Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Fact: Sony have said PS4 doesn't need to be online.

Problem: How can games have DRM if it can't be sure it's online?

Answer: Sony will have versions of online passes.

Online passes...still means I could buy a used PS4 game and play the single player game without ever buying the online pass.

I have the luxury of blazing fast internet that never go down. In my most recent place I have had steady internet for 3 years straight.
Weather wise, I'm fine as I live in Los Angeles.

I can be perfectly content buying a XBone and playing it. hell i may even enjoy it.

However, I WON'T be getting this trojan horse piece of shit.
Why do I want to accept arbitrary restrictions against me based on imagined or assumed sleights for simply being a consumer.

It's out fault developers/publishers are double dipping their profits.

MS knows we don't like this. They goddamn know. They still don't care.

And this is the second thread in as many days that has surpassed the MS E3 hype thread.

Only people with one year subscriptions can access deals?

When did this happen?

Also

•Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

This sounds a little too good to be true. If multiple people can access your games on any Xbox One then as long as a game can be played by more than one person at a time this will be abused beyond belief.

You know damn well multiple people can't play another person's game library at the same time.

PS4 is totally going to have DRM.

Agreed but currently there are NO sales on either machine which means the publishers do have more pressure they can apply there isn't a threat of 30 million current systems BUT If Sony doesn't do it...those guys will SOMEHOW penalize them. You know they will.

If Sony does this as well, then Nintendo will automatically win the 8th console war by default, as people will rush out to buy their Wii U due to what both MS & Sony are doing, while everyone else goes PC only.

Fuck buying digitally when no one seems interested in backwards compatibility. MS, EA, etc. want to turn gaming into a service where you own dick, and as soon as something isn't profitable any more they can just switch it off to force you to buy the next thing.

Comparing to steam & PCs is complete horseshit. My PC games -always- work, sometimes with a bit of work. EA can't magically shut off my copy of Ultima Underworld, and they're probably pissed off about that.

And its remarkable its almost always the juniors that are okay with it, and/or trying to point a finger at Sony. This has to be the biggest shill push I've ever heard of.

I hope the servers crash horrible and they cant be back for 1 week from the release, that should leave the Xbone in an horrible position. I hope the Ps4 doesnt have this kind of shit and have a better price.

I love how people actively want Sony to have the same DRM shit as XBO does....jesus people.

It is very interesting to see how GAF and the market will react if both consoles are employing these practices. Will the consumers speak and boycott? Or are gamers too weak and need their fix?

It will indeed be a very interesting generation.

This PRISM stuff needs to get more attention. Its the end of freedom coming.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/politics/prism-collection-documents/

I mean... hot damn. MS was the first to go along with it? And now they want to put boxes WITH CAMERAS AND MICS in our living rooms? Forget used games people... this is bigger than that, isn't it?

Man step out for a few hours and you miss out!

Can somebody clarify the statement that 10 family members can access and play your game library from your collection? is that simultaneously? While you are playing at the same time on the same game at home?

Can't be?

No, only one person would be permitted per game AFAIK.

Jesus fucking christ Francis. Why do you even have a Kinect? I didn't buy that shit. Oh look, Microsoft shat out another cynical, nonworking broken piece of shit and I didn't buy it. And it sucks and you hate it WOW

Just throw it out

I'm impressed by how much this shit is sturdy. That or Francis is really weak, lol.

Online passes...still means I could buy a used PS4 game and play the single player game without ever buying the online pass.

.

It's not the same thing as always online either. It never blocked you out the entire game ever also the fact that you never have to be online period.

This is absurd. The only possible response to the three items would be "just like the 360". The fact they went out of their way to produce criptic messages show us what they really want.

There's more, i predict that every game will use the "infinite power of the cloud" as a way to be always online.

I haven't read the entire thread yet, but to see that somehow some "journalists" are making fun of us is just beyond...

I can understand die hard fanboys still defending features that give you nothing in return, but journalists calling us out for being mad?

This system is shaping up to be a bad joke, and the worst part of it is that it's probably going to sell well.

I'm looking forward to the PS4, but if they give their "it's up to the publishers on used games" i will call them out as well.

Nobody should be defending bullshit. We should be shocked that the industry is trying to be the first ones to do this, as a poor attempt to improve anemic sales.

Piracy will skyrocket if PS4 does the same regarding used games.

Fact: Sony have said PS4 doesn't need to be online.

Problem: How can games have DRM if it can't be sure it's online?

Answer: Sony will have versions of online passes.

The fact of the matter is that I can take that game to the corners of Alaska and still be able to play it provided that I have electricity, come back the next day and give it to my friend who can keep it or sell it or gift it; these are the privileges I see with current-gen consoles.

With that said, times are changing. PS4 (or Wii U) may be the last consoles that have no bullshit like that.

first, reznor releases a shitty single, then this, then my wife's check engine light comes on in her car (we're barely afloat until my next loan payment comes in)

disappointing day.

The truth is they simply don't want customers without internet.

They want people buying digital games as they get all the money, vs. selling games for whatever price to retailers who sell them marked up to $60.

They want people paying for Xbox Live.

They want people buying/renting movies and shows.

And so on.

It sucks, but really why should they want business from someone with no internet, who primarily buys used games etc.? Hardware gets sold at a loss for a good chunk of a generation, so if someone isn't buying new games or digital content, what do they have to lose by telling that customer to go pound sand?

