The Last of Us - Review Thread [Emargo up, scores in OP.]

Non-motion sick enducing gameplay and meticulously designed story with real characters. The sixth game i'm buying this gen. Others? MGS4, uncharted 1/2, Gran turismo 5, gow3 and now the last of us.

Also, by the way they're games are shaping up(Crash, jak, uncharted series). I'm starting to look at naughty dog as the next pixar.

Possibly more annoying than a few people getting in a tizzy over a review score are the legion of people only in here to be gleeful and highlight those in a tizzy.

Some reviews actually said the graphics were a bit uneven. Have you completed the game?

I think the demo is clear evidence that at least some of the building interiors are not particularly impressive.

I won't be surprised if the graphical high points are at the top of the competition, though.

Maybe if we complain enough Polygon will change the score.

Anyone annoyed by that AI not noticing Ellie? Seems really noticeable and doesn't seem to jive with the realistic tone of the game

I'd assume she's hiding in most of the situations.

Gamekult has given good grades to mediocre/ovverhyped games before (8/10 to Diablo 3, Bioshock Infinite, Guild Wars 2 and Mass Effect 3) but if they gave The Last of Us a 9 it's still a good sign.

People getting mad at slightly lower scores need to chill.

Not everyone has the exact same experience(in any medium) or have the same tastes.

The majority consensus seems to be the game is incredible and that is all that really should matter to people who are interested in playing it.

Sad that we've even been trained to see 7.5 as " highly negative"

Only working within the range reviewers have narrowed down over the years. Have to understand they're working within it too, surely that affects the score they give? A 6 can kill a game. It's real fucked up.

Do you feel like the game is that length because it feels like the natural lifespan of the mechanics or that it's that length because they needed it for the story?

Definitely story. The mechanics are fully introduced and integrated into the experience by hour 8 or even before depending on how fast you "get it". The game doesn't evolve beyond that.

They throw in some new weapons here and there, but in the end you will have a set routine of taking on stuff and will probably stick to that (at least I did, unless I was forced into a corner due to not enough ammo, and had to resort to using weapons I was not comformtable with).

But I am happy that ND didn't try to force in some one off gimmick gameplay sections just to freshn up the experience, they have a really solid gameplay loop and they stick to it. For me I was a bit worn out by it in the end, but I doubt that will be the consencus, due to people have different playstyles and the game is surprsingly adapt at supporting them.

Our French review is up, no score as usual.

No videos for the moment, we have to get them approved and Naughty Dog (or whoever is doing the approval) couldn't even play our 59.94 captures correctly...

Anyway, Driftwood who reviewed it absolutely loved the game, despite a few not so important flaws.

We'll try translating the review, but it's *huge* so maybe we'll have to just go with a quick summary.

Haven't read this thread... but no surprise with that polygon score.

Once you take money from a console maker you have no credibility going forward.

God damn, amazing scores! I've purposefully watched very little media on this and won't read any reviews. It has now become a day 1 purchase.

There's ALWAYS one website trying to get attention, and this is not a conspiracy theory.

I'm sure Polygon review is the one getting the most clicks, it's just the way it is. Next time we have a new blockbuster, be prepared.

IGN stays unbothered with their mainstream 10/10.

Not sure if facetious but this is what I'm talking about. Is this a genuine claim or is it fanboy skepticism because PS3 titles don't fair well here? And if it's true, then isn't an agenda like this some form of dirty business? THAT is my only concern... based on these claims.
Based on the claim of one post?

C'mon man.

At this point, though, I feel like that many more words would just be belaboring things. The Last of Us is a triumphant integration of strong storytelling and gameplay. It's a perfectly fitting swan song for the PlayStation 3 as Naughty Dog and Sony begin to turn their focus to a new generation of hardware. It's a game people are going to be talking about for a while, and you're going to want to be a part of the conversation.

The Good:

The well-written relationship between Joel and Ellie, strengthened by top-notch animation and voice acting
A gripping, tightly paced narrative with a surprising conclusion
AI partners that actually come in handy
Stealth and gun-slinging are both equally valid gameplay options
Good mix of bits of extreme tension and quiet exploration
Some of the most beautiful environments I've ever seen in a game
Wonderful graphic and sound design
The Bad:

Human AI is inconsistent
Can be hard to tell where to go next
The Ugly

Other games still have loading screens!
Verdict: Consider picking up a PS3 if you don't have one.

The amount of 10s being thrown around is worrying.

Uncharted 2 (even 3!) and Bioshock Infinite got the same treatment, and we all know how shallow and repetitive those games turned out to be, they provided deep emotional response through the roof though!

I wonder when was the exact moment that game reviewers and gamers in general decided to get dumb all of a sudden.

i love that length, my first re4 playthrough took 22 hours and it was my favorite game of all time

imo if the gameplay is fun and not a gimmick more length is awesome

The thing about length is that we have an infinite amount of "fun" things to do, from playing great multiplayer titles, going through backlogs, reading, watching movies/tv, hanging out with friends, hiking, sports, etc. so my philosophy when it comes to length is make your work, whatever medium it is, as long as the length at which you can deliver nothing but your top tier A-game, because that's what I could choose to go do if your game ever dips below that quality; then you're making me spend my time in-optimally if you do make me play through less high tier work. For example, Dota 2 is always fun; in fact, it's almost always better than whatever else I could be playing to me. If you cannot bring your A-game past a certain point or the game starts to drag because you're going through redundant material mechanically (and, yes, I absolutely felt this way about RE4 at times) I shouldn't be playing your game then; I should be playing Dota 2.

I really don't care much about the scores, the shitstorm and whatever.

But you have to wonder how one or two reviews can stand out with a different opinion than 95% of all other reviews.
I think it is just a matter of "Oh hey, look at us, we gave one of the highest rated games a not so high score. You should read us and while you are at it, why not click some ads and bump up our number of views?!"

a range of opinions is great and reflects a healthier critical community. i do feel a bit bad for naughty dog in that the last of us' more systemic approach and realistic characters almost seems like a reaction to the uncharted 3 criticism, yet they're not going to get the 'universal acclaim' review average they probably hope for.

not that bad mind. they still made one of the best reviewed games of the year and i'm sure it'll sell well given how much people love zombies these days.

Link it when it's done! Looking forward to reading it!

This is impressive. And so what at the Polygon score? They had their reasons, but don't let it stop you from enjoying a game you have been looking forward to. lol

I'm not trolling. I'm actually pissed. But whatever I'm calm now. Just think it's bullshit is all and unfair to Naughty Dog and Sony.

we should write a browser extension that adds 2.5 score to tlou, then every time you visit it will seem like they gave it a 10

pm me if you're interested
