Done with Anime?

The only animes i watch these days are some Gundam Series, because I'm a sucker for Gundam. But besides the occasional Gundam Series most animes don't interest me anymore, because if they are really good they're adapted from a manga most of the time. And i've never heard of a series where the manga is worse than the anime. Also there's a lot more interesting new mangas these days than anime and you can consume them way faster, which is kinda nice when you don't want to spend heaps of time with the stories to enjoy them.

Just off the top of my head: Akira, Ghost in the Shell, K-On!, Bunny Drop, FMA.

I think the first anime I ever watched were Akira, Ninja Scroll, and Ghost in the Shell on VHS. I think I did very well growing up. Then it was strange. I got into DBZ, Gundam, Cowboy Beebop. Everything Toonami really aired I watched.

But to be honest I never liked Naruto or Bleach. I didn't see why it was considered good at all.

But I'll watch a few here and there. Movies, Attack on Titan has been allright. But I don't think I'll ever be as big as a fan like I am with the older Anime. The older stuff IMO is much much better.

Plus its one of those hobbies (for me anyway) where I'll watch it when its available. I wont go online just to watch it. And I own the box sets of the series I like.

The last few years "everything was Moe" I still enjoy a few shows but nothing like back in the day.

I miss this style so much

God that animation was amazing but the story was soooo shitty.

anime is like books for me--I used to really like reading books, but then one day I read a bad book and realized there's so many bad books coming out that there was no point in dredging through all the trash to get to the very few good ones. Things of childhood must be set aside; now I just play videogames and collect stamps.
So many bad movies and series too. As everywhere else you just have filter out the most recommended and critically acclaimed ones. Or just watch a funny dumb series, no matter what, because those are enjoyable too.

Those high quality cel anime had something to them, but digital ones can look great too with a nice budged, perspective amd team.

I usually watch a couple shows each season, but I just looked at the summer chart and well...

Maybe it'll be good for me to skip a season.

(looks like that's what Studio BONES is doing as well, lol)

Wow, 15 seasons an a lot of movies too. Any recommendation for one or the other, or any good film that can be watched as Conan noob?

I agree with the earlier recommendation to start at the beginning of the series. But use this to skip the anime original episodes:

http://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wiki/Anime

Using that, 33 of the first 82 episodes can be skipped. Makes it much easier to watch.

Don't do it bro. There's too many episodes. Don't put yourself through that torture.

It's worth it though! And it's actually not hard to watch, just skip the anime original episodes.

It was worth it, but when I got to episode 80 something and saw how many episodes there were left I gave up. No way am I going to watch that many episodes. I felt like I wasted my time.

Are you watching Valvrave? It's essentially a Gundam series with a different name.

Thanks for the tip, I'll take a look at it when the season is over.

I can definitely say that i prefer the Akira manga to the anime. While the movie is really superbly animated, it feels too much like a compilation movie with things left out. That' just my impression from back then though, haven't read or watched them both in maybe 10 years. I can't comment on any of the others mentioned by you or the poster above, since i haven't seen those series at all or just watched the anime.

Yeah, i'm done with anime and have been for 5 years.

I just read some mangas. I wonder what happened to wolf guy though, I really liked it but I haven't seen it in a while.

If another Hajime No Ippo anime did come out I would watch it though, but that's the exception I think.

Wolf Guy ended and is fully translated.

anime will never be over for me.

Series like madoka and higurashi are exquisite and I believe there will continue to be similar masterpieces in the future.

I'm burnt out. The only things that I'm interested in right now are Gargantia, stuff like Gintama/Arakawa Under the Bridge/Cromartie, and maybe Maou. And that backlog of old school mecha stuff like Fang of the Sun Dougram and Turn A and MSV Gundam.

Can you name 5-10 good animes that exceed 50 episodes? There really isn't that many
Fist of the North Star, Slam Dunk, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Lupin the 3rd, Galaxy Express 999, Oishinbo, Gegege no Kitaro, Kiteretsu Daihyakka, etc. and I could go on.

I don't know if you could even call yourself a fan of old school anime if you couldn't name at least a handful of good long-running series.

I tend to not like old school anime. For instance, on that list I know I didn't like Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and Lupin (sans the miyazaki movie, which was good). I really don't know how someone could have the time to watch through that kind of stuff unless you're watching it while it's airing.

