Phil Harrison: Microsoft making $1B bet on Xbox One games

This thread is proof of why Microsoft should ignore what we say completely.

No matter what they do, they'll be hated here. Leading into the reveal, Microsoft would constantly be panned for not investing in first party development. Post reveal, they come out and say they're spending 1 billion in it, they still get panned.

So which would you guys like? You want them to invest in first party development, but not invest in it too?

Microsoft really have upset me since the reveal but what you say is true and thats just the nature of this forum, Bad Microsoft news is exaggerated to extreme levels and good Microsoft news is twisted into bad news. Its almost the complete opposite of what happens with Sony and the PS4 on here.

I didn't, I summarised the overall point. There is nothing wrong with that stance, but at the same time pushing so hard to make it seem like it isn't a deal is kind of useless.

My point is that I didn't say what you surmised from my post. You have to understand that the current situation with what we know on used games and online isn't exactly sitting well with a lot of us so it kind of sours excitement for the platform a little bit.

I'm not really in the arguing mood but I will have more clarity after E3. We all know they will have games. Just like we all know Sony and Nintendo will be bringing it.

So if you're saying it's launch window investment, Microsoft would be committing around 5 billion for investment in this gen if they want to keep the level of first party development up.

Hard to say, but it's true they have opened numerous new game studios and have planned 15 internal exclusive games this year. That's a massive investment that I can only but imagine they are confident can be recouped through subscriptions.

They are serious about Xbox One regardless and appear willing to dip in to their seemingly endless cash pile to make it a success.

And want proof that it's the worst Halo to date? Worst Metacritic score and while it's predecessors sold at or near full MSRP for years after release you could get Halo 4 at $40 or below less than a year after release. It's now down to $28 on Amazon. I don't think Halo:CE ever got that cheap on the OG Xbox.

Halo:CE joined MS's Platinum Hits and eventually their Best of Platinum Hits, which meant it was eventually available for $10 new. I think the Best of Platinum Hits line came out around the time the 360 came out. I don't remember when Halo became a regular Platinum Hits game (which were all $20 at that point), but I would think it was one of the first.

about how much is spent on exclusive DLC?

I assume tens of millions, considering Activision makes hundreds of millions from DLC alone. Limiting it to just one console for a month before releasing it on the PS3 and PC must have been done with an extremely lucrative offer.

If they were truly interested in having a strong first party presence then they would already have those first party studios. This is just following what they did last gen by kicking off a systems life with first party games and exclusive 3rd party games just to get the sales of the console rolling then almost completely dropping first party support after people buy the console.

The point I was trying to make earlier is that other console makers including Sony and Nintendo could easily be spending around the same ball park when you consider their breadth of studios. The main difference is the Sony and Nintendo aren't just saying, "hey look how many hundreds of millions we're spending on games" but are actually showing games.

And what games have they shown so far. You know, that are actually running on their console and not a PC, or a CG demo? Knack, maybe. I have seen just as much out of microsoft, and they have not even had a games focused event yet, unlike Sony. smh

That's good to hear, though naturally I'm skeptical on just what it is they spent this 1 billion dollars on. "Game development" is a deceptively loose term.

This is a ridiculous complaint.

Well they opened new studios in Osaka,Japan

Some of it is in the OP;
15 new first party exclusives this year
Several new studios opened

The rest can be presumed to go towards third-party moneyhats like Ryse and Titan etc.

This interests me most, could be where we get our JRPGs from.

This is a ridiculous complaint.

It's not a complaint, it's an observation. I wouldnt buy a MS console for exclusives when MS have shown in the past that they mostly secure exclusive content only around the first few years of a systems launch.

Tell me which exclusive games did the 360 have over the last 3 years? Halo and Forza. You might bring up the last 2 Fable games but I would say I'm being kind to MS by not counting them.

They have built and bought first parties over the last few years. See their timeline on the Wikipedia page.

They have been busy for a while and we haven't yet seen what most of those studios are working on.

Microsoft really has fucked up from the perspective of the core gamer, but this definitely is true. You don't have to look any further than this thread for Exhibit #2437.

It's kind of a bummer because it stymies interesting conversation (e.g., look at the thread on cloud gaming here, then compare it to the one on Beyond3D -- one has an informative discussion about what might be possible, and the other is like a play room full of toddlers who just had their toys taken away).

If they are opening the studios now, when will we see the games?

They showed CoD, EA sports, Forza and Quantum Break by a second party at e3. They have a lot of other second party exclusives at e3 (Titan, Insomniac, Ryse, Epic etc)

this is great news though, it's all about the exclusives!

Perhaps my reading comprehension seems to fail, but the only advantage is that I do not have to physically take the disc with me to friend, but as a tradeoff I have to memorize my ultra secure cryptical pass, ask my friend to leave the room while I enter it on their console, we then can play it on my account and his console. When I leave I have to delete the account on their console (they could have shady friends I could not know of), or leave it on it if I want to "lend" it to him and trust him to behave and not let shady people give access it, but in that case I will not be able to play the game myself (as before since I do not have the disc) and I presume not be able to log in myself and play other games since my account would be used by my friend.

Or in short: Instead of one disc per game I now have a single disc with all my games and personal information on it, but with the advantage it cannot be stolen from me on the way to friends.

Enlighten me, is my reading comprehension that far off?

