Phil Harrison: Microsoft making $1B bet on Xbox One games

I can't be the only one to notice that within the interview where he throws money at hardcore gamers, Harrison describes a system that would only work with a near constant internet connection to verify game ownership from system to system and from person to person. Which is way worse than the used game shenanigans on every level.

Gotta make that Billion back somehow. This isn't charity.

Insomniac is not doing anything for MS exclusive. I don't know where this crap gets started. And of course MS will have games - eight of which were on the screen briefly shown. Of those, the Rare game shown looks like garbage, Halo, Forza, Ryse, were all there.

There will be a butload of Kinect including a Fitness, Sports, and Dance game that are all fully Kinect. Most everything else is Kinect-enhanced in some form or fashion. Gamers who don't like Kinect aren't going to like this show, except for the third party announcements.

There will also be CoD in some form, as well as Titan. No indie games whatsoever, as MS has treated them like dirt and they all have moved to Nintendo and Sony. If you like Indie games, this isn't the platform for you. The Xbone will sell well in the USA (because Americans don't care about anti-consumer policies), and pretty much nowhere else initially. Eventually, after they show the next Halo game, that might change.

Definitely not the system for me. I hate anti-consumer policies, and MS has shown their true hand. They couldn't win me even if they bought TLG from Sony as an exclusive. I don't support companies who do those things. But many do - look at Live

Get the hell out of here with this shit.

Doesn't sound like it to me. It sounds like, in a form of technicality, two different gamers could be playing the same copy of the same game simultaneously on two different X1 consoles so long as neither one of those gamers connects to the internet, in which the console would check to see whether or not they are the proper owner of the digital rights to this game.

That's where the presumably 24 hour check comes in. If 2 people are playing the same copy of a game at the same time, but are doing so successfully because one (one without the digital ownership) or both simply aren't connecting to the internet to prove whether or not they have the digital rights to the game, then they would only be able to get away with this for 24 hours at the most. At that point past the 24 hour mark, only the rightful owner of the digital rights to the game can keep playing the game as long as they like.

The system described by Harrison certainly doesn't require a near constant internet connection from system to system and from person to person. The single internet check in at least once every 24 hours is the ultimately tool to balance things out. If there was no internet check at all, the entire digital rights ownership thing would be broken and 2 people on 2 different consoles could each play the same exact copy of a game for as long as they like just by not bothering to connect to the internet. Thinking about it a little more, you could have up to 10 or more people on 10 different consoles all playing the exact same copy of the same game, so long as all 10 people managed to authentic the game online within that 24 hour time period, and once they authenticated it, they simply stayed away from reconnecting to the internet. Without the 24 hour check, or some kind of check, the system can be abused pretty viciously.

Hopefully thier E3 conference will be better than the reveal.

that's a given because they are actually going to show games, but this event was their own and a chance to steal some of the spotlight from Sony, all they needed to do was not suck and they blew that spectacularly

Have you seen any of Microsoft's conferences over the last 3 years? I wouldn't say it's a given at all, I don't even know if they remember how to host a good one.

Do you have any other info on this besides it being on that map? Just curious.

The Osaka studio was hiring in the Japanese press a while back and are currently working on an as yet unnamed project (a few sites reporting this, such as gamekyo)
From what I've heard they are dedicated solely to Japanese content.

Obviously, as you can see by the map, they have set up quite a few studios. As per Harrison in a previous interview, they will be giving a more localized story in the run up to launch. Europe focus at Gamescon is a given, but I expect they'll be at TGS this year and we'll probably hear more about the Osaka studio then.

It's going to be Killer Instinct with Kinect controls. It will piss people off, but show off the accuracy of Kinect in a fighting game scenario. But really what's the point? It will be a Killer Instinct game in name only. The people that made the real games are gone now.

You another "insider" or what?

Nope, just another guy on a forum making an educated guess aka talking out my ass:)

Ah, ok. :)

This would make sense if equal amounts of people bought the 360 for games and entertainment. However the truth is the vast majority bought it for games. Therefore its more suitable if they focused on games a bit more unless they think they can broaden their audience with Xbone. Whether it does or does not is a vital question in the Xbone's success imo.

They already broadened their audience with the second half of the 360's life. If you look at the stats and the Kinect units sold, this is shown. They're now appealing to both audiences with one console, so I don't find it unreasonable that they're trying to satisfy both.

Don't worry! He said that to take away our "angst".

Naw.

As they decided to move Ryse away from Kinect only, Killer Instinct will never use Kinect only controls. That's just nonsense.

This is interesting, wonder if we'll see a new Phantom Dust or Lost Odyssey.

I have reason to believe, as I've said before, a new Lost Odyssey is coming. I don't know if Osaka studios will be behind it but I can tell you there is at least one large budget project underway and possibly a second.

I don't get it. $1 billion invested in games alone is unprecedented for Microsoft and isn't somehow negated by getting deals with the NFL.

Are the NFL one of those exclusives game dat Microsoft are investing 1 billion?

The NFL deal was TV. This $1 billion is into games and only games.

In case you missed it, there are 15 exclusive games coming to Xbox One in it's first year alone and they opened around 5 new studios from scratch.

Killer Instinct... okay.

Would prefer Conker or Perfect Dark.

Same, you never know, but right now it's more likely to be KI than anything else :\

I tought NFL deal was part of the 1 billion invest.. thanks for the correction.

But how many of those 15 will be Kinect casual games?

All of them.

And Kinect will be watching and recording every thing you do and send it to Microsoft.

And if you buy a used Kinect game, Microsoft will charge you $70 to "unlock" it.

And after 2 months, the online "cloud" server will shut down, and your game will become useless.
