Mattrick and Spencer Talk Games in OXM

I have been laughing at this image all day today.

And I really hope it's not Killer Instinct. I loved KI back in the days, and even KI64 but seriously the only good part about it these days is that gif.gif.

Why not Clayfighters reboot?

Why? There hasn't been a Killer Instinct release since 1996. Bloody Roar had iterations on the Gamecube, Xbox, and PS2.

I thought Bloody Roar was actually somewhat popular back in the Fighting Games Aplenty era.

It was as a 2nd tier fighter. What we really need is a new TOSHINDEN. Or even better Tobal. Fuck man, part 2 of that was incredible.

It was a big deal when it had an exclusive Gamecube version...but sales bombed on all versions IIRC.

Funny... I consider KI gold the worst iteration of KI

KI arcade / SNES >>>> KI2 Arcade >>>>> KI Gold

KI isn't a second tier fighter? These are Z tier fighters IMO. lol I know we have KI fans around here but gosh...

edit: Well I guess Z tier can be reserved for like PS All Stars or something. Or Way of the Warrior. Or Primal Rage! LOL

So yeah I can pretty much give a 90% guarantee that they are letting Rare make Killer Instinct, to help with winning over the hardcore crowd.

Is that shit even relevant these days? Fighters sell pretty badly right?

KI doesn't have the pull but if they want to try then so be it.

I'd rather RARE make another type of game.

Did KI have a hardcore following?

I remember playing it back in the day and it was fun and all.

I wasn't hardcore into fighters until VF

VF2 was in a greasy spoon down from my college, I skipped MANY classes back then

Another Bloody Roar? Lol, why?

I remember Tobal 2. I imported that game. It was great.

Not sure if I care about another KI, but at least MS has one more shot soon to try and appeal to me. I'd rather have another Perfect Dark game.

KI was on MK/SF2 level when it came out

It wasn't as polished, sure. But it was super popular and Nintendo completely mishandled everything.

KI2 wasn't as good as KI either IMO

Oh yeah Killer Instinct is a 2nd tier fighter too, long forgotten by all but the hardest of hardcore gamers that were old enough to actually play it. It really only got attention as a Nintendo game that skewed to an older demographic. Gameplay wasn't anything special to be honest imo. Tobal 2 is a classic game that was incredible. Gameplay was on another level and the level of characters in the game was insane as well.

Yeah, I'd gladly eat crow if it's Conker.

Instead of Killer App, it's going to be Killer Instinct. I'm keeping my expectations tempered with that.

Actually it COULD be Banjo

We know how the number is being made up. 15 exclusive titles, 8 of which are new IPs. They've also opened several new studios, as bolded above, which are working on localized content.

From what I've seen Microsoft are endeavoring to take a Nintendo stance, vis, shoring up their first party studios for a wide range of content to break reliance on third party exclusives.

You're insane if you think they're going to spend over 65 million per game on launch titles, many of which will be kinect casual games. They're probably saying 1 billion for the whole generation.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Studio formations don't happen overnight. AAA development is a long process that takes years and lots of money to establish, and even then it may not work.

Sony's big successes with studios like Sucker Punch also have their counter with studios like Zipper.

And with Microsoft only announcing Forza at their conference as a launch title, it tells me that the vast majority of this stuff won't be coming for a while and that Microsoft is going to let third parties do the heavy lifting at release.

:o I've never seen anyone put it on SF2's level in terms of quality or popularity. I think that's probably really overstating it. But I wonder if they will bring it back.

No, No, No. Rare should be focused on ONE thing right now.

If you followed the 4 new IPs thread, their studios have been working on games for a while. I won't comment on your reveal comment, because we both know it had to do with the entertainment aspect of the console.

To hell with you

KI was and still is awesome... I will defend KI to the death

Essentially its either KI, JFG or battle toads

I will say right out it won't be battle toads, jet force gemini was kinda niche and not exactly cherished

Killer instinct has a lot of appeal and right now fighting game genre is in better shape than platformers or beat em ups

Meh, KI was a week attempt at aping SF and MK, with crappy character designs( even by 90's standards) and "dial a combo gameplay". I'll admit it had a decent soundtrack though. If Rare is really bringing this one back it needs a massive overhaul if it's going up against the fighters of today. Starting with those awful character designs.

I don't know what they could be referring to other than Banjo-Kazooie or Killer Instinct. No other reasonably predicable old Rare franchises could be described as "historic" or "cherished"

As I said... I'll defend the game till I die :)

To hell with you! Fulgore is awesome! Even though I can't explain why a robot has a pony tail

Maybe it's just my region of the country, but when MK and SF2 were in arcades, me and my friends played them a lot, got the home versions... I didn't know Killer Instinct existed until there was rumors of Rare bringing it back. In my mind, it fits nicely in the rubbish bin of me too fighters that came out after the heavy hitters, whose names weren't worth remembering.

It will probably really be KI but there are other Rare IPs I would prefer ( conker, perfect dark, banjo.. heck I would even like a new Kameo more)

That's just it, was Killer Instinct ever cherished? It has a cult following sure and a GAF Defense Force (but what doesn't?) but cherished seems a bit of a stretch.

Certainly not as much as Banjo, Conker or even Perfect Dark.

I don't think KI is cherished, but I could easily see Microsoft thinking that it is. God knows they've proven time and time again in the recent past that they have lost touch with the core gamer.

Oh God, a new Conker game would be AMAZING, too. I spent countless hours on the N64 Multiplayer LOL. Nothing like killing Tediz.

Rare should just develop sequels to:

*Banjo - Microsofts platformer.
*Perfect Dark 2 - AAA FPS Shooter.
*Killer Instinct - Hardcore fighter to win hardcore crowd.

Next up Microsoft should develop/publish:
*New Fable
*New Crackdown
*Halo 5
*PGR5
*Shadow Complex 2
*Minecraft for XB1.

And then new IPs, and see how well they do in the first few years of XB1. If there quality games and sell well, Microsoft could have a next big thing on there hands.

Anyways, I'm excited for E3. It seems like were gonna see tons of big games.

Nintendo will bring out some system sellers for Wii U. Microsoft has 15 games lined up, with about 4-6 probably being Kinect Only titles. And Sony will surely bring the goods just like the past few years.

Maybe they could 'show' games instead of 'talk' games? It is a games console after all.

I remember once having a dream about a new Conker where you had different worlds parodying popular games. Things like Gears, Halo, Oblivion, Minecraft and whatnot. I never have game related dreams, which is odd.

Props to MS for trying Japan again. Doubt its going to have any meaningful impact though. If they are dedicated to Japan they need to do two things:
-remove used game policy
-get Japanese third parties on board.

Like in the West for them to stand a chance they at least need make sure they have 90% of the third party games PS gets. Exclusives would also help obviously.