Do what? LOL

I'm seriously in awe of a question like this.

You simply sign into your user name when you get to your friends. Then you can play your game with him on his system.

When you leave and sign back in at home, it's no longer associated with his. Just like user profiles on the 360.

Are people making something, so simple to understand, complicated on purpose?

Any "good" Microsoft news is basically tainted with the realities of the choices they made for their platform.

We're making a bunch of games!*

*That will require a subscription to play multiplayer, that will require your console to be online for activation and regular authentication, that you can't trade/lend/sell as you wish.

Worst troll alt account ever.

How am I trolling? Being completely honest. Nothing that Sony showed at their event was running on their hardware. But let's count those as well. So Sony showed, what, 5-6 games. MS showed 3. Not going to count the EA stuff, even though those excite me. It's not like Sony has absolutely set the world on fire and are overflowing with games.
Both will hopefully blow us away at E3, at least that is what I am hoping for. Still getting both consoles most likely, though we will see what happens.

They've been opening studios over the past few years.

WERE SPENDING A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF MONEY WE CARE BOUT CORE GAMER!

I maybe off on this but i am guessing opening new studios and hiring talent ain't cheap, and they've been doing a lot of both in the last few years. Just saying. So i really don't know what your problem is, weren't you people bitching about them closing many studios and not having enough first party content? Now they are actively rebuilding their first party, what's your problem with that exactly?

343 made some unfortunate design decisions with Halo 4, but were otherwise and extremely successful example of a first party design studio for MS designed for the core audience.

Super stoked to hear that more are on the way.

The whole forced kinect thing still frightens me, I do not want to ever speak a word to my games, or wave my arm at my tv...never.

And you know they are going to make sure that you have too, like if you don't say "good dog" in cod ghosts the beast will maul you and then you have to swing your arms like a fool.

Though, and perfectly done boxing game would be cool, like 1:1 movement perfected...but id never play it alone.

Just because it's there doesn't mean it has to be used that way, or even at all.

Kinect simply doesn't work for some genres, the good thing is that now it's in every box, they no longer need to waste time/resources developing content just for Kinect. Throw a Kinect family game out every now and then to keep a minority happy and that's it.

I hope this pay offs and give us a variety of games that we didn't have on the 360, specially for people like me that's really interested on the Uno.

How much money have they spent closing studios >_>?

Like a billon dollars demolishing the Ensemble building and another half burning the employee's corpses.

I don't know why this is a bad thing. A lot of people are railing on Microsoft in here for what appears to be perceived slights that haven't come to fruition, yet. I agree that it is now hard to give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt but $1 billion investements in games studios is a good thing as long as they aren't just making all AAA games, imo.

Actually, Sony only showed 4 also. Knack, Killzone, Destiny and Infamous.

Sony showed specs, MS showed specs.

Sony showed pics of the OS, MS showed the OS working.

Sony showed the controller, MS showed everything.

Those are the facts. How people choose to view/spin those facts is up to them.

"We will have a solution — and we’re not talking about the details today but just to take the angst out of this — that allows a user to trade that game back in and to give up the right to play that game."

It's nice to hear they have a process to de-authenticate games for resale.

are we expecting Epic to sign another deal with Microsoft this cycle? if i can get gears of war on PS4/PC I don't see a reason to pick up a Xbone at all.

Hmm.....didn't look at it that way. So why did I enjoy Sony's conference more?

As I said, how people choose to view is up to them.

Sony talked up social, MS talked up social.

Sony briefly mentioned the camera, MS briefly mentioned the camera.

Watch both reveals one after the other, they weren't that different from each other if you choose to watch them objectively.

Kinect will already be tracking you as Player One. It will see the controller in your hand and it can see if you're talking. It should be fairly easy to prevent people from fucking you over.

Also, Kinect can see your heartbeat; it will know if you truly want to go home or not. The heartbeat never lies.

:-D

Honestly I think they are throwing the "billion" dollars out there as the total they are spending.... however half of that is going to the "300,000" servers they are going to roll out.... (These are not cheap, These also are "content development?"), so to be honest... don't go in expecting a ton of extra content.

If they are not included in that number... they should come out and say they are spending close to 2 billion on gaming... and make all their investors have heart attacks.

just think about all the extra money they could have poured into games if they didn't do the NFL/networkTV deals. they spend 1B on games but still spent 400M on the NFL deal.

it always worried me that our XBL fees would go toward non-gaming endeavors

They aren't rolling out new servers, those servers already exist.

how sure is this thing. I never read about this rumor. when was it first mentioned?

Though I hate the look of the machine and just about everything else about it.
This just can't be spun to bad news in my eyes. I am trying to keep my thoughts in check for E3. I will give a tentative hope of showing-

13 total games(they may not show all they have simply due to how far along the game is)

5 Brand new IP's with some Kinect
3 Fully Kinect games
5 Old IP's with some Kinect

Regardless of EVERYTHING else. I am interested in the Kinect enhancing games but not taking them over which a good dev could do.

It was mentioned by a neogaf insider. According to him, Insomniac will announce a Xbox One exclusive at e3. Additionally, Dead Rising 3, League of Legends and Hawken will be exclusive to Xbox One.

Prediction Karak ?

How much of that is on Titan and the next Halo and Gears game? after marketing budgets there is probably little left.

Hope you like your shooters fellas.
