Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

I'm VERY interested to see what happens with the Xbox One. I can't recall a time where a company took as severe a turn toward anti-consumer practices as this. The DRM combined with a head-to-head launch against PS4 could seriously injure the Xbox's sales.

So the big question is: what happens when Sony does the same thing? Where do we turn?

pc or wii U of course...i don't like at the moment the wii u...but if nintendo defends my rights as a customer, then i'm back on their side

You can thank Steam and PC crowd that allow this to happen so many years ago. I was one of the few who hated Steam, the need for authorization, the game that are lock to your account etc. Console is just following PC.

Unlike Steam the savings will not be passed on to the consumer, these fucks want to have their cake and eat it too by cozying up with brick and mortar retailers. I already have a vision of the Australian pricing models for their online store. ($89.95 all of the things)

I haven't paid full retail price for a game on Steam in years. Also Steam has backward and forward compatibility, I don't have to repurchase all my games every time I swap out a videocard.

Something wrong with this thread. I start to read the text but all I see is this:

Lmao.

And being on a PC you don't have to purchase through Steam exclusively.
Also there are no online requirements from Steam, can be offline indefinitely.
Steam also doesn't require a camera and microphone to be hooked up

They only thing I can think of behind this reasoning:

- astronomical development costs
- piracy

A lot of developers died this gen, and more will next-gen.

They had to find a way to make more profit.

At this point, I'm certain Sony will use similar practices (except for the always online )

On the bright side at least Microsoft will let you sell your used game and "gift" the game you don't want even if it just for one time to your friends or family. It's more than what Steam or Blizzard gave me that for sure. I wish I could sell back Diablo 3.

On the dark side all your games will be gone when MS shuts down the servers. Also, you won't be able to use eBay to buy a game that was removed from their digital store due to a publisher going under or a license expiring.

You can use that argument for the camera on your laptop, the microphone on your mobile. That way lies paranoia.

To be fair, the Kinect 2 is waiting for you to say "Xbox on" even when it is in sleep mode. So it is listening all the time. And I probably would be paranoid about a camera that was always waiting for me to wink/wave to turn on.

when they'll be roughly as useful as all the Xbox 1 games I have and never play (that's not true, I played Rallisport Championship 2 for 15 minutes six months ago)

How about less bloom and more story. Writers are cheaper than software

Well since basically all games are now rentals (just like steam) I am still willing to play in their ecosystem as long as they charge rental prices (just like steam.

Odds of this happening are pretty low though.

Also, this entire system only works because of the always online requirement. If ps3 allows you to disconnect for as long as you want, I don't see how they can have such restrictive drm because it would be too easy to get around by pulling the Ethernet cable.

Not when there's spyware / security software that specifically works by taking pictures of whoever's using it, without activating the notification light or alerting the user. If you're going to be paranoid, you should tape over it, as many IT professionals do.

Good, you are an upstanding citizen who buys all your games close to release and never revisits previous consoles.

From all the useless first world consumer wars around the web, console launches are the most entertaining (pun intended) to watch. And these are just electronics inside a box with a brand sticker on top.

Both you and I, have the stability in life to come here and give two thoughts about boxes. Money in our pockets, food on the shelves, water in the tap.

Sad.

But god damn it, I wouldn't trade this freak show for any other.

And once in a while, we are branded with generous, precious gifts such as this sweet strawberry flavored clusterfuck named xbone

Did MS said (Major Nelson in fact) that they was aware from gamer complaint?

Well they had listening very well apparently.

Good, you are an upstanding citizen who buys all your games close to release and never revisits previous consoles.

i.e. a regular person who plays games

Not saying that covers the whole of gamers, but for me, whatever I do or don't buy is probably not going to be tied to the fear that I might not be able to load it up 10 years down the road.

I still got all these Atari games on floppies and no way to play them

Best solution is what Jaffe said I suppose for now.

Lock games for launch and then after 2-3 month used games will work.
That's certainly the best idea I've seen so far. Should increase initial sales and still allow people to sell their game when they have finished with it

No. At least not in Germany.

