What prompted this?

I'm at least somewhat sympathetic to any top player for whom their daily grind sometimes feels like more of an actual job than a hobby once you take it to that level. It has to cross all of their minds at some point.
they can always get a job.

That only makes you run at normal speed.

But that makes you relatively faster than your enemies, sort of how movies simulate super speed fights in slow motion while moving at normals speed. Plus slowdown is for the attack buff when you combine with zoom anyways, too bad that effect didn't carry over in Marvel. Having slow enhanced bombs and voomerangs would have been really interesting.

Who the hell boycotted NCR because of 2/3? I don't know, but I guess I'll take Tekken expert Lazy vs Crazy's word for it.

KOR is the guy who was trying to get 3/5 for Tag 2 be tournament standard.

People were giving NCR shit about Tekken for really stupid reasons but I don't recall 2/3 being one of them.

So... am I the only person who doesn't really give a shit whether Chris goes to EVO or not? There are so many other players there that one player is doesn't really matter.

Yeah I think the big drama was it being three days with Tekken being treated as a "side tournament" because of being on Friday. The 3/5 thing probably just got dragged into it as a salty sideshow.

I don't care about watching Capcom at all... but I think it would be a huge shame if he isn't there. Pretty much the only interest for me in the game at the moment is if and when somebody will take his team down.
But for that to happen, he has to be there and also in the right frame of mind. Even if he does go, you have to be concerned that he already has enough excuse built up after all the drama to not do his best.

It would be amazing if this happened at EVO.

I think it will. I wouldn't be shocked if Skullgirls outdid Tekken. At this stage in the lifecycle- MK and Tekken are below Persona in the pecking order most places. (that's adjusted by location- FR Tekken is much more important than most other places)

I will be surprised if it outdoes KOF, but I think it will be closer than people think.

Is any of the skullgirls stuff due out before EVO?

The PC version and Squiggly beta, though I am unsure if Evo will allow that.

That said, SG being on PC and stll having work done on it puts it in a good position to survive this gen, though it will end up being run on PCs like how Melty is.

I think in 2-3 years majors will need some laptops to run a few games.

I bet Chris g is just afraid of this pressure. Everything building to this and it could all fall apart in two sets. The money is his justification.

There are people who wish they could even come close to making top 16 or top 8 at EVO yet alone win it all. Chris G shouldn't let a chance of a lifetime pass him by. He has proven himself in almost every imaginable way with the game except for winning at EVO. Get that monkey off your back and then take a much needed vacation at VXG. Nothing is worse than coming so far in something only to give up near the end. Besides, he must get that trophy for the East Coast. :)

I bet it's that and it's just asking for attention (like when he wins a match and it seems like he's about to die), winning EVO is not like winning your regional tournament, the pressure is on a whole other level. The money is a petty excuse, especially when he said money is not important, winning EVO is the biggest prize you can get as a FG player. This is why people come from all over the world to compete in the tournament, despite having few chances to win it. If you care about competition why would you skip the most important tournament?

Would be nice if steam linux kicks along and in 3 years you can just buy half a dozen usb stick PCs and have just about every fighting game ready to go.

You don't need linux for that. Nearly every PS3/360 stick (and all but first-gen mad catz sticks) run just fine on Windows now, and SF4/MK9/Skullgirls/Melty are on PC or soon will be, plus emulation.

2d is not hard to run on PC at all.

Just got my account activated, I'm happy to be on neogaf.

I think that Chris G is a great player overall and it's unfortunate he's having these thoughts. It seems to me that he does not place much intrinsic value on his wins. Without a matching extrinsic motivation ($$) he might be questioning why he does what he does and it's safe to say that every top player goes through this at some point.

Anyway, I'm here mostly to plug KOF XIII and my stream so I'll be in that thread. Also learning Guilty Gear and Skullgirls.

Welcome to GAF!

It seems a lot of players share the same sentiments as Chris G and I suppose its understandable. He's the best at what he does but compared to other competitive gamers in different genres, he's only making a fraction of what they are.

It really is a shame that IGN sold IPL as it could have been really big for the FGC (or Capcom players). A lot of resources went into that deal that went to waste and at the moment, there's really no clear alternative. As it stands right now, there doesn't seem to be a lot of growth either. I don't have any numbers but I can't imagine tournaments having a lot of growth. Maybe someone could provide entry numbers for majors the past 3 or 4 years? I'm thinking it has a very linear growth. In regards to stream viewership, it seems rather stagnant as well. EVO 2011 topped at around 80k views iirc and EVO 2012 got around 95k? I'm really curious as to how many viewers EVO will get this year. I'm thinking it'll reach around 100k. Something big needs to happen in order for the FGC to really prosper.

