I don't really trust downloading games from Nintendo digitally, but I think if there's any 3DS game you'd want to have always on your system, it's this one.

In the previous games they want to eat the turkey preparing the food. You literally have to hide their silverware so they wont.

I think there are other food items you can get too, I think I saw a hot dog in a screenshot. Pig neighbors will love that.

In City Folk, IIRC, there was an 8-slot palette for your "active" patterns, display space at the Able Sisters' you could swap patterns in and out of, and the Able Sisters' shop also had storage where you could swap patterns out to inactive space. This last bit was new and made it slightly better than Wild World, which just had the palette and display.
I'm hoping there are more than 8 active slots in New Leaf
(I'm also hoping I haven't gone completely senile with my explanation above)

What are the chances of my SD Card dying compared to an actual physical retail 3DS cart dying. I want to buy New Leaf on the eShop SO BAD, but now I'm paranoid about my SD Card corrupting and me not having a backup...
I want to have a bird neighbor or something and gift him thanksgiving Turkeys until his house is full of them. If they don't comply they get a squeaky hammer to the face.

72 designs can be saved at Able Sisters per player
8 designs on display at Able Sisters
1 design for the town flag
If you write over patterns, all uses of that patterns sans your flag will change to the new pattern.
So let's say you have a nice path way, but replace it with a pikachu pattern, your pathway will turn into Pikachu after Pikachu after Pikachu.
Villagers will also wear what's on display at the Able Sisters, so you might have people running around wearing "Brick road - Right Turn".

An answer's an answer.
I think it depends on the SD card, really. A quality SD card in good working order should easily last the years you can expect to be playing New Leaf (I've heard 100K write cycles tossed around, and that's before the card's own wear-leveling), and I believe it gets used more often for all the other 3DS things than New Leaf will ever ask of it.
That said, the chip in the retail card is definitely engineered specifically for New Leaf use. So there's that
I am gonna stick with download. I have faith in my SD card.
