Phil Harrison: Microsoft making $1B bet on Xbox One games

Hmm.....didn't look at it that way. So why did I enjoy Sony's conference more?

When you know less your imagination fills the gaps. Not to say they may not have had something better or that resonated specifically with you but I'd say there's some confirmation bias in there.

To me they both showed mostly the same things with Sony being a bit tighter lipped on certain hardware details.

They have 15 first party games in development this year.

Hope you like your crow, GetemMa.

I hope you like to wave your arms around like an idiot and talk to your television while you play with digital animals and dance to Justin Beiber.

This generation's gonna be so much corporate warring between Sony and MS and Apple and Google and Ninty. Even despite some steps back across the board, like always, it seems like good times are ahead. Consoles are dead, long live consoles.

Still doesn't make up for their treatment of indies in my opinion. They went from pioneers to shutouts in the span of a generation.

You guys getting mad at them about the indie situation really ought to wait until they've addressed it officially. There's zero reason to believe that they're going to just drop the thing they, in large part, kickstarted this current gen with indies having unprecedented access to consoles. No way is MS that dumb about things.

God forbid people have fun.

By all accounts 90% of released Kinect games are the opposite of fun. Just gimmicky crap designed to take advantage of consumers who have more money than sense and can't resist gimmicky crap, especially when it looks "futuristic"

How much of that is on Titan and the next Halo and Gears game? after marketing budgets there is probably little left.

Hope you like your shooters fellas.

I know people have to admit but thsoe IPs coult potentially move 30-40 million units on their own (including COD of course). Smart move IMO

I have to say, this has assuaged my fears quite a bit. I'm still nervous about this DRM used game crap, but the lack of any real first party stuff outside of Gears, Halo and Forza from MS in the last bit of time seems to be getting fixed with this investment. I just hope this is not Kinect only type of stuff, but then again with his comments on voice and subtle movements in games still using controllers also makes me feel better. Come on MS, you can do it, make me want to own an Xbox again.

Have you personally tried them all out? I haven't so I won't comment, but my friends and I have had a lot of fun with games like Child of Eden, Kinect Sports, Fruit Ninja and Dance Central.

There's a place for all kinds of software on the market and yes, also an unfortunate amount of gimmicky crap that well informed people here and otherwise should have the sense to avoid.

Someone with an Iwata avatar ought to recognise that :P

Prediction Karak ?

Ya I will guess that number. I think that's safe considering they will have at least a little business speak in there. They could also do a nice teaser reel. But 12 allows them to go in-depth enough to show off whats truly a game and not CGI and maybe explore a bit about what each game is. It also allows them time to give detailed final information about used games, borrowing, and so forth.

This thread is hilarious.

"MS doesn't care about the core gamers."

"We have spent a billion dollars on internal game development."

"lol MS is desperate! Spending money won't help your first party!"

What do some of you want MS to do?

So the game license basically works like the 360's digital game license with a couple differences for the better.
Any account associated with the XboxOne of initial install has access to play the game on any XboxOne.
But only one account can use a game license at a time, or they have the option to buy their own license.

It was mentioned by a neogaf insider. According to him, Insomniac will announce a Xbox One exclusive at e3. Additionally, Dead Rising 3, League of Legends and Hawken will be exclusive to Xbox One.

well if that happens I will even boycott their Ratchet game. Not because I am butthurt but because I was very indiferent when they decided to go multi, and the reason they gave us.

But if they left sony only to go to MS (keeping the IP or not) I will never buy any game they make for Sony machine, exclusive or not. I hate hypocrites, that's all.

Just to repeat IF this turns out to be true.

This seems like something Phil Harrisson would have pushed MS for, considering Sony's investments in SCEE were partly due to him. Pushing for larger 1st party studios is a good thing, but you can't just outright do that without testing them in the waters first. What I mean is, its likely these studios are invested/started up by MS and if their games bomb they're more than likely to avoid purchasing them outright and have them sign exclusivity contracts instead.

Hooo boy!

That's been Microsoft's MO from day 1.

Look at their entire Xbox 1... er, original Xbox lineup. They were just throwing money at studios to get all sorts of exclusives and then throwing them out there to see what stuck. Imagine if Blood Wake had caught on instead of Halo. They'd be basing their entire gaming strategy around boat combat games today instead of shooters.

It sounds like they're just throwing money at it hope for the best.

Really? Sounds like their building studios and hiring talent. Which takes....wait for it....MONEY!