Just the nature of business. You want to attract the customers who will spend a ton of money with you, and not worry about those who spend little.

Now, this could well backfire as it's definitely pissing off the hardcore gamer crowd who buys a ton of games apiece. So i'm not in anyway defending them. Just saying we can't really expect them to really care about segments of the market with no internet, or the segment that primarily buys used as these are markets they don't get much money from anyway.

It's insane to think that a company would willingly shrink the market to try and make more money. I can't think of a better word than insanity.

Chump change customers add up. Customers change habits. Putting up more walls and barriers to entry is insane.

I'll be fine if Theres just the USUAL bs online passes of EA games and UBI
Im not big on their games anyway but if its a system wide thing lol bye console gaming, i hardly knew ya

No, only one person would be permitted per game AFAIK.

One "family member" per library, actually. But yeah, only one person per game even then.

Restricting used games is up to the publisher on the xbox one is it not? Just like online passes?

Yes but Microsoft's policy of online-DRM fully supports the publishers in their restrictions. Sony's approach can be completely removed from the whole debacle.
And we can still play our games without requiring the internet.

All Sony has to do at this point at their conference is to walk up on stage whisper into the microphone "No DRM" and they've won. They don't even have to show any games.

I pre-order a PS4 on Tuesday assuming they do the following on Monday night

1: no drm
2: under $400
3: show games

pretty simple stuff

Fact: Sony have said PS4 doesn't need to be online.

Problem: How can games have DRM if it can't be sure it's online?

Answer: Sony will have versions of online passes.

I'm totally fucking ok with online passes honestly. Paying a small fee to access the constantly online aspects of a game is cool, because otherwise you're sending traffic to a server owned by a developer who didn't see your money. But you still have access to the offline portions of the game just fine and don't cost the developer any money.

All this Xbone shit though is completely unacceptable.

Yeah ... this is not looking good from my end. I'm a broke university student, so I rent from a family owned company. I feel so sorry for them right now, especially if Sony follows suit.

All of my friends ... play Call of Duty and that's about it. This sharing thing (which still isn't clear) doesn't really benefit me I'd think.

It's still down to the games, but I am that much more hesitant in purchasing a next gen console for sure.

The quotes are extremely clear. You can enjoy the PS4 completely offline, without internet. They thought about online drm, but decided against it because they want to sell PS4 in countries that have garbage internet.
That does seem to be the case, but I'd really like to get a proper article like this Xbox One press release, just outlining everything in plain English.

It does that when you swap devices yeah.

But if I keep the laptops online, it shouldn't know I've swapped on another device. Point being, and I am not alone, that steam offline constantly acts differently. It either A.) Breaks in a patch, B.) Loses credentials, or C.) Won't launch certain games in offline mode (this has improved though).

People having a computer offline for a long time have either an older version of steam that is allowing it, or are extremely lucky it has remained stable since Windows itself can corrupt Steam credentials.

The fact remains, through Steam sales and sales from other digital. shops, I rarely pay more than $20 for a PC game. At that price, its an impulse buy and I don't give a shit if it only holds my attention for 20 minutes. If its a shit game, its a lot easier to swallow the fact I threw away $20 or less than it is $60.00.

games are rarely $20 day one though. And retail 360 games get discounted heavily both day one and later on. While i don't expect xbox digital prices to be as flexible as steam, i do think xbox retail game discounts will go a long way to covering that. And the end result on your console is identical (xbox retail games are basically just steamworks discs)

Don't be ridiculous. I'm all for the used games outrage (even though there are logical reasons behind it), but this Kinect conspiracy is stupid. There's even a link to the privacy outline in the OP.

Sony needs to clarify their stance but the previous statements heavily imply half this shit won't be built into the console and with EA doing away with online passes they would look even worse if they reinstated the policy just for the PS4. We will see soon enough.

Are ALL accounts not essentially family accounts now?

Individual account with the increased power of "THE CLOUD"=$69 a year.
Family account that includes the game share list where you can "share" games with up to 10 family members(can't play same game on more than 1 console for over 1 hour at a time)=$99 a year
ADDED VALUE!

Publishers won't be dumb to ignore half their costumers for childish ego reasons.

It's not childish ego reasons. It's an investment to get a larger consumer base for a console that will ultimately net them more money (theoretically).

But I agree. They won't ignore half their consumers for those long term goals.

You know damn well multiple people can't play another person's game library at the same time.

They do say that the host player can play at any time and that one other person can play at a certain given time. The wording does allow for simultaneous play but someone like Kotaku will have to directly ask Microsoft.

Agreed!

Online passes are awkward, but they're a heck of a lot better solution than this bull crap Microsoft is trying to sell.

You also don't need PERMISSION to do whatever you want with your game.

The real issue however with that IS the 9.99 fee for online if the previous owner used the code RIP. Still DRM but not as extreme as this. I would HONESTLY rather have Sony do this again and keep it like PS3.

I have a reliable internet conection, I don't buy used games, I don't sell my games, but there's no way in hell I'm touching this console. The terms are outrageous and any consumer should be offended. If Sony goes an even remotely similar route I quit console gaming.

You're not getting another dime out of me M$.

-24 hours of offline play: If your internet is down for more than 24 hours get a new provider. My PC is always online and that's where I game the most. You're not taking the xbox out of your house to go camping so what is the problem?

So is my PC but when my internet goes out for longer than a 24hr period I can still play my single player games.
