Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

How exactly does the family thing work? Isn't there kind of a loophole there? At least for single player only games, I could create 10 other 'family' members and then let people borrow the passwords for them so they could have access to at least those games?

I'm guessing it's only for Gold members though.

I'm thinking people will find a way around this to make it much more friendly than it appears... 10 in a family? it's like Ms knows it will be used in dorms and frat houses etc...

Only issue is with the 24 hr check can they host MS based game tournaments and such still

The online check is an absolute deal-breaker. MS could reveal they have exclusive rights to every third party game in existence and i still wouldn't give a shit about the Xbone. MS, you disgust me.

That's just an example. Will the Xbone put a game on sale every day, one every week and one every weekend on a regular basis?

No.
You have no idea. Give it 4 days.

...Microsoft has even more Xbox Live announcements up its sleeves. "There are things I can't talk about today," Davidson said, "but we are going to be adding more value to Gold. So in addition to the entertainment you get today, we're going to be adding more value, and we're going to be unveiling that at E3 [Electronic Entertainment Expo]." Could this be something akin to the free games offered by Sony through their PlayStation Plus subscription service? I guess we'll have to wait until E3 to find out.

Do you often lose your Internet more then 24 hours? Or are you concerned about online only games that are connected to the "cloud" going down? First I doubt many people will face who buy X1 outside of deployed military and others in similar situations. Second, well that one I could see being annoying.

When I moved into this apartment it took two weeks to get the internet working. After that, I spent 2-3 months troubleshooting issues where I would yes, lose my connection more than a day. This was on DSL. I then switched to cable. I should note, these two companies are my only two options, despite living in one of the largest cities in north america.

In the year and a half since I've had cable, I've lost my internet for more than a day on three separate occasions, none of which having anything to do with my setup, all external issues with the companies lines.

Also, how about this. I don't have to justify myself to you, or to Microsoft, how I don't like their product because they're treating me like a fucking thief. Maybe I care about how this affects other people than myself. Maybe I care about MS being a possible victim of DDOS or just taking their servers down like they did for MSN music back on Aug 31st 2008. That's not your god damn business nor is it Microsofts. It is no ones place to tell me that I can't do something legitimate with something I legitimately bought because of circumstances outside of my fucking control and if they think they do then they can fuck off and lose out on my business, and the business of everyone whom I can sway on this topic of which i am certain there are many.

It is not fucking 2 motherfucking weeks!

I have had steam in offline mode for about 9 months!

Stop spreading bullshit!

I find it hilarious even the FUD being spread about Steam is still 20x better than what MS is actually doing.

PS4 Won't Need An Internet Connection To Work

Sony confirms the PS4 won't require an internet connection to work.

Published on Feb 21, 2013
Sony’s PS4 is clearly putting its social features into the foreground, but according to a recent comment, it won’t require that you connect to the internet to play games.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that despite its impressive array of online features, the PS4 won’t force players to connect to the internet.

"You can play offline, but you may want to keep it connected,” explained Yoshida.

"The system has the low-power mode - I don't know the official term - that the main system is shut down but the subsystem is awake. Downloading or updating or you can wake it up using either the tablet, smartphone or PS Vita."

Not restricting how players interacting with the PS4 is a surprising turn of events and it’s clear that Sony wants a relatively open system. In fact Yoshida is more than aware that gamers like being anti-social.

"Oh yes, yes, you can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don't want to connect to anyone else, you can do that."

But, considering what the PS4 is doing with its innoavtive new social features, connecting it to the internet is probably a good idea.

Arbitrarily telling me I can't play my games because there's a service outage in my area is fucking outrageous and never justified, and comes off as treating me like a criminal instead of a legitimate consumer. Is digital delivery the future? Absolutely. Is turning your console or device into a fucking BRICK because you lost internet? Fuck that. I refuse.

Exactly. I have heaps of digital games on my 3DS, my PC, my Wii U, and my Vita. Am I required to have an Internet connection play them? NOPE.

True, but benefit is also subjective. While I don't see it this way, some can find benefit in not having to have the disc in (would be nice to just accept an invite and go right to that game without getting up and changing discs etc. I guess), having digital downloads day one so no hassling with stores, preorders etc., maybe something with the shared accounts and so on.

Again, I don't think it's worth it, but some may as everyone has different opinions and priorities.

We already had a system in place where people could choose from digital or physical, with all of those benefits. Now Microsoft has eliminated the choice and made the digital worse.

Kind of agree. They could at least note that it does suck for others. On the other hand, we're talking about a silly, time wasting hobby in video games so why should anyone care about anything other than whether it works for their enjoyment or not?

