SPRING BREAKERS (OT) Why Y'all Actin' 'Spicious?

This movie has some eye candy, but the style is garbage. It is a real chore to get through

I love when movie threads have like a 3 month disparity between theater release and when the movie leaks on the internet

Watched this last night, and I appreciated it less and less as it went on. I liked the visuals, and the existential tone of especially the first half, but the shift of focus didn't do it for me at all, and it didn't work as a satire or social commentary as far as I'm concerned. It's like saying the "black" robots in Transformers 2 are a comment on contemporary African-American culture.

Not as bad as Trash Humpers, but nowhere as good as it could have been.

Saw it last week and damn it was great, went way above my expectations.
Great looking, well written, cool characters and just plain fun.

Yes, and it's always incredibly obvious that everyone reporting in at the same time, always long after theatrical release and typically shortly before home release, is a dirty pirate. Like people aren't even subtle about it either.

I do enjoy the way about 100% of gaf condemns the shit out of piracy though, while these threads pop up like clockwork at leak time. It's great.

Got the ehm... review copies.

Movie is the citizen kane of road trip movies.

Great commentary on the hollow pursuits of modern life, wanting so many THINGS, treating youth like it'll last forever, etc.

Also, the usage of sound was really well done, using the gunshots and gun cocks at the right moments to juxtapose the eye candy.

Did not enjoy this movie at all. Obnoxious editing, Gucci Mane is a terrible actor, and honestly I could list off a bunch of other shit I didn't like but realized I'd be wasting even more time on this crap.

I'm a Harmony Korine fan and I feel like this is arguably his worst film. I did not expect to dislike it so much.

Would it absolutely kill Korine to have even a little bit of subtlety?

also even when its a rapper they find a way to give the role to a white guy. amazing, and yes I know he's based on that local Florida rapper

Saw this over the weekend. what a terrible terrible movie.

The ass n' titties and watching James Franco act a fool are the only things it had going for it.

Its pretty much a remake of this feature film:

Isn't his whiteness essential to the character, though? I agree with what you're getting at, however with Alien it seems like he's white not for the usual reasoning of that being considered "default" but because his race is (at least implicitly) an important part of the character.

How so? He exists as a dangerous element for the girls to express their deep desires (except for Selena who can't handle it) but I don't think that would change if he was black

e: If anything someone like Gucci would actually be threatening rather than Franco who is just ridiculous

Heh what people were saying about piracy really is true, and I also like that it seems those who tried to engage with the film in a smart at all (whether they liked it or not) saw it in theaters and those who are flooding in now just coincidentally all at the same time are also saying "hot girls bad movie". makes it very obvious that someone just hit download on a torrent because they saw selly in a bikini

But he's also supposed to express how weird the temporary spring break culture deal is so weird, and how its constancy in FLA is even weirder.
the girls and numerous spring breakers who just vacation there survive because their short term release is healthy. those who adopt the culture full-time, appropriate it even, become stuck. You could say Alien's permanent vacation is one where he's persistently appropriating gangster/rapper culture and not having to face the prejudice others in that lifestyle would have to face.

edit: I think the point is kind of that Alien isn't truly that threatening. It's a facade of a personality, when it comes down to it the girls are far more powerful than he is.

I knew exactly what to expect going in. I stand by my previous post. KIDS was way better.

wasn't an all-encompassing thing, I was already sure when posting that that there would be exceptions. but I'm betting I was right for a fair chunk of the posters pouring in

I really dont think so since the movie is about a spring break/vacation for the girls, but not for everyone else - Alien and Gucci and everyone else is shown to be living this life away from spring break (I think the only party scene is Alien at the concert), and also the lifestyle shown isnt what's associated with spring break (thats the party scenes in the first half of the movie) but rather a typical gangsta life. Them being jailed is what ends the typical spring break and starts this vacation

And if that's the point then he's ruining it by having this element be played by Franco which we do find goofy and non-threatening. If its meant to be a vacation into this life for the girls, it doesnt feel like it at all

Still waiting to see this. I have high hopes, but I'm going in kind of knowing what to expect.

This might be one of those movies we look back on in a few years and realize how ahead of its time it was.

You do realize it's officially out on itunes and probably other places to rent, right? Funnily enough it's even in the top 5 of itunes, so some people must be paying for it and it's a bit silly just to randomly accuse people.

Also for some reason the distributor of the movie didn't plan to show this in the cinemas here at all, was first after it was shown at a film festival with a big success (most sold tickets for the movie festival ever actually), that they decided to finally start showing it in 3 fucking cinemas in the whole country. So I'm sorry if I missed out on all the intellectual smart talk. I am not intellectual. I liked the tits though. tits are great.

I'd say Alien being at the concert does tie him into the spring break life, and I'd also say that lifestyle is associated with spring break. spring break shown in the film is adopting the drugged out, violent lifestyle for just a week. I do agree that when they're jailed is when the break ends and each character has to decide whether to dive into this lifestyle permanently or back out and return to monotonous, chaste college.

don't understand how Alien being wacky ruins any of that, I see it as essential.

you're right in that I shouldn't have brought up illegal stuff. I don't care where people got it. still think the level most people are engaging this on is laughable. I LOVE boobs too but I didn't find it too hard to try to be intellectual at the same time

All of their lifestyles are totally hollow and fake. Regardless if it's "Spring Break Forever" or "Thugg lyfe forever", they both end the same way when reality crashes down.

What a piece of shit. I attempted to get through this, and couldn't even finish (and I rarely turn off films in the middle). I got about a full hour in before turning it off in disgust. To say this is some deep social commentary is absurd. It's a glorified bout of hedonistic visuals and horrific editing. In addition, I didn't buy any of the performances, and the lingering bikini shots did little to assure me that this director has any real talent outside of shooting something akin to Baywatch.

Finally, and I say this not as a blazing feminist, this movie is downright awful in its portrayal of women outside of dumb, sex crazed, greedy sheep. The little bits thrown in about friendship do little to assuage my feeling that this movie is ultimately a T&A flick aimed at drooling men. It's honestly one of the most revolting films I've seen in quite some time, and I feel bad for all the actresses involved.

You seem to be ignoring the fact that all of the men are also dumb, sex crazed, greedy sheep.

Also, you probably should have finished the movie because you'd realize your interpretation was wrong by the end.

Spring Breakers might be the most explicitly feminist film of the year, maybe.
The film doesn't claim that only women are hedonistic...classical depictions have men hedonistic and women as purely rational, and in the majority of film (and art (and life)) when women indulge in more base desires, their consequences are FAR greater than that for men. Spring Breakers asserts not just that women can indulge, they are entitled to let loose and express their sexuality however they please. And they should be able to do that without feeling threatened, but frat bros fuck that up.
You also didn't get to (I'm assuming) the incredible power-reversal scene involving a gun and Alien's mouth.

LOL at the idea of this movie being anything other than MTV-grade gutter trash.

It's not art. There is no message. It's just an overindulgent glorification of the lifestyle contained within.

Dammit this movie makes me feel like Eastwood from Gran Torino.

damn you really missed the point of the movie.

*raises hand*

I also couldn't sit through the whole thing. I made it about 45 minutes in and just turned it off. I'll give it another try another night. I don't mind a slow build up in films, but I just was not interested here at all.