Injecting a ton of money into games. Hopefully a lot of it is going into building better first-party properties.

Anyway, it's a good move. Nice to know that even with their "media box" approach games won't be left on the wayside.

Nice, hopefully it will all fail due to all the anti-consumer features of the Xbone.
Even better if this results in everyone responsible having their bonus checks cut.

Is this $1B really just for the games, or including the NFL stuff? Because otherwise that means Microsoft has already sunk at least $1.4 Billion in to the Xbox One...and that's not even getting to the hardware or R&D of it.

Guess you guys should go recover that derailed Hype train and get it running again for E3, also my condolences goes out for all the victims lost in that disaster.

Microsoft cannot be trusted with numbers. I'm pretty positive that was some ridiculous number that he just pulled out of his ass. Just like the cloud 40% number they gave and the hardware specs that were incorrect as well.

Whilst it's crap, do you also wish suddent death on Apple, Google , Steam and every other DRM'd media that you never physically own or can trade?

I sure hope Sony don't also go down this path, or people will be eating crow big style..

For the record, not being able to sell privately and a ? (despite this OP) over whether my son can also play a game I own on a seperate Xbox (not at the same time of course) sucks balls.. but then all those other providers have been doing it for years without anyone complaining..

They have opened several new studios, including Osaka and have 15 internally developed exclusives this year. Throw in Ryse and Titan and $1 billion is very realistic.

No, because they have proven themselves to balance out the downsides with positives (low prices).
The rumours regarding used game prices suggest that MS will just use the DRM to make even more money - not cut game prices.

But that's off-topic and all I'll say in regards to the DRM.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. It's an incredibly large number to be spent on game development. It's got to include any relevant licensing fees and I imagine marketing as well, for the games, is lumped in there.

Honestly speaking, is there anything positive from their camp that you consider to not be bullshit? To anyone who has been following their hiring patterns, the fact that they're doubling down on internal development does not come as a surprise.

They make around $1B a year from LIVE memberships, don't they? Not much in the grand scheme of things, but for game development it's a huge amount.

Also worth noting that they came into this industry on the back of a $20B investment.

MS has been rebuilding their first party stable for years. Before Phil Harrison got there. Mattrick has been making games and running successful game companies since before he could legally drink.

The billion investment in games a lone is a good thing people. And most likely they will profit from it.

I thought Child of Eden worked......ok with Kinect, that was until we decided to change to the controller then we realised just how much better the game was with the controller, just like every other Kinect game, its a pos.

Why do people not bother reading before commenting?

It was wet wet dreams. At least sounded.

If it isnt obvious i'm trying drop hints that it is ;) I don't know this for absolute fact so i didn't want to post as much. And my friend at EA isn't answering my email (he isn't at DICE but may know...). But this thread isn't the first time i've heard it.

Im praying if it is exclusive that it's still on the PC. I want to play it but not enough to by a Xbone for it.

But this combined with an insomniac exclusive, a respawn exclusive, Hawken (console exclusivity, also coming to PC and phones), LoL (console exclusivity), Ryse and Dead Rising 3... all games I've heard mentioned multiple times... are going to add up to a solid lineup of third party exclusives.

This is part of the reason that it's baffling that the reveal was so bad because they do actually have games. My only guess is that the games still look like shit (which CoD did, honestly).

But, even though that list is solid, goddamn microsoft is making it hard to get excited about their box.

What does this have to do with Ratchet? They have multiple studios now, they can develop both side by side.

This is huge!

What a great way to one-up Sony having Bungie on their stage.

yea it will upset a lot of Playstation fanboys

This is the most insane thing I have heard all day.

As I said, how people choose to view is up to them.

Sony talked up social, MS talked up social.

Sony briefly mentioned the camera, MS briefly mentioned the camera.

Watch both reveals one after the other, they weren't that different from each other if you choose to watch them objectively.

You are on the largest enthusiast gaming forum in the world. What do you think our priorities are, media or games? Why not both of course but this is about games.

I'm as objective as the next and without getting into the stupid used games and online discussion, Microsoft failed to sell the system to the people who wants games.

It was wet wet dreams. At least sounded.

sounds realistic to me. Crazy buttocks confirmed Dead Rising 3 a while back, Cry engine 3 is primed for Xbox One according to Crytek, so that means Hawken should run well on the system....

And pretty much all the recent EA partner devs are now making exclusvies for Xbox One
Crytek = Ryse
Insomniac = Fuse
Respawn = Titan

All Xbone exclusives
