I really hope the Final Fantasy series can get back on track with the new one. It used to be I'd die searching for info on the latest FF game, my old internet nicknames being Final Fantasy related (some enterprising GAFers will even remember my original two neoGAF avatars - VIVI, and Shuma Gorath), and now I can't even get excited with a healthy dose of skepticism. I really hope this one comes together for SquareEnix.

Plus they probably need it as a company lol

What would be the real world performance difference between 1.8 TFLOPS and 800-900 GFLOPS? Are we talking 1080p/60fps vs. 720/60fps? I want to know how much of a boat anchor the Xbone would be for multiplatform games.

Depends I suppose. You may see boxes marked, optimized for PS4 or, optimized to run on XBOne. Lol.

Rumour has it MS is going the apple route of having newer hardware every few years so it sort of makes sense they are low balling it now. If in 2 years when the Xbox One: Two is out and is 2x as powerful things will get interesting. People will be angry, some people will be happy. Will be interesting to see if console gaming can be done that way.

Oh there will be some fun times ahead this gen.

Two year console cycles are just begging to cause an industry crash - not that MS would probably care since it seems their in the cable box business now instead.

To top it off, they're having problems getting a system that's up to par spec wise out eight years after the last system, I can't imagine them scrambling to have a two year turn around for every new iteration.

I'm not really sure what to expect. MS may have a lot to reveal game wise.

Sony should likely, in my opinion, reveal the box at least. They've already talked about some games, and we have a list of others out there which I assume they'll cover.

My question is, is there more upside to MS's reveal than Sony's. more games we don't know about.. Etc. I feel I know more about the PS4 than XBOne.

I'm not gonna claim im an "insider" but having been through E3 since the original here is what I would expect:

- They will absolutely reveal the box. They are just 5 months away from release so expect almost full disclosure except they will do their best to keep info about always on, used games, DRM, etc. vague as hell. So will Microsoft.

-Your right that MS has a bigger advantage to surprise since they haven't shown anything and have kept leaks tight. I'm expecting more surprises at the MS conference with the PS4 conference showing impressive footage of the games they have already announced combined with a sweet Final Fantasy trailer and maybe one other big announcement. I'm not expecting them to show Naughty Dog or Santa Monica's next game even though we would all like them too.

Coupled with the much faster Ram a half as powerful GPU is a massive blow. Multi plats would definitely have a big advantage on PS4, but exclusives and games optimised for Sony's console would be night and day.

Man, if Xbone has a downgrade, then it probably won't be able to 60fps BF4, which means that EA would stop the devs from 60fps'ing the PS4 version because of their partnership with Microsoft. Is this a plausible scenario?

I haven't had cable for about 4 years now. I wonder how many others are like me.

Edit: Cable as a TV service provider that is, my internet is cable though.

No. DICE, particularly the BF team, likes the PS4 and doesn't care too much for XBO. They may scrap 60fps, which has never been confirmed to be a real goal, but the PS4 version will still look a lot better.

ps4 is 200% more powerful than xbox one confirmed... lol

Wasn't Sony always the most powerful when they enter a generation?

PS1>Saturn
PS2>Dreamcast
PS3>Xbox

well theoretically speaking.

Yes and no. The GPU is weaker and it has its memory split into two chunks versus the 360's larger single chunk, but the Cell can do some nifty shit when you get down to the metal and wrap your brain around it. PS3 actually came across weaker in most games, but hardcore studios like Naughty Dog can pull off some amazing witchcraft.

From what I understand there is a hefty amount of rasterisation work being offloaded to the Cell to make up for the GPU.

What if ps3 had 1gb of ram or 2

That shit would suck for those of us that play on multiple consoles. It brings the baseline down, that sucks for PS4 owners and definitely sucks for PC gamers. Maybe WiiU owners would benefit but that's it.

I feel the biggest surprise in the upcoming years is how strong the PS3 and to an extent the 360 will thrive. I don't expect yearly Gen 8 console hardware or software will outsell Gen 7 hardware of software until 2015/2016.

just remember that this one is being made by all the good people and basically none of the bad people. There's always reason to be skeptical with many games but this one inherently has so much more going for it compared to ff13.

Talking about Versus or FF15 or whatever they're calling it these days.

People are looking at past consoles thinking devs will develop for the lowest spec'd unit. But I think the difference this gen is, since consoles and PCs are all the same architecture, they can now develop for the best system (PC) then just scale the games down similar to adjusting settings for lower end PCs.

Lol the console version of BF4 isn't going to effect the PC version in any way. Don't worry about that. Dice are PC guys and if you have a decent PC that Frostbite 3.0 is going to run as fast as your hardware allows it to.

no EA games would be better on ps4 this generation, that includes BF, you think after EA announced they have a special partnership with MS they're gonna put the better version of their game on the competition hardware? no DICE son

Who was weaker during 2 generations ago? PS1, Gamecube, Saturn?

