Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

i like how you can recruit so many characters in chrono cross. it would have been even better if each character had a little more depth, but i'm still glad they were there.

in dragon age 1, i liked the
the fade.
i know many people hate it, but i enjoyed it.

i like the blue shell in mario kart. i'm not a good player, but there are many times when i can stay in 1st place and hold on to it for so long that it gets a little boring. plus it gives hope to the other people playing with me.

i like perma death in fire emblem. BUT i also like the option for non perma death. at least more people can try the game. but i think nintendo should just give them the ok or bad ending if this option is on.

i like quick time events. there i said it. i can understand the hate it gets when your partner doesn't press the buttons right away. but i had a lot of fun blaming my teammate whenever we see teh game over screen.

i hate a lot of jrpgs just by looking at it. but i have a desire to play a jrpg. so now i have a problem because i refuse to play any jrpg if the characters i control look bad. the last jrpg i played was the last remnant and that was a great game.

i like the last remnant. clearly many people don't since squaresoft won't make another.

i am tired of playing as a bald space marine. but i was pissed when jim raynor grew his hair back (i know why he did it, but still).

Very true; Western tropes are just more... you know... Western... so we (for some definition of "we") like them instead of subconsciously (?) viewing them as odd and thus dumb.

I'm from the west and I don't like those tropes very much (orcs, elves, dwarves) :P

Games that graphically "push the limits of the system" look worse than games that work within the system's designed boundaries. Compare Pitfall! to Pac-Man on the Atari 2600, Super Mario Bros. to Castlevania III on the NES, Wipeout to Gran Turismo 2 on PS1.
wut
One of these is, aesthetically, a hot mess.

And a bonus controversial opinion, people who post screenshots/cover art of works without labeling them are trying to tell you that their opinions are worthless. I would support it becoming a bannable offense.

The term "NES hard" is ridiculous. Older games weren't necessarily harder, they were often just broken and a throw back to the arcade mentality of sucking money.

I think the Halo games are mediocre. I think the lore is fantastic and think Halo Legends was awesome and I think the Halo TV show would be something I could get into (unless it's an XBone exlusive thing).

My least favourite game this gen was RAGE. I played 10 minutes and could not go on any further. I would also point out that I have played Terminator Salvation and it's worse than that.

The gameplay in BioShock was awful. I had to play Dishonoured in 30 minute to 1 hour play sessions to stop myself becoming bored of it. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, for what it was, is actually a pretty fun game.

Mario doesn't work in 3D and never has. Ocarina of Time and Major's Mask are nowhere near as good as Link to the Past. Metroid has never been remotely interesting to me. Smash Bros gets too much praise. Starwing/Starfox is better than LylatWars/StarFox 64 and I would pay good money to Nintendo for a VC version of Starfox 2.

You want to know why SSX is almost dead now? 30fps, I think the line was crossed when they started farting out racing games locked at 30fps.

I think the framerate was the least of the reboot's problems. Looser controls and gameplay, level design that was just plain irritating at times, and a lack of the attitude that made the original games what they were. But I was expecting something in the vein of the best games in the series, so I'm a bit biased.

Also, CoD isn't that bad, as long as you don't buy a new copy every year. It would probably be a lot better if they had a longer development cycle as well.

Just thought of another one...

You should play franchises in release order. Two main reasons, a) storyline and b) going backwards in mechanics would be too annoying.

I don't necessarily see Quick Time Events as a bad thing. Its always about the context how they're implemented.

They can either enhance a game or destroy it completely.

Coming from the PSX era of cutscene cutscene cutscene, QTEs is a great compromise between cinematic cutscene and interactivity. Its EXACTLY what the industry asked for.

In fact, it enhances the experience. Before, you'd get a last boss that you'd shoot over and over and over until the screen blacks out and all of a sudden they're on the floor bleeding out. No transition. They go from jumping around at superhuman agility, sponging up bullets to on the floor gasping.

With QTEs, you get the QTE transition. They go through a hand to hand brawl that you interact with (and can lose), and then the protagonist does something to make the end boss bleed out.

It makes sense.

QTEs have been the best solution to maintaining the "cutscene experience" while adding gameplay to it.

Gamers just like to complain about anything that "deludes" the "pure gaming experience." NES days, forever, right?

No wonder game developers and publishers find our niche particularly annoying.

The DreamCast was the best console ever. GTA, while good, is not worth the hype. Story wise it's fantastic but the combat mechanics are not that good.
They are ok, but you use them fairly often. You can drive, it's pretty good for a sandbox, but it's not a racer. GTA, jack of all trades, master of none.

Never was fond of Playstation controllers, they generally seem to make my thumb muscles sore relatively quickly. I do like the Xbox 360 controller though, and believe the Nintendo 64 controller was perfect.

The Split Controller design is the greatest thing to ever happen in gaming.

If the Wii Mote had a second analog stick and proper buttons it would be the single greatest controller ever created. I'm sad that I have to go back to having my hands feel so crushed with standard controllers.

- With the exception of Naughty Dog and Polyphony Sony's first party devs are pretty mediocre. Better then Microsofts for sure but the Sucker Punch's and Media Molecules of the stable are not very good not bad either just not good.