I actually find it easier to watch them when they've stopped airing since you can skip through OPs, recaps, EDs, and previews. Of course, you don't have to go at the snail's pace of one episode a week to catch up either. There are also quite a number of purely-episodic shows which require no knowledge of the background plot, so you can pick them up and drop them at any time.

Samurai Champloo ruined anime for me. It was perfect.
Too perfect.
Spent three years after that trying to watch stuff, nothing was good.
Then, I just stopped watching.
I get my fill of 'anime' through gaming as it is, so I've had no desire to go back.

Link to whatever this is.

The name is right there in the image xD But here you go:

Michiko to Hatchin

I'll let you figure out how to get hold of it yourself. I'm not sure if there is an English release yet but anyway:

If you like Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo, basically there is a very high chance you'll enjoy this show. It has the same atmosphere. There's a sense of adventure and you get those same little self-contained stories in an episode that still develop the characters and move the story forward. It's great. It's one of those rare anime that is great. You'll care about the characters, what happens to them. The dynamic between the two main characters is very carefully put together. It is a little slower paced that Bebop or Champloo, less action, but the action is very good as far as I can recall. The art is beautiful, the score has some nice Brazilian-type stuff going on. It's an anime that non-anime people will probably dig. My parents liked it. Parents. haha watch it! The director of this show actually directed a couple episodes of Champloo if I've got my facts straight. And the acting is actually believable! So many anime have such terrible voice-actors, even in the Japanese version you can tell they're doing the hokey equivalent of "ughuh!!! Goku - uhhuh how c-can his p-power level be so high? Uhh-ughu!??" But here there is some genuine talent.

tl;dr: Watch it. It will restore the faith. And then break your heart when you realise once again anime is still mostly shit.

Just watched the first episode of Attack on Titan. Anyone who has gotten tired of anime for whatever reason needs to see this. It's incredible!

The biggest drawback to me with Kyojin is it's generic character design, it seems all faces are quite similar, just compare that to any character from say, Bebop where each one of the casts' character already comes through when looking at them. Or just look at the stills of Michiko to Hatchin as posted by ugly which look amazing and compare these with Kyojin's cast of characters. It seems way more thought has been put into the former.

They look distinctively different, it's just the uniform that makes them all look similar. Not every group can wear all colors of the rainbow to make them instantly recognizable from half a mile away.

I JUST SAW THE END OF CODE GEASS R2.

WHY.
Eh, because plan accomplished?

Times have changed, shows these days that go on for 50+ episodes are definitely not worth it.

There's more stuff than Shounen out there. You could always watch some of the Noitamina block stuff like Kids on the Slope (from the Cowboy Bebop guy).

If you're willing to look past anime having to have fights and explosions there's loads of good stuff. Honey and Clover, Princess Jellyfish are both great.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Urusai Yatsura
Cardcaptor Sakura
FMA: Brotherhood

Space Brothers is on its 60th episode currently, and it is absolutely worth watching.

Raildex has not gone stale either.

Haven't watched either one of those to be honest. I was thinking of the shounen shows with years of filler that go on for way too long mostly.

Although my new least favorite thing in anime is shows that end early but never caught up to the manga so they literally do not have an ending. It just stops.

WHY.

Ahh the last show i watched during my active anime years. And even then, i wasnt watching as much as AnimeGaf.

It's fascinating imagining the story writers sitting in the room and asking each other "Ok what crazy plot twist we gotta put at the end of the episode this time?"

I always like when these anime thread pop up on OT. Gets me a list of anime to go try out. Now if only I actually go start watching lol...

This thread makes me realise that there's a lot of anime fans that just don't bother with the seasonal anime threads at all. :/

Detective Conan is by far and away my favorite show ever, and I'm probably never gonna be caught up :lol

But that doesn't really matter I suppose. Still love it. Maybe one day I'll marathon it. Regardless, I have watched the first few episodes countless times, specifically that arc where Mouri goes to the hotspring reunion just because I got those DVDs as a kid. I can rewatch this show forever.

That went out the window years ago when the Lucky Stars of the world took over. Funny anime but not my cup of tea really. It would have to depend.
I wonder how many bothered to watch Lucky☆Star beyond the first episode.

Also I really didn't need to see that gif by HEALTH_DISCO while eating my lunch.
