The Last of Us - Review Thread [Emargo up, scores in OP.]

I think the Polygon review (I only saw the video review) is very good and goes into what really bothers me about these type of games when talking about the violence and sympathy towards video game characters. Plus, a 7.5 is no way a low score.
Problem is the disparity between it and every other review done by their sote. If it were somewhere like Edge or Eurogamer with a reputation for being strict but fair then people wouldn't question the hyper critical points made

It reminds me alot of Half Life 2 so far, in regards to the pacing, story beats, and such.

All of these prerelease positive reviews just make me think that a lot of websites are getting paid well. I am sure it is just an 8/10 game like every other 9-10/10 metacrritic game.

Why should a score be tied to a site's reputation? If a reviewer feels it's a 7.5 and justifies why he/she feels that way, there's no issue. That score is not low anyways, it'd be worse if he or any reviewer felt they had to give a game higher scores to be more in line with other sites. The real issue is the way video games are reviewed and scored in general in the industry.

I work on 3 different sites which presently have perfect scores for TLOU on Metacritic and none of the them have received payment of any kind from Naughty Dog, just an early debug copy.

If any reviewers "got paid" it'd be only the top 2-4 sites on Alexa. Even if so, how do you ignore the 30+ other perfect scores?

This "paid off" stuff is such beeswax.

Come to me, baby... :( I can't wait.

Going down to a different shop Saturday to preorder there as I have some GameCube games and such to trade in towards it and Project X Zone.

Sony's advertising for this game has been pretty damn mediocre too be honest. God of War had more of a presence and thats much more of a known factor.I know the game won't bomb but I get the feeling it won't do nearly as well as it should

Are you kidding? The commercials will be airing in a tour de force fashion now that these reviews have come out like this. This game is destined for 4 million plus.

Is this right?

today there were 2 perfect scores added to metacritic..meaning so far there are 29 10/10's?

Kind of sad to say, but as impressive as that is...GTA IV had 48 perfect 10/10's :/

Anyone here already play the game?

On the TLOU official forum, there's a discussion involving the quality of enemy AI compared to what was seen in the E3 demos. Of course in the forums, there are some who are insisting that the AI has been downgraded, but there is evidence those people may be trolls.

I'm on a gameplay blackout so I can't make comparisons of my own. All I know is we've seen enemies that search for you and work together in other games but the AI shown then was much more that. They communicated, they reacted dynamically to the situation, they had self preservation, they seemed human.

It was thej jawdropping AI that sold me on the game. Considering the Colonial Marines controversy, I doubt ND would show such incredible AI, talk about its Balance of Power AI system, then release an inferior product.

I wondering if those who have played the game could just give some feedback on this, in a non spoilery manner of course.

Alot of reviewers have been actually been BOASTING about the AI in The Last of US.

For example Jim Sterling from Destructoid said...

It should also be noted that the artificial intelligence of the Infected is remarkable. While not exactly careful, Infected actually know enough to not charge at you in a straight line. During one moment, I was actually snuck up on by a monster, who turned and ran when I spotted him. He came back with a friend, and proceeded to dart from doorway to doorway, in an attempt to confuse me. Human enemies aren't quite that tricky, but they do try to outflank you and keep you moving. The Last of Us definitely boasts some of the best A.I. I've ever seen, and I'm very cynical when it comes to A.I. boasts.

I'm just hoping it can clear Uncharted 2's debut month in the US (IIRC, around 540K)

Would be a bigger surprise if it could do better than Uncharted 3's 700K opening month.

But then again, I think something like The Last of Us has more mainstream gamer appeal than Uncharted....zombie apocalypse games just tend to really do well with gamers (see: dead island, left 4 dead, etc).

Of course the PS3 userbase is larger now...this is a good test to see how risky it is for proven developers to make new IP.

I can't decide if I want a physical copy to stay with me in my library forever or redbox it till I finish it.... hnng..... decisions...

I'm on an information blackout regarding this game, so it's kind of hard to read reviews which might be full of spoiler landmines. GAF is risky enough.

I'm still curious though. Is the game heavy on the exploration/resource management? I got a survival horror vibe from the initial trailer (which is basically all I know about the game) but I know better than to expect 'AAA Zombi U'. But I'd still be a bit disappointed if these amazing review scores are primarily based on the merits of the narrative and presentation rather than the gameplay. Reviewers and I tend to disagree when it comes to how much scripting and handholding is acceptable for a '10/10' game.

Either way, I'm still holding out for a PS3 price drop, but I really hope it comes sooner rather than later solely because I want to play this ASAP.

Probably just depends partly on the difficulty level.

You mean we are being lied to? Might as well cancel my preorder if that's what is going on. Thank you for the truthbombs infowarrior.

I'm a few hours in (not a pirate! just know some journos!) and the AI I've encountered seems fine. I forget the specifics of the e3 demo but these guys search, work together and don't want to die.

At this point I do wish I'd started out on Hard not Normal. Take that for what you will.

First E3 demo - Starting @3:40

Extended E3 - Starting @10:00

Basically do the human enemies act as realistically and dynamically as the AI in these demos?

I'm not one to give scores in reviews, but if I did, I'm sure I would rank it higher after taking the time to play in a calm room with high quality headphones.

I'm definitely going to test the hell out of the AI when I get the game. It's one of the main aspects that caught my attention as well.

So many perfect 10s! Mass Effect 2 on 360 had 98 reviews with only one being below a 9, being a 7.5. I remember the internet going nuts over that.

I'm not sure if this is sarcasm
There was like 5 ads during that spike tv thing just now

After seeing the reviews for this now I'm REALLY interested. I was already excited to check it out but let's say the expectations have been raised a bit.

Is the OT going up tonight/tomorrow?

Want to park myself in there and wail until I get the game :D

I won't actually be that annoying.

I hope

Yeap. Could probably swing more people in to buying a PS4 too if undecided. It's a statement game. Sony first party offerings, you want more of this in future, you know where you need to go.

Yeah Im def in this camp.
Game looks so good that I will likely re-buy a PS3 just to play it. Will prob wait a few months as I dont lke gaming in the summer, but once Sep/Oct is here I'll prob be all over this.

If the game ends up being even half as great as everyone is saying it is then it will guarantee that I also pick up a PS4 as well for the sequel.

What about the games that really are a 9-10/10 for you? They would have to be an actual 9-10/10 on Metacritic too. They can't show up as 11-12/10. So how do you differentiate between the real 9-10/10 games and the "just an 8/10" 9-10/10 games?

I take it a lot of people think near-universal acclaim is always paid for... :|

You know. Thinking of yesterday when the reviews got posted, and me clicking on this thread without knowing the scores, was pretty fun.

I saw 10,10,10,10 etc. I was laughing all the way and kind of shaking my head like "sheesh they done it again"

And then some idiot wanted to be known and posted a score of 7.5. It was like a child screaming to get some attention.

Really? Anyone with a minority opinion is just looking for attention? Get your head out of your ass.
