Sakurai confirms Smash trailer at E3 direct!

It just occured to me that we're not going to get a 'crowd reaction video' to the trailer. Not that I'd be hoping for a room full of whooping and hollering journalists at a press conference anyway *cough* *cough* but, well, digital hype ain't quite the same...

so, I was wondering how much the 3DS version is going to sell; you guys think it could become a Pokemon-sized phenomenon?

Depending on the quality and if it has CPP support I think so. Hell you could make it a controller in a sense perhaps. We know 3DS hooks up to WiiU we saw it with MH.

It doesn't "need" it. How many people are going to care so much about story mode when most of the playtime is spent on multiplayer matches?

Brawl already did the story mode and look at how that turned out.

Whether or not they go to multiplayer matches depends on the person, there are many people, in many fighting games mind you. That suck at fighting people, so they mess around with in game content.

If there is nothing there , then what.

They have shit to do, they trade it in or give it away.

To the bolded. Do you give up on everything just because you suck at at first, try again get better.

That isn't an excuse not to do story mode, that is an excuse to make a better story mode.

We didn't get it for brawl either.

Have we talked about if characters should be unlocked from the get go?

Part of me wants it. Just recently wanted to play brawl with buds but the Wii we had, had no save. So we were limited until a buddy threw a save onto a SD card.
I've been thinking if anything have characters unlocked but if they do include alternate outfits, have those unlockable instead.

Unlocking characters has been my favourite part about the games. I was disappointed at how easy it was in Brawl if you were playing subspace. Also felt more of the characters should have been secret from the start

Going to sound dickish here but in some circumstances like that TP announcement trailer which in retrospect is pretty barebones and bland the insane crowd reaction is sort of cringe-worthy. The only part of hearing the crowd reaction to Brawl I liked is all the audible "what the fuck"'s at the Snake reveal.

Yeah, Brawl's problem is that it didn't do a story mode right.

Yet people like to think that when something doesn't work in a Nintendo game, that it's a flawed idea and can never work ever. (Kind of like hubs in 3D Mario.)

Yeah I hated how easy it was to unlock all the characters through SSE.

They should do some free DLC code or cheat code (lol) that unlocks all the characters for the serious/competitive guys. Otherwise just lock all the characters.

it has huge potential, that's for sure. Wonder if they'll do the card stuff like for kid icarus.

I concur. This will be so interesting to see. Japan is pretty much a lock I believe, US should be as well

and I second that card idea. I know I'd be getting ALL of them!

The closest thing we'll have is the Nintendo Direct thread and the first Smash announcement thread after.

I fucking hate animes but I must watch this. :lol

Best part of the game.

Id be ok with something like that. Or perhaps a konami code of sorts you could enter every time you boot up the game.

Yeah it can be fun, but like I said in my situation it can kinda be a pain as well. It's a bit of a double edged sword. I like the secrets and going "yeah I finally unlock this guy", but at the same time I don't want to be playing with friends and going "we need to play this stage 7 times so I can get my character.

Man, that's exactly what hype is all about

I mean he barely even has his shoulder barge (vastly prefer how it works in Project M), the rest of his moveset aren't really taken from any of his games and trophy/sticker/music-wise nothing from Land or World is acknowledged at all. It's not like they're my favorite games or anything, but it just strikes me as weird they'd pretend Wario only started existing when Wario Ware was made and it was all the weirder since by the time Brawl came out that sub-series' popularity was already starting to dwindle.

I remember reading something at the time about how Sakurai thought Wario only really stood out with Warioware, but I couldn't find the source anymore, so I might be mistaken. Also, Warioland did have a sticker (Tiny Wario, from the Virtual Boy game, Wario World also had one, a "W" emblem). I think one of his throws animations at least was similar to one of his throws in Wario World.

Anyway, Wario isn't really the only one with an odd sticker selection, the Pokemon stickers are all renders of Brawl's own in game models, with no official art.

Yeah, Brawl's problem is that it didn't do a story mode right.
Agreed. While I liked Adventure Mode more, it was rather random how you'd just be from one universe to another. It doesn't have to be done with tons of cinematics and text, but just something that explains why you'd be going from the different Nintendo worlds, fighting enemies from Mario, Zelda, Kirby, etc.

It would also help if the main villains were actually Master & Crazy Hand instead of winged Tron-esque guy we never heard of.

I'm really curious to see how their going to pull of Smash on the 3DS. Smash has alot of expansive stages with a lot of shit going on and I'm wondering how their going to pull that off on a 3.5" screen.

