Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

The only good thing from this mess :

You are in control of when Kinect sensing is On, Off or Paused: If you don’t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command -- “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you’ll need to turn it back on for these experiences.

It's a three month waiting period to trade in new releases. Bringing a bunch of old shit to help you buy new is still going to exist.

The problem though is who is going to buy all those old games. Nobody is going to wait three months for a five dollar discount. So the used games Gamestop is going to sell are going to have to be heavily discounted.

As a truck driver, 24 hour check ins kill the Nextbox for me. My 360 has saved me far to many times during boring times. Not being able to play because I don't have internet consistently? To hell with that.
Just out of curiosity do you have a 360 hooked up in your truck cab/sleeping area, or is it something you do at hotels?

how is anyone going to support a console that its not gooing to have a market in the future?!! think about the N64 market right now, now think about that but with the xbox one (taking into consideration how time and those restriction would affect it)... how can people talk about the "advantages"... i dont even...

Cant wait to watch the video! Get ready GAF!

can't wait for this. Please post the link when its up! Thanks. :)

Wow this thread got massive.

I wrote off XBone a while ago. This just secures that write-off even further.

I'm not going to pretend PS4 won't have some form of DRM, but I don't think it will be as restrictive and draconian as the XBone. A 24 hour check won't be required, but titles from EA, Activision and other non-exclusive titles will require registration. This is why I feel more publishers will go to Sony over the next generation.

They can't Klocker. This is a used game cartel.
Stop touting this belief until you know for a fact Joe Indie Shop can play ball.

but it does not say they could not either, if it turns out to be true, yes I will acknowledge that. I know someone that owns a local mom and pop here and Ill check in with him to see what he finds out in the next week or so.

because otherwise he's about out of business except for handhelds Wii and whatever Sony allows

But yeah, there's no way we're getting through this without sony doing the same exact thing. Seriously, why would microsoft give a shit about used games?

They just want to wet their beak.

Of course he can defend it. To some people like him and myself its not a big fucking deal at all. You going to tell me my email goes back to Redmond too?? LOL

"My situation is perfect and if yours isn't as perfect as mine then it's your situation that's flawed, not the Xbox One."

Bullshit. I hate this argument. Even if you have the mythical perfect situation, others don't. Empathize. Besides, even a hypothetical problem is still worth complaining about.

But yeah, there's no way we're getting through this without sony doing the same exact thing. Seriously, why would microsoft give a shit about used games? They don't as much as publishers do. This is all because the publishers pushed for it, and if anyone thinks that the publishers didn't push on sony to do the exact same thing, they're insane.

"Because Microsoft's doing it, Sony will do it too!".

I'll just repost this here:

Link.

Isn't it how steam started out?

This ventures much much further with 'always-on Kinect', effective used games cartel, forbidding private sales and trading etc (NOTE: physical goods, steam is all-digital)

Also, steam has gotten under much scrutiny and e.g. their refund and return policy is effectively overridden by EU

No rentals is a breaker for me. Hard to imagine what is even possible for them to do to convince me to get on board with buying full-price any new game I want to play.

You can give a game to a friend only if they have been on your friends list for 30 days, and then it is stuck with them.

This is so bizarre and arbitrary.

EDIT: I am at least glad they've finally just come forward and made a very clear, very(if not 100%) comprehensive statement on this stuff. Ball's in your court Sony.

Another shitty point: "We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers"

So that means that I'm at the publisher's mercy to be able to use this system in the first place? So EA says no I'm stuck with the games for good? Is that it?

i wonder if this system is flexible enough for publishers to block any trade-in until after 3 months or whatever, then allow it?

Cant wait to watch the video! Get ready GAF!

Quite excited to hear his Well-Spoken, Articulate and Level-Headed response.

But seriously I can't wait to hear him rip them a new one. His last video looked liked he was on the verge of angry tears of disappointment and rage.

Tell em Joe!!!

The clearer the picture becomes the more sense its starting to make. It might be ruff at first but I think all this bitching and moaning will be looked back stupid and people will wonder how they use to do things the "old way". Sure some people will protest, etc...but that's cause people naturally dislike change.

Everything you described in your post prior is precisely why people are being (justifiably so) resistant to this change. People don't naturally dislike change if it's beneficial for them; they dislike it if it's arbitrary, damaging and negatively impacts what they do. Attempting to minimalize this issue now from a future perspective doesn't negate how bad it is for the industry in general, especially when it's implementing zero positives.

So basically this confirms no used games. I guess a publisher could allow used games if they want, but what publisher would do that if they had the choice? Well maybe for a small (not so small) fee. If they go the fee route, what's the point in a used game. The will be nearly the same price as new.

But if you have 20 discs you can only lend one disc out.

I get the impression you can have a shared list. A bunch of games you are done with that you are essentially lending out to "family." If you have five "family" members and five shared games each "family" member can play each shared game.

That would actually be a pretty damn neat feature. A silver lining to an otherwise terribly anti-consumer stance.

The only good thing from this mess :

That doesn't actually say anything new, though. Unless there is a hardware switch that cuts power to the camera and the internet connection then your kinect is always on. It can be turned on via software, remotely, without you knowing if there is no physical switch.

M$: In order to enjoy your games on Xbox One, the gamer must eat a fresh piece of dog shit. However, we will spread some sugar on the shit and we do NOT charge any fee for this service.

Some people in this thread: Wow, I don't like eating shit; but this is better than expected because of the sugar. Actually it's free; so I'll just eat it...

Seriously guys... really???!!?!!?!

My guess is that Sony will have no online requirement, but will still have the same used games bullshit because its probably being mandated by the big publishers.

Me and my buddy regularly swap games.
Hey you're done with that, let me play it, you can try this.

No more, damn MS

Yeah that's what I'm saying. You'll only be able to trade in old games and there will be no market for newer used games so you trade in old games to afford new. Yeah the games are super cheap because they're old and GameStop will give you like $2 for each one, but that's ok! Next gen starts now!
