So, what happened today about the FGC and people trying to make a living out of it? Seeing a lot of posts on twitter about it.

ChrisG doesn't want to go to evo because he doesn't see the point of winning it; Triforce latches on because it somehow validates what he's doing. Plus Marn talks about how awesome it is when a developer has a playerbase of 13 million and decides to pay for a competitive circuit, and it's relevant to fighting games somehow.

X-Factor could very well be split into multiple forms (which could perhaps be overall weaker) which players can choose. Then can really get creative (e.g. this one is best for anchors, only this one gives you speed, this one gives a universal airdash, this one cancels out X-factor, etc).

EDIT: VF has one "special" bar in the form of Shun Di's drinks. They are even consistent over rounds.

Welp. EVO is going to be another FGTV potsplit then?

I would pay DLC money for a tridashing Haggar.

I don't know if it's related to this, but FChamp posted this in the Twitch chat earlier today (I forgot to post it here since I had it sitting in Notepad):

Fgtvlive: i dont think anyone but justin makes more than me or same
Fgtvlive: rogs contract should be better next year since this is his first year

I'm back :D

Got to meet DacidBro and talk to him for a bit, missed a chance to play him in P4A though.
And win :P

Played in a small injustice tournament and got second though so that was fun.

Was hoping Max was going to be there but I guess he had other stuff he was tending to at the time.

VXG EMP Chris G.

That awkward moment when you realise you are wasting your life.
Damn this was cold. What if we go eSports again tomorrow, huh?

Where did you go? Glad you had fun though!

Of course he's going to EVO. He's just a melodramatic bitch.

"Well, I'm probably going to win this $10K+... what's the point?" - no man ever.

I was at an anime convention in San Jose. I've been going for the last 6 years, I missed last year though because my back started to get really bad around that time, I actually had a wheel chair this year so I went again.

Funniest momment was
"What are you cosplaying?"
"Oh I'm cosplaying a cripple, I do it everyday, it's fun"

Guy when from :D to D: in half a second.

Read my post!:

Here's another idea, too:
When each character is the last one remaining, he/she can still use assist buttons to create screen effects that are assist-like. This retains the power of assists without the threat of anything becoming too crazy. Examples:

Viewtiful Joe:
Sylvia appears on the screen and fires her gun.

Dormammu:
A tracking Purification pillar appears (so you can call the tracking Purification pillar assist and charge a Dark Spell, covering yourself).

Amaterasu:
Issun drops from the sky and performs a slashing attack.

Storm:
Lightning strikes the ground, inverse-Purification style.

Shuma-Gorath:
A tentacle appears from behind the opponent through a warp portal and tries to grab him/her.

Haggar:
An oil drum rolls across the screen.

This shit is so easy, Capcom! I just one-upped your game design for a comeback factor with two different ideas in the last 20 minutes.

I like this idea a lot.

I would pay DLC money for a tridashing Haggar.

Heroes and heralds box dash H she-hulk is some of the most fun I have ever had.

Is the payout for EVO 10k? I seem to recall stories about players who won EVO saying that the payout isn't as high as people think it is.

Fanime? Glad you had fun. A couple of friends went and they got props for being cardboard Blitzcranks.

ChrisG can't see past the end of his nose. If he gets his first Evo title he has a decent shot at getting a sponsor better than garbage AGE.

But, as a serious question, what is a decent sponsor?

Of course he's going to EVO. He's just a melodramatic bitch.

"Well, I'm probably going to win this $10K+... what's the point?" - no man ever.

All the time and work needed to get yourself into a position to "probably" win 10K would be my issue. Even with Champ dedicating a month to winning Marvel or whatever he is doing, the amount of things he could be doing with that time is huge.
Which is all well and good if people love the games and want to keep playing them, but that is why the real life monster will always win in the end. Incidentally it is also why the whole "cleaning up streams and making concessions to tournament formats" thing is important...but I digress...

He doesn't really, though. There's no sponsor in the FGC that would pay him an amount proportional to how much he dominates the game.

Getting a 9 to 5 pays more than any sponsor would pay you, that's the truth of it with or without esports, unless you're one of maybe a dozen people in a game played by 10s of millions.

It seems a lot of players share the same sentiments as Chris G and I suppose its understandable. He's the best at what he does but compared to other competitive gamers in different genres, he's only making a fraction of what they are.

It really is a shame that IGN sold IPL as it could have been really big for the FGC (or Capcom players). A lot of resources went into that deal that went to waste and at the moment, there's really no clear alternative. As it stands right now, there doesn't seem to be a lot of growth either. I don't have any numbers but I can't imagine tournaments having a lot of growth. Maybe someone could provide entry numbers for majors the past 3 or 4 years? I'm thinking it has a very linear growth. In regards to stream viewership, it seems rather stagnant as well. EVO 2011 topped at around 80k views iirc and EVO 2012 got around 95k? I'm really curious as to how many viewers EVO will get this year. I'm thinking it'll reach around 100k. Something big needs to happen in order for the FGC to really prosper.

EG seems to be the only sponsor out there that pays well. Justin gets a regular salary from them, and I think Floe does too.

It seems to be pretty static though. Unless I'm missing somebody it is still just the four of them in that pretty close group?

It doesn't exactly scream big money or investment to me.

EG or Complexity.

Do we have any idea/ballpark to what a player sponsored by them would earn?

Chris G's got such a shit personality.
No really.

This scumbag was everyone's favorite babyface, but when the spotlight was on him I realized what a whiny, emo bitch he really is. Dude's the best Marvel player (and possibly the best gamer in US FGC) and when he's got a golden opportunity to create content, grow the scene and get more fans (like F. Champ), he's squandering it off on twitter fights and diva tactics. Once I thought that was Fanatiq's influence but I know better now.

Yup that's the one :P

Freaking line for badges was 7 hours long...
and about 2 minutes for me. One perk to being in a wheelchair I guess lol

I was freaking depressed when I couldn't go last year. My friends had a room and I had the tickets and everything I just didn't have the physical strength for it at that point. It's literally nonstop walking and standing.

FChamp has said 70k. That's after he got a raise for winning Evo and includes tournament winnings.
Damn, I didn't know we had a number for his salary.

That's pretty damn good IMO. He does his sponsors very well too.

Are all of the FGTV sponsors through Complexity too? Newegg and Console Combat are pretty new ones, and I don't think they're like Sound Blaster is for Complexity as a team sponsor.

where the fuck is chris g gonna make 15k in a weekend? evo doesn't pay enough so he'll just skip it? that makes sense.

EG also has Star Craft people.

EG has a bunch of players, and it's not all fighting games.

Of course, well aware of that as you see the teams heavily promoted. But only that small group in the FGC? I don't see them actively signing players and making a big show of it. They seem to have wrapped up Justin and perhaps thrown some bones to his mates.

Interesting. Kind of makes me wonder why Mike Ross wouldn't have continued on? I got the impression he largely stopped playing.

Now that you mention it, maybe Chris G is considering becoming a full time stripper or escort? I mean that way he doesn't even have to pot split, unless he starts feeling bad for his customers.

What prompted this?

I'm at least somewhat sympathetic to any top player for whom their daily grind sometimes feels like more of an actual job than a hobby once you take it to that level. It has to cross all of their minds at some point.

A part of me does want to see esports take over like all these players are advocating, so they can be thoroughly dominated by Koreans who train 18 hours a day. Then they can brag about how they're the highest-placing American at the tournament (tied for 16th), and complain when the commentators get paid more than the tournament winner.

If you want that esports money you'll still need to play for it, and there are bigger pot monsters out there than the small fish we got in the FGC.