- All the COD games are very good. The gameplay is just so super polished compared to other shooters it's not fair. The issue with the franchise is fatigue. I count myself amoung the people who cannot buy what is basically the same game every year reskined. In fact I haven't bought a CoD since MW3 and haven't put serious hours into one since MW2.

- Halo 2 is the best Halo. Not for the single player. It was really bad. It's the best Halo because it's multiplayer is far and away the best in the series.

- The Elder Scrolls games are all boring and just downright terrible. And I love WRPGs. THey are souless and bland with awful combat and throwaway stories. The generic locations make the main hook of the game exploration repetitive and slow.

- Speaking of RPGs with the exception of the Souls games and Pokemon I have never played a fun JRPG. With the exception of the Souls games I think they are almost embarrassing to be caught playing. The art style of most of them is just incredibally off putting.

- Bioware is not that bad. TOR has turned into a very decent MMO. Decent enough that if you are into the genre there is fun to be had. ME3 is hated for it's bad ending but the rest of the game has some good moments and the gameplay is the best of the series. Dragon Age 2 however is an abortion of a game.

- Rift is a better MMO then WoW.

- Tomb Raider is as good as any of the Uncharted games with the exception of 2.

- The xbox 360 controller is the best I've ever used. Even with the D-pad.

- I'd be really happy if one or both of the two 'core' game console manufacturers died. I think Sony and Microsoft despite bringing out some kick ass games now and then are bad for the industry and the extra cost of developing for both platforms hurts developers. I'd love a one console future.

- Piggybacking on the last one exclusives suck and are bad for everybody. Unless it's something that can only be done on a certain platform. This mostly pertains to PC genres like MMOs and RTS's which would be compromised on consoles. No irrational hatred of anything here.

Can't think of anymore. Sorry for my terrible opinions. :)

I really liked Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 as a kid, but I don't really care for them now. I don't know why, I just can't get into them anymore.

Yoshi's Island is the best 2D platformer of all time.

I really, really don't like Skyrim, and I honestly don't understand the praise it gets.

Bayonetta is not good. Nor ok. Its merely playable.

Civ 2 is the best of the series.

Final Fantasy XII is amazing. Except Penelo.

The Armored Core series is hugely underrated. AC4 and AC4A didn't help.

GTAIV is the biggest disappointment of this gen, more so than FFXIII.

LBPs controls are fine and its one of Sony's best IPs .

The multiplayer in GoW Ascension is fun and worth playing.

Alice Madness Returns was/is great (and I need to beat it)

- Tomb Raider is as good as any of the Uncharted games with the exception of 2.

Don't think that's too controversial. 1 is a solid game, but I don't think most people hold it up to be an upper-tier achievement. 3 got the auto-pilot 90+ review scores, but most Uncharted 2 fans will tell you it was a definite regression and lacked polish.

2 is an undisputed (except by people in this thread of course) masterpiece, so it would be hard to outdo it.

GTA IV >>>>> Red Dead Redemption

I hated the emptiness of Red Dead Redemption. There was no life in the game, and the story was mediocre.

The Walking Dead game (telltale games) was boring and didn't really give you any freedom of choice because it all had the same outcomes (You just experience them with different people)

The controls in Smash Bros. games is the single dumbest mechanic in the series, and people stomach them out of sheer ignorance. I've tried on several occasions to bring it up in various threads on both that game and PS All-Stars, and I have never gotten a legitimate response -- either because the fans simply can't, or because the threads were reaching the end of their lifespan and I wasn't read by anyone.

There is no true reason on this green Earth why they have never supported Dpads, allowing is to short and/or long-tap to get moves out, and double-tap to run. What blows the mind even more is why Sony copied them to such an extent that they apparently did not tighten the controls, and the movements of the characters, at all.

Both are garbage series that owe their success to the popularity of the characters and general ignorance, which isn't the fault of the players as most people only have so much time to explore the medium, and those of us who know better don't do our part to educate others more passionately (lol). In a better world, PowerStone 1 would replace it in popularity across college campuses and tournament scenes. I should have tried harder to make my friends look at it back in college, but I was a coward who meekly conceded to superior numbers. I got them to spend a little bit of time with it, but I probably tore them up too badly with WangTang instead of gently guiding them through all the game's nuances, and soon the pressure was on to go back to Smash, where the playing field could be more equalized. Why I would mention PowerStone in the context of Smash Bros, btw, I'll leave for you to contemplate. I can imagine a good few of you are going "wtf" on the basis of one offering a wider range of movement alone, but try to ruminate how similar they actually are -- AND perversely enough, how PowerStone controls about 20x tighter yet also offers a full range of 3d movement. Then tell me why Smash's controls are so sloppy and loose when it's 2d.

- Mega Man 4, 5 and 6 all offer gameplay and level design just as good as anything in Mega Man 2.

- Dark Souls is a far better experience than Demon's Souls despite both games being outstanding.

- Unreal Tournament 3 was a fantastic tournament style FPS with amazing map design.

- Diablo III was a great ARPG.

