enough?

I was going to recommend you Fate/Zero, a show about a modern-day no-holds-barred battle royale between magicians who summon legendary historical figures to fight for them, but since I liked something that could be described as cute once, I guess you're not interested.

I am really Intrerested in Hyouka i love a good detective serie definitely gonna check that one out soon.

Just a quick heads up if you do decide to check it out. It's not really a detective series and if you go into it expecting some decent mysteries and/or puzzle solving you will probably walk away sorely disappointed. The show is for the most part more of a slice of life about a bunch of teens and the boring things they do to amuse themselves.

One would think as an animator I might take some interest in anime, but nope. Dislike pretty much all of it (ESPECIALLY slice of life shows) save for a few series that I feel are pretty unique. Mainly I don't like all the stuff that seems to make up the backbone of most anime I've seen - the fanservice & pandering, the heavy reliance on face faults, the cliches and stereotypes. I just can't get into it.

Particular community? Try the anime fandom.
Seriously, go to GAF's Anime or Manga thread. It's the same wherever you go in fact. Moe this, kawaii, that, waifu this, smut shit that. If I wanted to have a decent conversation about a particular series, maybe one or two people would reply before the talk gets buried in "who's the best tsundere? Generic moe character with pink hair no.6328303 or generic moe character with blue hair no.7393093"
And because I like discussing and debating stories, it does have a lot to do with my enjoyment of the medium. Is it really any surprise I've been turned off by the genre when the people who actively talk about it are mostly fans of the very things I hate?

And just a heads ups guys, I have watched stuff other than Shonen. Bebop and Champloo being prime examples. Admittedly, I will probably go back and watch these series again and again, but that's because they broke the mold. I didn't feel like I was watching the same tropey characters just put into different situations like I do with most anime. However, I HAVE grown out of the medium, and I'm tired of tracking down shows that are as good as these. Sure, I could ask Anime GAF for some advice, but seeing as the majority have moe avatars? I don't really trust their opinions.
I'm just turning my back on the medium as a whole. I don't care if I miss "good" series'.
Holy melodramatics batman.

I watch maybe one or two series a year anymore. I need to read some recommendations.

I haven't found any series I've loved since Monster a few years back. And even then, I read the manga first and thought it was better.

-Try something different. I guess related to the prior point. Shows for little kids and otaku do take up much of the mainstream attention, particularly in currently-airing seasons, so it does take more work to find something more interesting. But if you do find something you like outside of the mainstream, it's even more rewarding. A tip that might help with that, I suppose, is to look for things that are not based on manga or games or books. If you can't find something new that catches your interest, then

This is the crux of the problem. Producers in Japan have lamented that they have no choice but to double down on the obsessive otaku market that's willing to pay exorbitant prices for Blu-Rays. Same goes for the Japanese game market in a lot of ways. Many of them realize though that it's just shrinking the market.

That's partly how noitaminA ("Animation" spelled backward) got started. It's a block in Japan that includes shows like Eden of the East (also a good one for OP to check out), Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, and Kids on the Slope in an effort to expand the audience for anime. A lot of the shows there are aimed at demographics like adult women and such.

Also, OP should check out Planetes as has been suggested. It's a drama, but it's a drama in a unique setting.

No Love for Tenchi?

It is more common these days though.

Does sound like you missed Gurren-Lagann though.

That's pretty much the only one I'll still watch, and only the original OVA. That's another Blu-Ray I need to pick up.

Eden of the East are shit, check Tatami Galaxy instead.

I've been out for a while. As a casual observer of the anime industry, I feel like part of it is me just growing up but part of it was a shift in target audience over the decades. I certainly don't remember the anime coming out in the 80's looking anything like what I see now.

I never really loved a ton of anime to begin with. Berserk, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and so forth. Hard science fiction and dark fantasy that take themselves 100% seriously always seemed like the smallest niche in all of anime to begin with and then eventually dried up entirely.

I still sometimes peruse the neogaf anime season threads of upcoming shows and every once in a while something catches my eye. Gurren Lagann was an alright light adventure that I could tolerate and Sword of the Stranger was fucking fantastic.

But any time I decide to check out the threads on upcoming shows odds are good that every show will look like garbage to me. As soon as I see little girls, highschool, or panty shots are involved, I'm out.

Rose-tinted glasses are funny, anime has always been mostly crap but I've always been a fan of the few gems. I remember walking down the aisles of Suncoast video and looking at the anime vhs tapes (lol!) section and being embarrassed by all the T&A fanservice and wouldn't be caught dead having any of those covers in my collection. All the people complaining about moe really don't remember Cosplay Complex, I My Me! Strawberry Eggs, Plastic Little, Popotan or Galaxy Fraulein Yuna? What about Agent Aika and the Gainax Bounce? Yeesh

I still watch anime with the reasonable expectations that there will only be 1-3 decent anime per year with maybe 1 great one. My 2013 worthy anime is Space Brothers. Decent anime are Chihayafuru and Hunter x Hunter, and the one I'm on the fence about is Attack on Titan. Hataraku Mao-sama is my guilty pleasure.

