Nobody wants to see another THQ, this guarantees the preowned money is split fairly instead of just going to Gamestop/Game.

You can still trade your game, but it's now on a basis where you get the same amount of money you would get before, and the publisher does too.

How many GAF threads have raged about Gamestop ripping people off with tradeins? At least now they're going to have to work for the consumer/devs/publishers. This is a good thing.

Imo your process is a rare case.

Here's a simple case:

-Metacritic gives a not excellent score(notice the "a not excellent score", not "a bad score") to a certain game.
-many people decide to wait for a price cut or to buy it used.
-people buy the game and like it a lot.

What happens now:
-no good profits with the game so there's a good chance that its developer closes.

What would happen with this mechanism
-no great profits but at least more than before(well we don't know how much the used sales do, maybe it's bigger than we think!), its developer get another chance.

We don't know how big is the used market, maybe it will give publishers/developers/whatever a good amount of money, with less chances of closures in case of flops and not forcing everyone to make only sequels to stay safe.

This essentially means we'd be paying Microsoft a middle man's fee. I say cut out Microsoft from the equation (saves us money) and just give the cut to the publisher.

Now, how about who it comes to lending a game to a friend?

I'm defending them for getting with the times and turning consoles in to PCs. Physical media is shit and needs to die out ASAP. This is step one, I wish they'd gone a step further and just ditched the disc drive altogether.

What happens when a private seller sells a game at a garage/boot sale and buyer does not know about Microsoft's system? Will it look like a stolen game? (Assuming no receipt for this kind of private sale.)

Oh I understand all that.

But Amazon actually gives more in a good number of cases (again, this is my experience, but I'm a very big reseller and have done approximately 100-150 trades through their trade-in program) than you can get second hand when you take into account eBay fees. Not only that but's easy and convenient. Gamestop prices on the other hand, not really so great. But Best Buy has good trade-in deals as well...

Basically my point is that the people in saying we will go from getting $25-$35 for our games to $5 for our games 3 weeks upon release I think are mistaken. If this reseller program was limited to one retailer then yes, it would be really terrible. Competition for the still VERY high profit margins that these retailers in the reseller program will get on used games will keep prices higher, albeit somewhat depressed compared to what they were before when private parties could sell/trade among each other.

In the end, what the program does is affectively take money away from us (by somewhat lowering the resale value of games) and puts it back in the pocket of publishers (by giving them an avenue to profit). It is the online pass program on "steroids (i.e. for all used games). We still have the option to resell games, at a depressed value yet TBD, but the publishers and devs get something too.

Maybe I'm just in the "bargaining" stage of Grief, I dunno :lol

My guess is when that person logs on to play they'll have to pay for the game or pay a fee.

This will essentially force you to trade in to the big fish instead of selling privately. That's why Gamestop isn't too aggravated by this.

you're no longer 'buying' games. you're 'leasing' them. so much of the confusion over this could be eliminated simply by clarifying this. as in, 'lease one, get one free'...

the industry, & the xbone, needs to stop using the words 'buy' & 'sell'. because they're basically claiming that they're no longer 'selling' you games. they're claiming that they're 'leasing' you games...

A solution to what, though? Giving platform / publisher / developer a slice of a pie that no other media receives? What problem were they trying to solve?

If it's "boo hoo we can't afford to make triple-A games because of that used games market!" then I'd argue that they need to look at other issues within the industry. There's an awful lot of collateral damage with this "solution."

Me, I have a fairly substantial disposable income. I'm going from spending $300-$500 a month on games (on multiple platforms, I have a PS3, Wii, and two 360s) to currently spending $20 - $40, tops. I'm going from day one on both platforms to likely skipping the XBone entirely (and this coming from a Windows Phone 7 and Surface RT owner -- I'm the definition of a MS fanboy) unless they get an amazing exclusive that the PS4 / PC doesn't get. And if Sony does this it'll be in the same boat with me.

So, at least in one case, this move is costing them big-time. And I don't sell, rent, or lend out games. I'm collateral damage here, as the rights database adds uncertainty to my ability to play my games for as long as I own them and can keep a console running.

No, when the person buys the game and they go to install it they will be prompted to buy the licence for the full price of the game from M$.

I am from Europe I never experienced a chain or shop giving me more money for a game than selling it privately. And the competition between those resellers will not be who gives consumers the most money but who can resell them for the least with still making the biggest profit margin.
 
This is atrocious. As someone who sells and purchases all of his used titles independently through ebay and craigalist, I can't support this.

There is no reason physical media is shit outside of your own personal opinion. So essentially you're saying that everyone who doesn't hold your opinion should just deal with it. Which is why people criticize you for your shitty opinions. There's no reason to limit these things outside of greed and because Dave Meltzer thinks its a good idea. Which still makes it a stupid, limiting idea.

Except unless they drop prices (which brings its own can of worms), this is what they've effectively done. They've succombed to the wishes of the EAs and just put a bullet in anything mid-tier. Because people will be much more prudent with their money now that they're fucked with a bad purchase. The AAAA gap will widen by a huge margin. Enjoy the unintended consequences. This is a disaster for the non-AAAA categories.
 
I don't see why Microsoft couldn't implement a game borrowing system in the vain of kindle/nook eBook lending....the game is disabled on your console while it is being lent out

THIS DID NOT KILL THQ. UDRAW KILLED THQ. THQ was somewhat fine (not fine not fucked) before UDRAW gamble. it failed.

The iPad needs a connection to use iMessage, which is what he was using. The only time he couldn't do it is when they'd do those radio silence things. I guess it's unfortunate they can't use their system in that scenario, but you can't design a system around a single type of employee's needs.
 
On the plus side this works amazingly well for EA. They just cancel their online pass program and now it doesn't even matter.

Seriously why is the games industry it the only media that feels entitled to a slice of that second hand money?
 
Remember folks: Publishers, GameStop and Microsoft will take almost all of the cut, and developers may barely get anything off this shit.

Enjoy the unprecedented partnership between Microsoft and EA while it lasts. I rather sell the game to someone not invested in buying one at full price, and use that money to buy a full priced new game to ensure developers get a share or two.
 
I keep waiting for an announcement that due to the unique identification system used, games will now be $69.99 standard at retail.

As far as rentals go, there should be nothing stopping Gamefly/Redbox/ect from setting up a system with Microsoft where they get unique rental only games and implement some sort of system where you need to log into your account on the XBone to verify the rental and return.
 
Retail gives me barely anything for my games. I usually sell them on Glyde and Ebay. Since that's not happening anymore I'll just wait for price drops.

it's not abotu an employees needs its about catering to a rather large demographic of the population.

There are a lot of American soldiers and a lot of them play games. By insulting them and telling them oh we don't cater for you, they completely shut that down

you have companies in the US going all out to cater for soldiers and ensure they can get what they need in the warzones because they might get shot dead over there

and then you have MS who are saying fuck you, i dont care that you are in a warzone and might like a bit of comfort from back home.