I'm in the same boat. The only time I watch live TV of any kind it's over an antenna and only when there's some kind of weather event or other emergency that I want to watch local news coverage of to stay informed.

I find the whole "the least powerful has always won" argument rather worthless to make because pretty much every generation besides this one has had larger release date differences between the top consoles of the generation. This is the first generation I can remember where we're going to see two new consoles launching in the same year - possibly in the same month with one another, and one having a definite power advantage.

The question, of course, is how visible that power advantage is in launch software, and how well the other aspects of the system play to consumers (regardless of what we as the hardcore think about it).

Oh, Definitely. And they will remain relevant longer than the previous gens. No matter how excited we - enthusiasts are for this I still see it hard for them (MS and Sony) to make a compelling argument to the casual crowd, especially when all of their multimedia needs are taken care of on numerous other devices.

True for DICE but what about the rest of EA? The EA Sports Ignite engine? I imagine they would target X1 spec, no?

hardware revision isn't new in console cycle, in ps3 7 year lifespan, we got ps3 fat, ps3 slim, and ps3 super slim. the difference this time might be if MS took the revision as chance to upgrade the spec too. probably asking developer to make setting for the different xbox kinda like in PC you got low, medium, high setting.

Not sure about the sports games but since DICE is also making the engine that powers every non-sport EA title, I wouldn't worry about those.

I meant 3rd party game development in general. As a guy who got into PC gaming 2-3 years ago and love it so much that it's become my main platform I got used to the idea (from PC-GAF) that new consoles would raise the baseline for developers. But now we have people damn near celebrating the X1's deficiencies where all I can see is 3rd party development being gimped. The PS4 isn't getting stronger, the X1 would be getting weaker. If it was the former I'd be happy with that, as Sony has my money day one and the (already lower) X1 specs would be the same. The latter only fucks up my other platforms, making devs have to keep in mind a severely underpowered X1 when designing my PS4 or PC games. Sorry if I'm rambling, it just sucks.

Urgh I hate posts like this. The industry doesn't work like this, Xbox versions may well be superior due to exclusive DLC or extra game modes, maybe even by launching first, but EA are not going to deliberately gimp a version on purpose and risk looking like technical incompetents and idiots. They are Proffesional game designers at these studios, and most take a pride in their work.

Things don't work that way. No dev would agree to it and they're not going to hire someone to monitor the technical side of things to decide what is and isn't acceptable for one version over the other.

Again don't worry, PC versions - just like always - will use higher assets and feature extra graphical bells and whistles, they'll also be capable of running at higher resolutions and faster frame rates.

It's funny because entering a generating Sony was always ahead tech wise but at the end they end up being the weakest.

At the end of Gen 1 the N64 was more powerful but nintendo sticking to cartridges messed that system's capability up big time. Sony won

Gen 2 the Xbox was more powerful than the Dreamcast PS2 and Gamecube. Sony won

Gen 3 PS3 and Xbox are almost equal although Sony had better tech like Blu ray, blu tooth etc. Nintendo kinda went their own path with the Wii. Wii won

Gen 4 PS4 is the most powerful, Xbone in the middle and the Wii U is the weakest. things are going to get crazy next gen.

The "least powerful has always won" argument has been BS since inception as well. The PS1 was better equipped for 3D than the Saturn and won; the PS2, though less powerful than the Gamecube and Xbox, was more powerful than the Dreamcast and buried this competitor so quickly that most people forget to include it when they make that argument.

I think Microsoft is betting on the same notion Nintendo was betting on with the Wii, namely that most people won't notice the difference. They may be right, though I personally wouldn't bet on it. If the difference actually IS 60 fps vs 30 fps, that's something that's going to definitely be noticeable as people get used to it.

It's certainly be...interesting if DICE games aren't superior on the PS4

On the other hand DICE employees seemed really hyped after the PS Meeting.

Ok, but what about scope and scale? Not entirely sure but maybe even physics interactions being toned down or held back? Game design has to have a technological breaking point, right? All I'm saying is if the pot is spoiled it doesn't matter who has the biggest plate.

Yes, I understand that in the grand scheme of things it's not like the sky is falling. I just don't want that nagging "what if" in the back of my mind, lol.

Yeah, that whole argument is flawed. There were other major, factors why the less powerful consoles came out on top in the arguments that are always listed. All it proves is that higher tech specs are not a primary factor, not that they're irrelevant or a hinderence.

Again, that's pretty much the case with every console generation. PC's outclass them vastly within a year if you are buying top range tech. PS4 when 'coding to the metal' will likely be able to showcase more advanced graphics than most high end PC's for at least a year or two (not talking about those PC guys with high end i7s, Titan cards and 16GB of Ram).

Games will always be 'held back' by consoles, but by the same token no developer ever works in a closed environment when developing for PC, so in a way PC kinda holds itself back as well ;)