I'm essentially done with it, yeah. Outside of the few good shows per year I just don't bother. I still like watching the older stuff sometimes though.

I got into it around 2002 and fell out of love just as the Moe stuff started getting really bad in 2007. I'll still watch the occasional show but for the most part I'm done with it

I'd like state that like gaming I grew out of Anime at 10. I realized such things are for kids.

I realized talking about the gaming and anime industries was more fun.

I can't imagine the discrimination you face as someone who likes Luigi.

You have a furry moe avatar, how can I even trust what you say?

Anyone else felt this way?
I've realized the industry has kinda gone down the shitter. Everything is more or less the same moe shite. And now, looking back, I realize the series I did like (One Piece, Bleach, Toriko, .etc) weren't all that great either.

Maybe you should look for anime with a bit more depth...
Some of my favourite shows include Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in the Shell, Paranoia Agent, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Monster and Boogiepop Phantom.
Really enjoying Attack on Titan and Gurren Lagaan at the moment.

Tatami Galaxy is what you are looking for.

Art style looks great, and funnily enough I misread it at first as "Team Galaxy", and then ran into whatever this is...

Jumped ship a long time ago, at least for airing TV anime.

I'm tired of the budget look of anime: the cheap panning on still frames and other blatant methods that a studio uses to save some cash at the expense of the show's quality. I'm tired of the cliche mannerisms anime characters have to convey emotion: sweatdrops every time to convey nervousness, clenched fists for characters who are angry or frustrated and let's not forget that according to anime creators yelling = great drama. And I don't know if it's just me but the voice acting in anime seems so phoned in now that I've seen so many shows. There seems to be a very clear "way" of voice acting and its grating. This seems more apparent to me after watching Aku no Hana as its voice acting seems very organic. It's a medium so ideal for conveying emotion in characters but its so strapped for money that it keeps falling back on the same shit.

The writing in most shows suck (Attack on Titan is a recent example of this). The characters are too often one-dimensional. "I must protect those I care about." I don't think I've ever seen a good multi-dimensional protagonist who has said those words.

The sheer fact that everything is based on a manga or light novel is bothersome, not so much the fact that they're based on existing material but that the existing material is often still ongoing so the end result are shows which are inherently incomplete stories produced to sell another copy of the source material.

I let comedic shows slide. Producing the same, cliche methods of getting a laugh out of people? That's fine, I get it. It's the dramas (be it action or otherwise) that fall on their faces. I'm convinced that most shows would be better if they didn't focus on pre-teens and teenage characters. At least then we'll be rid of boring and tired, "[Protagonist] is a high schooler who is disconnected with life and/or has transferred to a new school." Wow, I wonder if he's going to make friends by the end and accept his new sur- "[Protagonist] meets new friends, engages in a new hobby and comes to accept his new surroundings." What a lesson learned! A lesson we've learned more times than we need to because almost everything must take place from the perspective of some kid in school. It's so safe and by the end of it all, it says nothing beyond the surface.

There are good shows every so often, I've seen them, but they're so rare. Out of GAF's annual top 10 shows, less than 5 are typically worthy of being in a top-anything, the rest are substantial works at best that barely pass the border of trash.

I don't watch it anymore but i'm not "done" with anime. Once i get in the mood i'll check out the highly rated shows of the past years.

Like any media most of it is crap but there's also gems like Gits or Cowboy Bebop that are really good.

I'm definetly done overly long, popular shounen shows though. I'm not able to enjoy them anymore.

I don't watch nearly as much as I used to, and rarely buy any new discs. So much of it is ether Moe or Ero these days, neither of which interests me too much by itself.

Stop watching shitty shounen designed to appeal to young boys, OP.

There will always be good stuff if you're willing to look or ask for it.

Or just read the superior comics. Animation and color is for pansies!

Another reason to watch Planetes. It's basically a soap opera, but it's a soap opera in a hard sci-fi setting.

Though generally speaking, I wouldn't even call most classic sci-fi anime hard sci-fi. I'd just say that the standard level of "hardness" for most anime sci-fi is slightly harder than most other sci-fi, if that makes any sense. If you look back at the older shows there's still a lot of fantastical shit, they just go to greater lengths to make it sound plausible.

Planetes is much closer to actual hard sci-fi though.

I'm watching Hunter X Hunter 2011. Anime has so much potential, but its held back by anime cliches :(.

Oh yeah, I was definitely getting into this but the lack of logic and the cliches started wearing me thin on it. I mean, it's still entertaining, but the arcs start taking away from the previous arcs.
They go through an entire arc to trap the leader of the spiders, rob him of his powers, then now in the next arc all of that is for nothing? Also, the power scaling gets kind of weird as the show progresses.

Stop watching shitty shounen designed to appeal to young boys, OP.

I bet you only get black consoles, too.
