Microsoft: Xbox One DRM has a "lot of advantages"

There are a "lot of advantages of having your content assigned to you digitally" and the Xbox One has been designed with the used market in mind from the beginning, Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer has told Edge magazine.

Asked for his position on the used game market, Spencer said: "I think the whole idea of a secondary market is important and it'll be important in the next generation, and we've designed with that in mind from the beginning."

He added that DRM can be very beneficial: "We think there are a lot of advantages of having your content assigned to you digitally – we did that on 360 with cloud-saved games – and we want to do that with content".

"We understand there are implications... just know that we recognise the importance of that market and we've designed with it in mind from the beginning."

He said further details would be shared at a later point.

Microsoft is yet to give a definitive answer on how Xbox One will treat used games.

really? I was convinced they were going to tell us what a terrible idea it was and how they're willingly and gleefully fucking over the consumer.

[insert mock outrage here]

I remember when being silent for Microsoft was hurting them.

Then they talked...kind of...and it made it worse.

Go back to being quiet until you can actually describe something. Please.

and a lot of folks in the dead of the midwest... or desert sections of california or anywhere else in the continental united states that could theoretically not obtain service from a local cable provider because their service has never and probably will never develop towards them.

Was expecting a list or at least a brief statement about what their plan is
Was this PR stint necessary?

I really appreciate that Microsoft is doing this. :)

I'm so happy that when I buy my Xbox One at launch, alongside with Forza Motorsports 5, I can just put the disc in, and always have it with me on my harddrive, no longer needing the disc.

And then I can take my copy to my Friends House and play Forza Motorsports 5 together splitscreen, without me needing to bring my game! All digital and all perfect!

Microsoft is doing good with the Xbox One so far, hype!

Is this the first time Microsoft has officially confirmed there will be DRM on the system?

I mean, we all know it's going to be there, but you know what I mean.

You can install retail games without the need to verify the disc every time. That's about the only advantage I can think of.

How the hell do you make a comment like this and still fail to say anything?

I do like the advantages it gives my wallet, since I'm not buying one.

Bingo.

MS: "We're enabling you to access your content digitally anywhere.."

Journalist: "How exactly will that work?"

MS: "Oh look at that bird outside!"

Journalist: "I don't see anything.. So you mentioned advantages, what are these advantages?"

MS: "Well, you can access your games anywhere you want to."

Journalist: "We could already do that by putting the disc in any console and starting the game."

MS: "This is better, because.. reasons."
