Sonic Lost Worlds Debut Trailer [Up: Wii U + 3DS screenshots]

I guess I'm one of the few who doesn't think the game looks like SMG. Aside from the rounded states. Hell, there were people saying Colors was like Galaxy because it took place in space and had power ups.

Anyway, day fucking one, looks fun as hell.

You are not alone xP

Wow, the 3DS version looks nice.

I don't agree that the Wii U version looks bad just because of the art style, it's a noticeable step down from what was done on the 360/PS3. It's weird that the 3DS version looks like it got a lot more effort in pushing what they could do with the hardware.

It's not explained in detail, this is the quote from the producer:

"In previous 3D Sonic games, even if you're running through a level at top speed, if you hit an obstacle you stop instantly. To avoid this, we added a new action to keep Sonic running, even when you hit an obstacle. To make sure it only happens when you want it to, it's triggered by the player holding the run button.”

Right. The issue I take with that is this by having Sonic automatically avoid every obstacle that slows him down, they are taking the gameplay further from its platform roots. Contrary to popular opinion, Sonic 1, 2 and 3 weren't about constant speed. The games were fast, but only the most skilled players can play through a stage without stopping. Here, the challenge to maintain speed seems to have been removed. If I let go of B I'll slow down, so is there a point? Going fast, fast, fast all the time, with very little resistance to your speed is boring and was one of people's biggest complains about Sonic Advance 2 and 3.

Third pic definitely is sexy, like a Green Hills Twilight Zone. lol
Actually, all pics are polished and clean, wow!
This has been in development for some time.
I'm pumped SEGATA, PUMPEED.

I've never been interestedin a sonic game in my life, but this looks pretty cool. Not sure why some are trying to make graphical comparisons to previous sonic games though, it looks freaking gorgeous which should be all that matters.

Producer is Takashi Iizuka
"some stages focusing on slower speeds with more platforming, and others pushing players to run as fast as possible"
Tiered structure to movement speed, depending on if you are holding down neither, one of, or both the triggers.
Parkour system where Sonic can opt to keep running even if he hit's an obstacle.
"GamePad is specifically used to activate various Whisp-based “Color Powers,” which feature touch-based controls and are mostly used to gain access to side paths and areas."
"The GamePad will also play a role in ‘Support Mode,’ which allows one player to use Wii U’s tablet to assist a second player who is controlling Sonic with a Wii remote and Nunchuck."
Tails, Knuckles and Amy will make non-playable appearances. Eggman is back as well
Rescuing Flickies and gathering Red Star rings will unlock content, or open up gold cannons which open up new paths
Sounds good so far.

To be fair, it is VERY jarring to instantly stop when you hit a wall. It always takes me out of the experience, even in Generations. I'm sure the levels will be designed so that you can't just go fast all the time. They mentioned several teirs of speed being used in this game play, so there is probably going to be a lot of platforming sequences that require a large amount of precision.

I can live with that.

Same.

The nice thing about this is you can choose to slow down by letting go of triggers instead of doing a weird jump to get rid of momentum. Doesn't mean you'll be running at max, but more like controlling the limits of how fast you go. I do understand the worry about being able to go really fast too easily by just holding down both triggers though.

They mentioned that there will be some levels that focus on slower paced gameplay as well as fast.

Also I'm not sure it will make Sonic avoid obstacles completely - it would make more sense that some would just slow him down more as opposed to stopping completely right?

They're not even trying to disguise their influences with that thing.

As for Sonic ripping off Mario: that's old news, since Sonic 1's a more horizontal, pinball-based version of Mario anyway.

lol

Well, there's no way to deny that the backgrounds aren't anywhere as beautiful as Generations'.

While I agree from a graphics/GPU power view, I disagree from an aesthetic and art viewpoint. I prefer the look of this game over Generations, which I found too busy and harsh on the eyes. This new game is clean, inoffensive, and very, very easy to see where you can go and where you're going.

I mean:

that shows more graphics power and muscle, but it's way too busy IMO.

Impressed with the gameplay, but not expecting any memorable boss battles.

That's one thing, recent Sonic games have had trouble with boss battles. I don't want them to get rid of them, but I am hoping they somehow find a way to make interesting boss battles. Its such a weird thing since Sonic Team used to be really good with boss battles.

Looks promising, to be certain. The parkour and tiered speed systems will definitely brighten up the gameplay. Wall-running seem promising as well, but I can't help but think that it may get a little gimmicky and unreliable. I'm sort of disappointed that we can't play as either Tails or Knuckles, but seeing as how cutting out all friends will make for a more focused platformer (hopefully meaning massively improved level design), I'm okay with it.

What I'm not okay with is the Deadly Six, who look like rehashed versions of the Sapce Jam aliens. Honestly, they look terrible. I hope to God that Eggman steps in at some point to steal the show--cause they don't seem menacing in the slightest, and that attributes a great deal to the amount of satisfaction we get in overthrowing them.

"Only one can stop them..."
[Sonic appears, face to face with the villains]
[He immediately runs away]

Wut

I'd imagine that, in the case of spinning at max straight into wall, the developers would intend for you to wall-run at that point in the level or something similar. We don't know enough about the system yet to know if this will work, though.

I glad people are considering buying a Wii U now. I expect a lot of stuff like this coming from Nintendo and 3rd parties. I doubt the system is going to be flooded with titles but like the Wii the stuff that does come will be euphoric and the Wii U will be great and maybe even utopian. I'm really drooling at the thought of the next Mario Game.

This was the biggest problem with Unleashed honestly, it turned quite a bit of the stages into exercises in memorization and essentially "quick time events"

I'll be honest, most of the boss battles in the classic games were kinda lame, too. There are exceptions, though(last three bosses in S3&K for instance).

The level of depth that these level designs sound like they're going to have sounds incredible. I am very excited to see how this plays, hopefully at E3.

I'm not kidding

When I saw the trailer, I immediately thought about the controls and how it would be much better to let Sonic walk with the stick and add velocity when holding down a button/trigger

And now that idea seems to be true - I feel good about myself and good about this Sonic guy

Which Sonic team? There's been many since the Genesis days.

Maybe they should go back to Eggman in his Eggmobile instead of gigantic robots and monsters.

I sort of agree. Colours failed abysmally at boss fights, with the exception of the final boss. Generations had pretty good boss fights with the exception of the final boss. I enjoyed Perfect Chaos in particular. VS shadow, Silver, metal sonic and the other bosses were still alright though.

What did you think was wrong with them?

One thing I really hope (and looks like) this game will take from Galaxy is a gameplay first approach. Lets throw out all the nonsense stories that no one cares about and just get back to great platforming.

There have been, but I mean the motif of Sonic Team. I actually liked the boss battles in Sonic 3 & Knuckles quite a bit, or even Sonic Adventure back in the day (with a few exclusions). But the last Sonic Team game I recall enjoying the boss battles in was Billy Hatcher.

I will argue that Sonic has been on a rise of overall quality, but the boss battles have still stayed at best unmemorable, at worst dull, repetitive, or even confusing, with the final boss of Generations probably being the worst of the worst.

Guess we'll see how they handle this. Actually, I might have enjoyed some of the boss battles in Rush and Rush Adventure.

A good question, and one I would have to think on. I liked Perfect Chaos in Generations though, and I did like Colors final boss. But the rest of them were unremarkable.

I guess what they done greatly is not trying to make Sonic be "way cool" but actually trying to create a imaginative, and gameplay centric world. At least that is what grab my attention so far.