-Skyrim is the best Elder Scrolls game

I think the best thing that could happen to consoles is PS4 having similar DRM to Xbone aimed at transferring profits from Gamestop to the publishers and developers.

I have an extremely unrealistic inkling of hope that the Wii U's failure will eventually force Nintendo to go third party Sega style, finally allowing me to play the next Zelda at 1080p on my PC with an Xbox 360 controller.

Also, it would be cool if Nintendo made a Zelda game that could actually hold a candle to Majora's Mask or Ocarina of Time. Not better, not even as good, how about just half as good Nintendo? You can do it!

Oh, and the only great game Bungie ever made was Halo 1.

I don't understand how so called real gamers can talk about Nintendo failing. Nintendo have made crazy profits that Sony can only dream of. The human race have been buying weaker powered games machines for one reason or another. Oh Well, money and profit are not important then?

Honestly, Nintendo make the kind of video games that are the reason I love games.

Half Life 2 is extraordinarily overrated.

Mediocre story, which ends on a stupid cliffhanger.
Mediocre game play, made even worse by terrible gun play.
Mediocre gravity gun used for idiotic seesaw "puzzles."
And the idea that being locked in a room, with control of your character, listening to someone talk for 10 minutes is somehow better than watching a 10 minute cut scene.

Bayonetta was really bland. I don't see what the hype was. The characters were boring, the music mediocre, and the entire time I was thinking I'd rather be playing Devil May Cry.

EDIT: Apparently I'd already put that in this thread before. I'm losing my mind apparently.

I originally thought Halo was good. But I think the series is continuing longer than it should.

Crafting in MMOs is boring. Guild Wars 2 World versus World is boring and the entire GW lore is uninteresting.

I think Minecraft is stupid.

I don't really like the indie game scene. Indie games feel like a waste of time unless they get a major release.

Supreme Commander, Dungeon Siege 1-2, and anything by Chris Taylor is terrible.

I never liked Pokemon.

Most micro-economic RTS games bore me to death. Games like Stronghold are terrible.

BioHazard and Silent Hill are two of the best game series ever made. I think most developers can't even come close.

Although the Zelda games are among my favorites, I think their story telling ranges from trivial to horrible.

Nintendo has never told a good story in any video game, and when they tried (Other M) they failed misserably.

This is a good opinion, I endorse it.

Naughty Dog should make movies or become a tech house. Their games this gen are nothing special and not that much fun

The Last of Us demo proved this even more.

In a sense, I think criticizing Nintendo games for storytelling is akin to criticizing theater for its lack of sophisticated digital CG effects. It's not exactly the same thing.

Nintendo tends to see stories in games as something that exist to support the experience of playing the game, and always subservient to the gameplay, even if that means the story comes off as disjointed or goofy by the standards of reading a book.

Other M, in a way, is a lot of people getting exactly what they should have been careful wishing for: a stereotypically "cinematic" modern video game that goes gameplay-CG movie-gameplay-CG movie, etc. My own controversial opinion there is that Other M's story is not anywhere nearly bad, or offensive, as outrage has painted it. It's just "okay" by typical video game standards.

But it wasn't what Nintendo does best, or their most comfortable way of using story in games.

Japan will save gaming as western developers continue jerking off over cinematic experiences and make their games so easy that a monkey can complete them.

Twilight Princess is the only Zelda game I never want to play or see again, it's dreadfully boring. Everything about it felt like a chore and Midna was the only bright spark.

Link to the Past is the worst Zelda game. It boggles my mind why people love it. It is such a piece of shit.

Also I never understood the love for the Super NES. I had one when I was young but never really gave a shit because all the games I played felt so soulless.

If ANYONE needs to Learn To Play it's the freaking Dark Souls backstabbers...but dang it feels good to best of one of those knuckle draggers. :)

The Wii U is not under powered. If one were to take some time with it..they could do some really nice things.....SHIELDS UP!!!

Skyrim is gorgeous but fights like Rock'em Sock'em robots

Just Cause 2 is awesome and kinda boring at the same time....how do you achieve that?

The Wind Waker Put me to sleep....all that SAILING...ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzZZZZzzzz*

With the exception of RE4 which is one of the top 5 games ever made the Resident Evil series is bad. The originals suffer from awful controls and nonsensical stories. The modern games are astonishingly even worse in the story department and have lost what made RE4 great with too much reliance on combat. I can generally get through everything I play but I only made it through Leon and half of Chris's campaign in RE6.

Call of Juarez: The Cartel is very good. Techland clearly didn't have the time or the money to properly implement the new systems they devised - like the ping-pong cover mechanic or the covert 'Secret Agenda' missions - but one day another studio will rip one of them off, and everyone will fawn it up like champions.

It ain't pretty though.

The Zelda games have simple stories but horrible? I think most of the games, especially Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening, have a great fairy tale quality to them.
Twilight Princess is the only Zelda game I never want to play or see again, it's dreadfully boring. Everything about it felt like a chore and Midna was the only bright spark.
You know how LTTP 3DS reuses the overworld and gives us new dungeons? Twilight Princess needs the opposite treatment.
