Giantbomb says EA, Ubisoft & Activision are the ones pushing for used games DRM

But I thought EA was listening to their customers and discontinuing the online pass because they love us?

Leave it up to them all they want. Don't make it mandatory and I'm free to support companies who don't use it.

The big three.

These guys need to realize something. The reason the video game industry is contracting is not because of used games, it's because games are over priced, it's because there is very little diversity, it's because there are countless sequels.

EA and Ubi are no surprise but I didn't honestly expect Activision to care all that much since they haven't implemented Online Passes or tried any always online DRM.

As I see only bad things coming from both EA and Activision, I am not surprised. But it's sad that Ubisoft jumped on this train, they make some good games.

This thread is a little misleading, they are stating opinions not facts based on sources. I'm of the opinion that this is absolutely true, but don't misinterpret this as news.

Can we start a campaign like the #PS4NODRM thing?

EA, Ubisoft and Activision's titles should be boycotted if they are literally ACTIVELY looking to fuck the consumer. I mean, every business is greedy and about the bottom line - but at least many of them try not to look like they do outwardly.

EA doesn't surprise me with the removal of online passes earlier. Activision doesn't surprise me either cause Kotick is a greasy douchebag who just wants money. Ubisoft does surprise me considering they throw their support towards the Wii U, 3DS, and Vita.

i refuse to believe my french brethren would betray me. ubi is one of the good ones...

they are... .. . >____>

Maybe the other two publishers ganged up on Ubisoft and threatened them to support used games DRM, and Ubisoft surrendered :p

no one is more in cahoots with anyone else. there are deals being made either now or years ago that we won't see come to fruition till years down the road. so no, most likely it wasn't those three publishers pulling the strings, for all we could know and speculate is that someone at Microsoft lost a golf game to some of the reps to these publishers and they'll take a hit to the image for this.

Next time though, the impetus will be from Microsoft to the publishers.

Exactly. All this DRM shit is going to accomplish is make people buy even less games. If I can't trade games in when I'm done with them, I'm not buying as many new games because I'm a fucking actor. I don't have thousands of dollars of disposable income to waste on toys every month.

I buy new games with the money I get from trading in games I don't want to keep in my collection. Cut that off, I buy less new games. I can't be the only person who does this.

it's the same guy who also said this

kotick stated that focusing on franchises that "have the potential to be exploited every year on every platform with clear sequel potential and have the potential to become $100 million franchises" has "worked very well for Activision Blizzard". Kotick described this business strategy as "narrow and deep" or "annualizable" and cited it as key to attracting development talent who may not be drawn to "speculative franchises"

as soon as a 'COD' is released people will flock. people have short attention span.

While certainly EA (the inventors of the online pass) has been pushing for this, I doubt that Ubisoft and Activision have been pushing rabidly for this, at least based on the past actions of both of those companies.

Activision has never implemented an online pass of any kind and have been vocally supportive of used games many times in the past.

And Ubisoft doesn't require you to be online to play their PC games on Uplay, so the position that Microsoft is holding is more extreme than what Ubisoft does on their own platform.

To me, this is just deflecting blame from Microsoft. Since there are no fees being levied on retailers or traders by default, the motive isn't just for a cheap cash grab, and we will know which publishers want to use it as such because third parties are able to fine if they desire.

At the end of the day, the lion's share of the blame should go towards the platform holder that enabled these publishers to do these things in the first place.

Publishers: we need more money because AAA titles are killing us!
Publishers: lets screw over the consumers, that will give us more money!!

It really shouldn't though. Ubi has done fairly well of late in establishing itself in the AAAA market. So it makes sense they'd want in on this. This drives all the money towards those games. And now that they have a robust lineup that qualifies, they'll benefit in the market shift towards these games.

Not at all surprising.

Are people surprised? There is a reason why EA dropped the online pass and why Sony has been quiet in regards to the used games issue. There only needed to be one company to come out to take the heat and MS was the one to do it.

shit, and here I was just boycotting them for making shit games I don't want to play :/

Hey look it's the 3 companies who've been dropping shit bombs on the industry long before any of this DRM nonsense started popping up. No surprises here.

Like I said in the other thread
Sony should let them implement their own DRM off their own backs and not implement it system-wide.
Because I have no fuckin' problem ignoring their games, I've done it long enough.
Yup. If Microsoft cuts their policy down to this I'll buy a Xbone too.

they publish the ones that sell.
Which combined with this does a lot to move me from ambivalent to their output for the most part to wanting them to go the fuck away. At least become PC exclusive or something where it's not like we had this kind of freedom anyway due to ease of piracy, but I really hate how they can fuck up the whole of gaming when I don't even buy much if anything of theirs at least at full price, most of their games I got through Steam/Amazon sales whereas it's other companies I was willing to pay more or get day one, even on consoles.

I can see EA.

Ubisoft and Activision are odd, considering they're two of the few publishers actually releasing Wii U games.

And Ubisoft have just removed their DRM from PC?

Ill be boycotting ever company that wants DRM. Easy enough for me to do....
capcom and konami on the other hand might be hard for me. I need my RE and MGS

Of course it isn't the japanese companies because their home market is so tied to the 2nd hand market. At the very least PS4 will be open in Japan

Prediction: Sony leaves DRM decisions up to the publishers. EA, Ubisoft, and Activision games will come with DRM. Gamers cry and rally together for a boycott and make hashtags and online petitions and all that jazz, then buy Mass Effect 4 anyway (it just looks so good!). Hooray, now there's DRM for everyone

I doubt those three are pushing it. Doesn't seem like its in their nature to pushing anti-consumer stuff.

Well, not like I was buying EA or Activision games but they just made 200% sure I will never buy anything from them, ever. Bravo!

This is what leads me to believe Sony will follow suit. If they don't it'll be an amazing console but so was the Dreamcast and look at how far it got without EA.

Not shocking if true.

What I can't get over is how blinkered the industry in general is on this "issue". Once used games are eliminated and it makes no difference whatsoever, it will interesting to see what the next scapegoat is.

Hey guys, maybe you should look at your own financial management issues first. I know.....it's a lot to ask :p

The only companies that benefit are the ones with yearly franchises.

Imagine being in total control of the ownership and resale of your yearly franchise!!!
