Phil Harrison: Microsoft making $1B bet on Xbox One games

Until E3, no matter what's revealed, MS deserve to be swore at, ridiculed, and wished death upon, because of how their reveal conference went and the PR blunders that occured shortly afterwards.

edit: it's jokes

That would be a disaster for the franchise, Reach and Halo 4 already kinda felt as if they were done in factories, all the charm of the series would be gone. :/

When they first showed the trailer for halo 4 they said it would be part of a new trilogy. I dont understand why people dont realise this.

Damn, that's one expensive Halo. Getting a bit ridiculous if you ask me.

$300 mil for two halo games seems logical.

So he can give the game to his son to play, but he has to log in for his son or else it won't work. This is so obviously deceptive.

Who said that? If it's a "child" account under the main parent account he wouldn't have to sign in for his son to play the game. But since MS hasn't said any more about it yet I would think that the best course of action would be to wait until the games portion of the reveal at E3 before you start saying Harrison is being deceptive.

I know MS - work with them for a living on some things, against them on others. I've sat in meetings with executives in various MS branches, and the anti-consumer policies are not new to me. Part of business, and no business is perfect.

I am, however, laughing at the people here defending MS and their business practices, and have screen-shotted many of these pages and sent to friends who work for MS. I personally will not buy their system for the reasons stated, but those of you who are so indignant.

Whatever, Xbots will run back to MS in droves no matter what they do or say, as long as the next Halo is good. And the MS execs know it, and make jokes about it all the time. They can screw you to the wall, and you don't care.

Just like today, if you have a game disc that you buy from the store, you can play that game. The game is now installed to the hard drive. Any user who is associated with that Xbox One can play that game. I can give that game disc to my son and he can go and take it to another machine inside the house and play it on that machine. Just like today, only one of us can play it at any one time.

The difference, though — the benefit of Xbox One is that that data can roam with me. I can go to my friend’s house. I can log in as myself into his machine. I can then play that game on his machine, and while I’m logged in, he can play it as well.

He needs to cut this out. When I loan a game to a friend I don't loan my entire library and account information.

You seem upset, have you heard Microsoft are investing $1 billion in game development?

By the way calling people "Xbots" is bannable.

I work with MS too. A lot. For more than 15 years. I won't say they are never anti-consumer but they are actually better than most companies in this regard. They are one of the most ethical companies in technology.

Obviously that goes beyond games, and I certainly understand how some people view some of the potential X1 polices as anti-consumer. But much of the sentiment in here toward Microsoft in general is just wildly misplaced.

Console warriors need to stop pretending to be hardcore gamers. You're unpaid shills at best.

WTF? Ethical? Sure if you ignore their history where they SCREWED US ALL OVER with monopoly practices, price fixing, outright killing competition, slowing browser development 5 years by killing Netscape and retiring their own IE Team.

Sure ignore all that and I guess we can count them as ehtical.

Insulting comments aside, I find it funny that you write this but are a self confessed Apple fanboy and purchase all of their products.

Hypocrite much?

Check the link I posted. Note that Apple and Google are absent from the list. If you like I can find you several more that are similar from other sources and going back several years.

If you want to permanently base your perception of Microsoft on the monopolistic business practices of the past, you're welcome to do so. But it's not based in current reality.

This all nice and good, but Microsoft is playing catch up in this area. Sony spent the last generation focusing on building first party development teams and IPs and with the way the PS4 is shaping up, it's going to pay off huge for them having all that in place. Microsoft wasted it relying on Halo and Gears of War without building up their own portfolio. It's so weird how the Xbox One is following how Sony handled the PS3....

What do we know?

We know many of the first party studios and have a rough estimation of what they're working towards.

343i, Black Tusk, Turn 10, Lionhead (possibly 2), Rare (likely 2 or 3), Twisted Pixel etc are all working on non-Kinect titles.

Not sure if they are including the likes of Crackdown 3 and PGR5 in the count, but there's that.

There was a big TheOddOne thread about some of them, following job postings etc.

My guess is that Kinect won't be a big focus for games this time round, rather functionality. The only reason it got so much attention previously was that Microsoft were obligated to provide the people who bought it with content.

That said it might be used as enhancement I'm some games, but it's too early to say.

They showed all their new studios on the map, Osaka wasn't mentioned specifically but was shown and it's known it was made to exclusively provide content catering to the Japanese market, for what it's worth.

Do you have any other info on this besides it being on that map? Just curious.

If this $1 billion number is only including internal projects, then this wouldn't cover the millions MS probably put into that canceled Obsidian project...

That said, I do wonder if that $1 billion investment will actually be seen by gamers or if some of it will be eaten up by back-room shenanigans such as canceled projects, exorbitant prototypes, studio build up, etc.

i should have stopped reading way before that.

$1 billion investment into something you don't care about seems like a waste. What gives?

Their presentation wasn't to attract gamers. They are already banking on the fact that most people that own a 360 for games will end up buying an Xbone at some point. Microsoft do actually care about games still, they just don't care as much about gamers. Microsoft is trying to do with the home console what Square did with FF7; letting everyone know that it's okay to play an RPG and still be a cool kid at school.

They did something similar at the start of the 360's life. They paid for all of these great JRPGs to be exclusive (or timed exclusive) on their console. Now that we're at the tail end of this generation, it's clear that support stopped a long time ago, and in hindsight it was definitely the wrong system to invest in for long term JRPG goodness.

This sounds like the exact same thing.

But how many of those 15 will be Kinect casual games?

Some. Probably not anymore than 5. There WILL be casual games and GAF will holler and cry about them, but people need to be realistic and accept that up front.

I seriously doubt its going to be a majority or anything like some people want to make it seem, though.

Finally we see money taking out of that "deep pocket" instead of staying in it. Letting a financially troubled company outspend you in game development is embarrassing. Now if somebody can ask Yamauchi to do the same, maybe "deep pocket" will have more of a weight in gaming forum arguments.

What do we know?

I would like to know this as well.

"Phil Harrison: So you will see at E3 some very high-powered examples of exactly that. Things that show both Kinect and Smartglass in a very supporting way to the main game experience, where the main game is played using a controller, you don't have to take your hands off the controller at any time, but you will see that Kinect and Smartglass add to the experience in a very clever way."

Awesome interview. Can't wait to see what they have planned for E3. I like the attention being paid to more subtlety with Kinect. People don't want to be doing a whole bunch of really exaggerated and thus tiring stuff just to enjoy games. Games should be mostly controller based and then Kinect can be used to add something extra to the experience, even if it's as simple as what he mentioned with regards to voice controls to control the game menus and such.

billion is MS prs fav word now