Brushing it off as "just videogames" is a poor argument. It matters to me. It matters to a lot of other people. It's not fair to tell anyone that it shouldn't matter to us.

I mean, I won't go out of my house and protest this crap, but it's fun to shoot the shit and debate the pros and cons of the system. That's why we're on NeoGAF.

Which version of Steam is it running? That might be the difference.

A year old version of Steam! :lol

But seriously, there's no formal activation period, it's just that Steam's Offline Mode is flaky and has been known to break on occasion, although it's been far better than it was even a year ago.

I hate it. I'm a game collector, i like keeping my games, i only buy used if i have to (ie: out of stock) and i want to know that what I purchased will always work or i'll have avenues of rebuying/fixing down the road

Given this always online, how MS has treated Xbox 1 XBL servers, and now BC with X360 they have implemented a half ass DD only box (without calling it one) with NONE of the benefits of going DD. Going DD works when you know you are trading in some rights (ie: reselling, etc) for some benefit. ie: ease of use, cheaper prices, etc. DD in every other venue wins out because consumers go there naturally. But no console gaming. No instead of developing incentives for going DD they just say "F U we're locking this down".

Are games cheaper? No
Does any of this benefits the consumer? No
Does it address the issue they always complain about (ie: big chain used game resellers?) No they just rewarded them
Will there be competitive "digital" pricing after launch of games? No
Do I have any guarantee that MS would ensure your game library moves with you to the next console? Nope they just killed the last one and said you are backwards for wanting you library (ala LIKE EVERY OTHER DD system) to carry forward.
Oh and here's Kinect that you have to have for no real reason.

Great, thanks. Why does MS think they're expanding their market by creating a camera controlled, Live TV focused, DD/hybrid, broad band required system?

I really hope Sony doesn't do this. I see enough signs to give me hope, but then this Industry rarely rewards hope.

Jesus fucking christ Francis. Why do you even have a Kinect? I didn't buy that shit. Oh look, Microsoft shat out another cynical, nonworking broken piece of shit and I didn't buy it. And it sucks and you hate it WOW

Just throw it out

Can I just say that after all this PRISM NSA stuff, I wouldn't let a Microsoft-created, always-connected, internet and skype pushing, video and audio receiving device into my house?

Ever?

No Xbox One for me. I can handle the all-digital aspect of it, but a 24-hour check-in that renders my console unplayable at some future date is a dealbreaker.

For me too.

I could accept the used game thing (i buy new), but as a collector i can`t accept online checks that turn my 60 buck games into a rentals with an expiration date - when MS shut down the servers all my games would be useless.

Hell no.

I keep having say this, but you know what, Microsoft, EA, Activision and Ubisoft needs to hear this. If I'm buying a physical retail game, I OWN it. I want to be able to play it whenever, wherever I want. I don't want a server telling me what I can and cannot do with a product I bought because 1) I wasn't connected to the internet, or 2) my buddy is playing the game. They are stripping ownership from the consumer. Now I can't even sell my copy of the game in a peer-to-peer transaction because Gamestop, Microsoft and the publisher wants a cut of the action, leaving the consumer out in the cold. This is bs. Nothing here benefits the consumer. It is a scheme to keep the cash flows coming into these big companies. And the problem is, NO ONE, not a single company or publisher is saying this is wrong. Listen, I'm all for digital distribution, but even there, draconian hand holding DRM is unacceptable and inherently anti-consumer.

There are no physical games on Xbox One. You are just paying for a digital license. The physical disc just eliminates the download. After the installation, it's no different than a downloaded copy.

I'm not sure if everyone understands that.

From the Sony conference thread. SCEA employee.

awesome.

Jaffe is posting like mad to me on Twitter. Going too fast.

wow, super disappointed in what i'm seeing from him.

Been a big fan of his games, from twisted metal, to calling all cars and the god of war series.

I think I'm misreading something here. The point says how many people can play the game same time as me? Currently isn't the same? Unless you have multiple copies of the game.

Yes, there is a slight difference.

Discs = Many different people could theoretically play individual different games from your collection (but not the same game obviously) by simply taking a game disc and putting it in their consoles

Family Sharing = Only ONE person can access your selection of games at any given time (excluding yourself) and they can't play the same game as you either

The latter is essentially allowing only two people to access your digital content, as oppose to as many people as you have physical games on your shelf.

Optional. Which means yes for games by EA, Activision or Ubisoft.

I would if that second point wasn't the norm already.

So far. Doesn't mean it will just be them. They are just the big boys who want it the most, and can make it happen.

