Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

The only good thing from this mess :

You are in control of when Kinect sensing is On, Off or Paused: If you don’t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command -- “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you’ll need to turn it back on for these experiences.

The problem though is who is going to buy all those old games. Nobody is going to wait three months for a five dollar discount. So the used games Gamestop is going to sell are going to have to be heavily discounted.

how is anyone going to support a console that its not gooing to have a market in the future?!! think about the N64 market right now, now think about that but with the xbox one (taking into consideration how time and those restriction would affect it)... how can people talk about the "advantages"... i dont even...

Wow this thread got massive.

I wrote off XBone a while ago. This just secures that write-off even further.

I'm not going to pretend PS4 won't have some form of DRM, but I don't think it will be as restrictive and draconian as the XBone. A 24 hour check won't be required, but titles from EA, Activision and other non-exclusive titles will require registration. This is why I feel more publishers will go to Sony over the next generation.

but it does not say they could not either, if it turns out to be true, yes I will acknowledge that. I know someone that owns a local mom and pop here and Ill check in with him to see what he finds out in the next week or so.

This ventures much much further with 'always-on Kinect', effective used games cartel, forbidding private sales and trading etc (NOTE: physical goods, steam is all-digital)

Also, steam has gotten under much scrutiny and e.g. their refund and return policy is effectively overridden by EU
 
No rentals is a breaker for me. Hard to imagine what is even possible for them to do to convince me to get on board with buying full-price any new game I want to play.

You can give a game to a friend only if they have been on your friends list for 30 days, and then it is stuck with them.

EDIT: I am at least glad they've finally just come forward and made a very clear, very(if not 100%) comprehensive statement on this stuff. Ball's in your court Sony.

Everything you described in your post prior is precisely why people are being (justifiably so) resistant to this change. People don't naturally dislike change if it's beneficial for them; they dislike it if it's arbitrary, damaging and negatively impacts what they do. Attempting to minimalize this issue now from a future perspective doesn't negate how bad it is for the industry in general, especially when it's implementing zero positives.
 
So basically this confirms no used games. I guess a publisher could allow used games if they want, but what publisher would do that if they had the choice? Well maybe for a small (not so small) fee. If they go the fee route, what's the point in a used game. The will be nearly the same price as new.

I get the impression you can have a shared list. A bunch of games you are done with that you are essentially lending out to "family." If you have five "family" members and five shared games each "family" member can play each shared game.

That would actually be a pretty damn neat feature. A silver lining to an otherwise terribly anti-consumer stance.

That doesn't actually say anything new, though. Unless there is a hardware switch that cuts power to the camera and the internet connection then your kinect is always on. It can be turned on via software, remotely, without you knowing if there is no physical switch.

My guess is that Sony will have no online requirement, but will still have the same used games bullshit because its probably being mandated by the big publishers.

Yeah that's what I'm saying. You'll only be able to trade in old games and there will be no market for newer used games so you trade in old games to afford new. Yeah the games are super cheap because they're old and GameStop will give you like $2 for each one, but that's ok! Next gen starts now!