I'm kinda worried since I have no interest in a Wii U and don't want Sakurai to resort to having to use sprites or some shit on 3DS version because the 3DS can't handle the stages being so large and the characters being so far away from the screen, like in Rayman Origins on the 3DS

I can understand visually (I was glad back in '06 they went with his biker outfit since it stopped some people inevitably assuming he'd be a heavier Mario clone), but there's literally next to nothing besides his bike and Wario Man to go off for a moveset from Ware. Land has all sorts of crazy stuff you can't do with other characters like spring/zombie/vampire/inflated/snowball/flat/etc. Wario, not to mention his regular wrestling-like moves that I'm disappointed Brawl didn't even really attempt. He's still got one of my favorite movesets in Brawl but besides his fart and final smash I'd like to see most of that go to a new Wario rep and his original moveset get heavily retooled to pull more from his older games.

It was all the weirder when a major Land game for the Wii came out not long after Brawl did.

The reaction was more about the art style and the fact that link was older since we had just come off of Wind Waker(The best Zelda game).

Adventure mode should be like Milky way wishes, different planets and stuff is happening on each planet that connects to a larger story.

So now you can have worlds, that fit the theme of each characters, and you can drop people in the background for fanservice

I'd be surprised if Smash 3DS is really much like Smash U at all.

We know it's designed to be complementary, so I don't think there's any pressure on them to make it a "substitute", so to speak.

Oh I know, but nearly ten years later without that context it just comes off as really off-putting to watch, while within context it feels immature that we all (admittedly I felt the same at the time) absolutely needed a mature Zelda.

By comparison Skyward Sword's announcement despite being a way longer wait seemed way more muted despite not having anything as immediately controversial about it unlike 'Celda'.

Hmm, fair enough. I'm not actually oppose to the idea, I just felt that it isn't completely "needed", as Smash Bros can do fine without story. Honestly? I would welcome another attempt at it, they just need to get it right this time.

You know, I'm kind of expecting Bayonetta to be in this, now.

I'm also afraid we might have to say farewell to Ike, and maybe Snake, too. Ike will be replaced with Chrom for sure.

Can't FE have at least three reps by now? It's a long running series and since Melee it's pretty well established overseas as well.

I think Skyward Sword's reveal took a bad route by just showing gameplay footage of basic mechanics, rather than cinematic sequences. I remember the reaction to the trailer was pretty weak overall, before anyone even had touched the game.

Can't say I'd miss Snake. Cool as a joke character that was basically an advertisement for the competitor's biggest game, but probably not someone who needs to stick around.

Give us Bayonetta and whatever awesome stage and awesome music she'll bring with her.

I hope you're right.

Yes they do.

They need some writers.

I dunno whether they should go western and eastern with the writing though. And to not be afraid to let the characters who can talk, talk. Not like link or mario mind you ( even though link has talked before) but fox sonic, fox , cap, pit , palutenia stuff like that. that was one of the things that made story mode SSE awkward, snake, lucario, metanight just silent. Why? Also they go silly with the story .

i feel like brawl can be a complete package,

Awesome story, alternate outfits, buncha characters good online, extra content everything.

And a functioning electronic Nintendo museum.

If we're gonna get Marth, can we at least have Lucina instead?

What other FE characters would we get anyway?

That would be lame. Marth is one of the coolest characters in Smash Bros. and the biggest Fire Emblem character, why would you want to replace him with someone who was only in one game and wasn't even cool?

Chrom.
Lucina fights the same way he does anyway. She probably wouldn't even be a lightweight like Marth.
Also Marth has the dancing blade and shield breaker.

I'd really prefer to get the avatar over Chrom, but I know it isn't very likely. Also, I don't think Lucina will make it before Chrom. The only franchise in Smash which had its secondary characters before the main one was Pokemon, and in that case Pikachu still was the face of the franchise, even if not the "main character" in the games.

Yes they do.

I don't think they need an outside writer. Sakurai by himself handled Kid Icarus Uprising's story pretty well. For SSE, they went out of their way to hire a writer, and the result had to be completely redone anyway, and still ended up mediocre.

The problem with an outside writer is that he likely won't be very knowledgeable about Nintendo's franchises, which might have been one of the reasons SSE didn't use Nintendo locations most of the time.

Then I trust him.

For now at least.

SSE was great for a story driven mode completely devoid of dialogue in a fighting game that had no story mode previously. I do really hope that it improves, but for what it was it was and the method of storytelling it used, it was very enjoyable.

Isn't there a rumor that the 3DS game is going to have more of a focus on story?

I've said I wanted him to be in an actual game in every thread that's had him brought up

Well, everytime I see that action figure. I kept seeing his sword and I had a feeling that I saw it from somewhere. I would like ot guess that it used to be Power Ranger Megazord's sword or something.