If for any reason if EA and ATVI together said "have some form of DRM or we may not support" is enough to put fear in either company, Sony most of all as they aren't cash rich. Any console with EA and ATVI as nearly fully exclusive would basically be the next PS2. The common gamer goes where the games are...and both MSFT and Sony know that (Nintendo I'm not sure does yet...).

So if Ea, Ubisoft and Activision are pushing always online, it's fair to assume their games will require it, right? As in, we'll have to be logged in to Origin, Uplay, and/or whatever Activision has going on.

So doesn't that mean Xbone users would have to be logged into Live AND these other networks? And if either of them goes down you'd get bounced out of the game?

On one hand, this should be good for Gamestop because it will kill off a lot of the competition.

On the other hand, how likely is it that any of the big publishers will allow their games to be traded? I don't know, but if I had to guess...

Looks to me like Gamestop's used business could be going down anyway.

Killing sales on Craigslist, eBay, forums, between friends, etc will absolutely benefit GameStop or whoever is on the approved retailer list. If people hated GameStop for the trade in values before, what are they going to be with a monopoly on the market.

I imagine if developers even allow you to sell your (their) game, it will be far after release and maybe right at the release of their next one to drive you to buy it. Wait in line at midnight for the new Madden and get a bonus $5 for your used game!!!

I'm not buying one. It doesn't affect me as much as other people, but I'm not supporting these choices.

I'm sure MS is betting that everyone will forget or be okay with all this as soon as they show off the games. I'm sure it'll work to some degree with all the E3 hype too. :/

Of course they are. Anybody who thinks otherwise is in denial.

From certain publishers, it most certainly will happen. I imagine it will only spread like a virus from there. We are all going to be up shit creek in this regard. Suddenly, the doomed Wii U looks like a shining beacon of hope.

Tell it. Wear it out!

I said this earlier, but I'm guessing they'll make us have a store account and then separate gamertag accounts that are linked to that store account.

That way if someone is violating the live terms of service, they can just ban that gamertag and the person loses that username, achievement history etc., but can make a new tag and access the games on the linked store account.

Just total speculation on my part, but I can't see them block accounts from accessing their games. I know that's how it works now, but that would be a shit storm and surely they've though of a way around that. Be it my speculation or something else.

Trolls would just have an endless number of disposable accounts, not happening

Reasons to like Steam over Xbox One:
1. Go offline mode indefinitely. (yes, really, it's not just a few weeks)
2. Steam has promised to release a 'no online check' patch should Valve ever go out of business.
3. If push comes to shove, PC is still an open platform where you can crack your legally purchased library.
4. Huge sales and key codes from other services like GMG.
5. Competition from other services keeps prices and DRM in check.
6. Your friends can log into your account and play all your games with no restrictions and even in offline mode.
7. Even with the lax DRM and low prices, Gabe is literally swimming in pools of money every night and has little incentive to tighten the noose.

I think I'm misreading something here. The point says how many people can play the game same time as me? Currently isn't the same? Unless you have multiple copies of the game.

By currently, he meant on 360. I have 80-something games on disc at the moment. (a lot more XBLA) which means that in theory I could loan to over 80 people.

I can't say I lose my internet very often. But a while ago, PSN was down for a loooong time. I was still able to play my games.

If the authentication serve goes kaplooey for more than a day, you're kinda screwed here, right?

It doesn't matter how angry people on the internet become, though, the Xbox One is going to be a runaway success. Consumers in general simply do not care enough to educate themselves. EA won worst company of the year two years in a row because people on the internet got into a tizzy. Doesn't stop customers from throwing money at them.

AT&T and Verizon have some of the worst consumer practices in the US, but it doesn't stop the average person from ignoring other quality choices in favor of being bent over.

People continue to use Facebook by the hundreds of millions. That blows me away!

MS knows this, of course they do. People who say they won't buy one because they can't rent games or easily purchase used ones? They know about those people, have taken them into account, and simply do not care about losing that business. It won't stop them from selling a gazillion of these things.

But seriously, there's no formal activation period, it's just that Steam's Offline Mode is flaky and has been known to break on occasion, although it's been far better than it was even a year ago.

I still get "Steam must re-authenticate your Steam Credentials" fairly often on my laptops, which do keep up to date (at least within a few months).

Maybe it is because I also have multiple devices (currently 4) tied to my account? That might be a hidden factor in "timing out" since people could be "sharing"

But yes the offline mode launching games has greatly improved this year. The previous 5 years was butting my head against a wall.

Funny seeing colin moriarty brag about being right about XBONE not being always online, now he's embracing it and flaunting how ps4 will supposedly have it
