what jrpg are you playing right now ?

I am playing several right now.

FF7 - PSN Version on my PS3.
Dragon Quest 9 for DS on my 3DS.
PSO 2 on PC.
FF2 aka FF4- Virtaul Console version on the WII.

Xenoblade, 10 hours in, getting back into this. Currently in some ether mine dungeon or something.

Also working on SMT3: Nocturne, Soul Hackers, Devil Survivor, Persona 3, Denpa Men... I'll never finish all these...

Etrian odyssey 4

Awesome game. Minimal story. No real characters, ALL battle mechanics and exploration. It's a real fun game. I highly recommend it if you're getting tired of plot plot plot plot nonsense in your JRPGs and just want a FUN game that is all about exploring and a strategic battle system.

Just got Grandia 2 and 3 in the mail today, much earlier than I expected to get them. Once I finish my Oracle of Seasons/Ages replay I'll delve into those.

FFVII, just finished losing Aries to Tseng. Explosions going off on pillar in Sector 7, plate falls, everyone there's dead!

Xenoblade Chronicles. 24 hours in (just reached
Eryth Sea
) and the game is teetering between almost boring and mildly compelling. I hope it picks up. I was able to sit through around 80 hours of FFXII so I think I can pull this one out

Today I pulled Valkyria Chronicles from my backlog, and boy I'm glad I did. Never got more than five hours in, but this time I'm committed to really digging into this game, at least until The Last of Us comes out.

Playing Chrono Trigger for the first time on the DS. I'm only 3 hours in, loving it so far. Befor that I finished Ni No Kuni, one of my top 5 games for this generation. After Chrono Trigger I will be starting with Star Ocean 4 (PS3) or Suikoden Tierkreis, haven't decided yet...

Just finished The Last Story, I'd say it's easily my favorite Mistwalker game. The combat was decent, but I enjoyed the story for the most part and the banter between characters was great and usually funny.

Final Fantasy Type-0.
I don't understand a single thing but still find it to be a better game than FFXIII or FFXIII-2.

How this game is not out on Vita is beyond me. Square should just have released a digital PSP version that is compatible with the Vita in the west. A possible HD port on PS3 and/or Xbox 360.

Other than that, I've paused my Fire Emblem and Trails in the Sky playthroughs because I haven't played much at all lately.

Ni No Kuni.

Been a long time since i played a Jrpg, feels good. It's not a bad game, the gameplay and story are great. The graphics are amazing too !

Right now, I'm back on Atelier Iris 2. It's not great, but the Switch mechanic (switching between protags) is interesting.

i can't decide what to play:

final fantasy: 4 heroes of light
golden sun: dark dawn
kingdom hearts 3D: dream drop distance
infinite space
puzzle quest
contact

halp!

sadly ni no kuni - had to put it down for a beat as i was about to set sail after the 3rd town.... havent picked it up since. been playing vita much more than ps3, and the one time i did go back to ps3 recently i opted to play bioshock 2. will go back to NNK asap, just need to find a good few hrs to sit and sink.

edit: i also have xenoblade chronicles sitting in shrink wrap - not sure if i should crack it open or not.

edit 2: i would love to play Eternal Sonata as i enjoyed the demo thoroughly. stopped playing FF9 on vita recently too. i think i just finished the first disc recently.

probably golden sun since that seems to be the easiest.

Resonance of Fate.

What the fuck is going on.

watch some youtube vids on the battle gameplay

Currently stuck on what to finish:

Tales of legendia chapter 5
Suikoden tactics just after pops died
heartgold in kanto the second half
devil summoner 2 still at the beginning

Playing Wild ARMs for the first time, and first in the series. Liking it thus far, too bad about the battles being ugly 3D instead of 2D.

Also playing Star Ocean 3, never beat it before and I'm now working through the series (beat FD and SE). Not far at all, and I remember it being soooo long.

The World Ends With You. Is that considered an RPG? Regardless, I can't believe it took me this long to play the game. It's amazing. I hope to make a LTTP thread once I'm a full member.

For SO3, I stopped at that bonus dungeon, midway through because I messed up the sword synthesis on the laevetein blade (sp?). The boss I was stuck at was lenneth, and she did a tremendous amount of damage.

The synthesis issue was that the ultimate sword did not have the desired effect of life on hit. well, it did, just not enough.

Break that sucker open and experience one of the greatest JRPGs in recent memory. I originally thought it was overrated and one of those "gaf overhype" games, but I was wrong once it finally clicked with me. It has one of the few jrpg stories that hooked me like a show like LOST would, where I just had find out what happens next. The world itself is awe-inspiring at times. I am sure a sealed copy would be worth a great sum of cash but you are missing out on something truly great by not playing it.