How big? The only way I see Capcom or WB putting up a pot bonus worthy of attention outside the FGC is if they include it in their marketing budget, in which case they'll spend it on something else. I would love to see a Cross Assault 2: It'll be better this time, but Capcom probably wont try that again.

And welcome Juicebox.

Evo 2011 had over 100k viewers

The FGC is just run on a different model than e-sports. I've always said FGC is closer to WSOP than any "e-sports".

One idea: 12 tournies (majors) do this.
(My suggestion: Evo, FR, UFGT, NEC, NCR, SCR, TFC, Devastation, a Texas tourney, CEO, Canada Cup, NWM)- go for a good geographical mix.

1st place goes down to 30% from 70%. They put 40% of their entry fee money aside for the grand tourney.

At the end of the year- the 12 winners (if someone has already won and wins again, the highest eligible finisher makes it)- play round-robin somewhere for all that money. pot bonus includes free trip to grand tourney. YOu wouldn't need a big place, it's invitational- at most 75-100 folks would need to be there (players, staff, commentators)

You'd probably have a pot of around 100k for this grand finals tournament, held new year's weekend.

Well the problem is that the FGC doesn't have mass appeal yet. Street Fighter, Tekken, and Marvel are button mashers while Call of Duty takes some massive amount of skill apparently

Honestly, and the FGC won't like this, but some big name needs to make the Call of Duty of fighting games. Make it have a very low barrier to entry, with constant achievements, and very good social networking capabilities. Team based would be nice as well so you can play with your friends. It'd sell gang-busters (most likely) and even better, it'd put the spotlight on fighting games. THAT'S what the genre needs. Yeah, say what you want about Call of Duty, but that franchise makes a TON of money. It was a big deal when Capcom gave away $25k at the 25th Anniversary tournament. Now imagine if they gave away $250k.

It's better for the genre anyway. Games that are too hard don't get played. Not saying to make everything like brawl. You can have low barrier to entry and still have depth.

If he's still on top around Evo time and he doesn't go, that'll undermine Evo UMVC3. If he's not there, whoever gets 1st place will have an asterisk next to their name imo

It'll still be a great tournament, almost a "what if ChrisG didn't exist?" situation and that might make top 8 even more hype. But #1 won't truly be number 1 at UMVC3, obviously.

Of course, this could all just be a sick metagame-- trick everyone into not practicing with him in mind, then announce a week before that he'll be there. lol

I was talking about a usb stick computer. Plug into a TV, attach a USB hub and should be set for fighting games. Given the low cost of them, if you can find a model that runs the games well enough, you should be able to standardise pretty easily.

The catch is a lot of them run linux/android...which is good for keeping costs down, but doesn't help you run SF4.

One day (hence the couple of years thing).

There are people who wish they could even come close to making top 16 or top 8 at EVO yet alone win it all. Chris G shouldn't let a chance of a lifetime pass him by. At the end of the day he has come this far, might as well fire up and win EVO too. Even if he gives fighting games away after and gets a real job or joins the army or whatever, at least he'll always have that.

The first thing you have to do to win is to actually play.

If he doesn't go, there's no ifs or buts to it. I don't see what the issue is.

Kinda want to go to Michigan Masters this weekend but I don't even know what I'd do since I'm terrible at fightgames and I only have PS3 (I think the entirety of it is being run on 360).
I'm going for Marvel, and probably some misc casuals throughout the day. I'm in a similar predicament as you too. I normally play on PS3, but everything's going to be on 360. I bought a wired 360 pad to use, but I won't have a chance to get used to it before I go. (I don't have a 360)

Fighting GAF, I'm in the market for a PS2 to 360 controller converter. From what I've looked at, the xTokki converter seems to be the best and is supposedly lagless. Are there any other converters worth considering?

Get the Xtokki. It's the best. It's lagless. It's highly recommended by SRK. Also, it doesn't require a wired 360 controller like all of the other converters. That last point is a pretty big deal.

I guess you're saying if he doesn't go to Evo then he doesn't get to call himself the best? There's something to that and it certainly takes away from all he's accomplished. But still, if he wins everything leading up to it and doesn't go, it'll undermine the tournament too because he is the guy to beat.

Don't get me wrong though. This little ploy coupled with all the other poor sport crap he's been pulling and the fact that he doesn't seem very involved in the community outside of showing up to tournaments kinda makes me wish he'd go away. Also, it's conspicuous that as soon as he starts losing a little bit (ECT and NLBC right after), he's suddenly talking about not going to Evo.

Kadey, whatever you do, just please don't say that he'll win Evo, that's all I ask.

Considering a big part of Evo is international competition, there have been a bunch of Evos where the "best" haven't been there. Think of all the Japanese talent that stays at home for every Street Fighter event. The only difference is that you know who ChrisG is because of the weekly team spooky streams. You don't know who MadKOF or Fuudo is until the tournament happens.