Lufia II - I got some good loot out of the Ancient Cave, now I finished the Dragon Mountain Dungeon and "the world's most difficult trick." It's great fun, yet the battle system, story and graphics(horrible monster designs) don't detract from the overall package.

Phantasy Star IV - It's a little hard to tell you where I am without spoiling certain plot points(and boy are they surprising). Any basic, turn-based battle system like Phantasy Star IV deserves macros.

Dragon Quest IV - At the Azimuth, I'm exploring the underground dungeon there.

Probably the only list where ToP GBA comes out on top.

Agreed. Tales of Phantasia GBA was my first exposure to the series and I didn't approach it again for years...

I would recommend 4 Heroes of Light, it's really underrated in my opinion. The story is quite thin (but still funny and enjoyable) and the game is very old school and sometimes frustrating but it's really worth it. And I think it's probably the best looking 3D game on the DS, great design and colors.

I've heard great things about Infinite Space but I couldn't get into it. And some people might disagree but you should pass on KH3D and Golden Sun, those games were both very disappointing to me.

Just finished FFXII, started FFXIII
Am thinking about Rogue Galaxy and Chrono Cross ( so much PCSX2 goodness)
Chrono Cross maybe
Maybe Xenoblade on Dolphin

FFX and KH were on the list, but the remakes mean they can wait.

Thoughts on the next one? Leaning towards Rogue Galaxy on PCSX2. The PS2 was a JRPG gamer's dream of a console

Remember that Rogue Galaxy might look pretty at first glance but the repetition in dungeons will drive you nuts. Some people don't like the battle system but I had a fairly good time with battles.

Tales of Graces F. Liking it a lot more than Vesperia personally.

I have to say though, the main char looks like a 70's disco reject....

Weirdly, that lead is the only reason I want to play Graces F, for some reason his design attracts me to the game.

What? Well, then play Dead Souls, you deserve it! :P

Take it, it's not popular?

Well anything will be better then Shu screaming "I won't give up" for 90 of his lines 13 hours straight.

Don't know about popular, but Dead Souls is just a big mass of wasted potential. I thought the idea was great, but the actual game just doesn't work very well.

You need to watch a marathon of Captain Tsubasa....I enjoyed Blue Dragon, a lot more than that other Mistwalker game on the 360.

Can't come up with many JRPG characters with good design tbh

I think I'll give either Star Ocean 3 or Resonance of Fate a try next. I remember RoF being a bit too hard, and SO3 has that awful, awful plot twist, but it's not like I'm drowning in RPGs.

Don't know what Captian Tsubasa is.

What I do know is Blue Dragon has the most shallow characters, boring battle system and ugh story in a JRPG this gen. Even other games like IU, Star Ocean, and other low rated RPG's have at least one thing to make them servicable.

The closest thing Blue Dragon has is the Job System, which is completely wasted by it being piss easy.

As for LO, the Short Stories alone made that game much more worth playing then Blue Dragon. That and while it wasn't hard, it at least had some bite if you didn't power level.

Yep, and this is why you play with the Hard Mode DLC, although it does introduce a couple of larger difficulty spikes - although that's not totally unexpected.

You mentioned that earlier in the thread to me I believe. However I hate this POS so much, and I was already 10 hours in when you managed to tell me that and frankly I rather eat Rat poison then play that 10 hours all over again.

Honestly, even with the Hard Mode DLC, it's not a great game for me. It makes it better, but not great. But you are right in stating the job system is the bright spot.

Valkyrie Profile/2 have awesome designs. Not overly flashy but not dull either. RoF is pretty standard once you get the hang of it, the rules are just...different. And you don't get to upgrade weapons all that often, which really hurts the first half of the game.

Valkyrie Profile Lenneth is amazing. Don't care for two, but you can't go wrong with Lenneth.

taking a break from Star Ocean 3 and it's ridiculous time consuming mechanics (you can only craft if you go back to the starship ;_;) to play Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen.

Wow, really hope Bethesda pays attention to DD and the Souls games as far as combat goes. DD is so much more fun and challenging than the Elder Scrolls games and I like the environments and the fact that you're not playing alone.

I'm doing an escort mission in DD last night - unfortunately I don't make it to the next castle before night falls. I'm then jumped in quick succession by wolves, bandits, wolves again, bandits again and then when I finally slay the last bandit after an epic 20 minute battle a griffin leaps out of the darkness and eats me (don't think I've ever experienced a jump scare in a jrpg til then). Frustrating, but when I finally got through that section of the forest I felt like I'd accomplished something.

I wish I had rented DD before DA though. All those extra Port Crystals you get from having played the first game in DA would really be handy at this point.