Is it just me or is the idea that I can step in front of any X1 and it recognizes me and accesses my games incredibly cool? Privacy or not, I love this idea. No more profiles, it just knows me, wherever I am.
It's about 50/50 in Germany with satellite growing and even less cable in the rest of Europe.

What the hell MS, I've supported them since Xbox 1 release but I can't see any clear thinking here. The stupid 24 hour check thing is going to seriously kill their market share!!!

The 24 hour check-in could easily be fixed if you can avoid the 24 hour check IF your disc is in the drive!!!

loan a game to a friend MORE then once!

The rest i can live with and is fine. but I seriously doubt all my friends are going to get the console with some of these restrictions! which means I might not get it either... they are basically removing casual gamers from getting this with the internet requirement. What a stupid strategy, whoever in MS that thought this was a good idea , honestly fucked up royally.

I blame ballmer, he has seemed to get rid of the people that knew what they were doing with games and sent the company in a stupid direction. Bring back J Allard!!!

Ofcourse they are doing better job. They don't have to even post anything.
MS is perfect marketing for Sony.

I already see commercials and ads everywhere:

"You can't lend your game to your friend on Xbox One, PS4 can. Buy PS4."

And that is simplest and best ads that can win over people.

That being said EU does not have gamestop or other centralized gaming shops beside UK. Most of countries used game market is 98% by ebay or other comparable services or simply person to person.

This is megakill for EU market.

it italy we have gamestop

That is true, but consoles and PC do share the same thing, that at one point you need to buy new hardware if you want to play the latest games. You dont repurchase the games on consoles, you buy new games (i know that you're refering to backward compability on PC, but i just wanted to mention that you don repurchase games).

All Sony need to do is abandon the whole forced-DRM concept/check-in and they've won me and a whole load of a gamers over.

I think all this negativity stems from the frustration of losing control over your purchases. If I buy a game from a store, I reckon that the game is now mine indefinitely and I can do whatever I want with it. Sell it, trade it, loan it - it's my property. But Microsoft's model takes that ownership away from me. I can play the game, sure, but I do not own it - Microsoft owns it. If I can't connect to their service ( Xbox Live ) once a day, I lose my privilege of playing the product I thought I owned.

In the end it's not about the inconvenience of it ( most of us have broadband internet connections, for example ); it's about the principle of ownership.

If I buy a game from a service like Steam, I buy it at a heavy discount. Steam enables this - their sales are absolutely incredible. I'm willing to shell out my cash for a license if I don't feel ripped off, and Steam is making me feel respected as a consumer despite the previously mentioned issue of ownership. Microsoft will not have these kinds of sales - I'm certain that they will try to squeeze every cent they can out of my wallet. Fortunately I can keep my wallet away from their hands. They can squeeze air for all I care, really.

I just read the new MS website info from their official stuff.

It's still a hassle, lacks clarity, the licensing stuff is really confusing on which ones work when/how/and in what circumstances, and all of it is opt-in on a per-game basis.

What a fucking joke. It's easier to just not bother with the thing.

There is one thing you have to admitt: ms got balls!
I imagine that anteater posting the policies and looking into the gamer crowd "come at me bro"

I am sure they re sitting in their office and laughing their asses of.
Pointing at the screen and laughing at angry gamer posts knowing "they re going to buy it anyway"
Reading the posts out loud and mocking them with stupid voices.

*At least thats what i would do if i made such a plan and go for it despite the negative publicity.

Gamers who won't get any games aside from Sony 1st party. The industry wants this, they're gonna destroy everyone who doesn't comply. Why do you think EA abandoned Wii U?

There is GameStop in Europe, but they would probably need contracts with bigger electronic chains like Saturn or Media Markt in Germany (and a couple of other countries) for example. But it really sucks for smaller countries all over the world. What about the Estonias or Singapores of the world? They would all need contracts. No way MS is doing that.

I guess the answer then is to only buy XB1 games when they are cheap, just like you are doing with Steam.

loan a game to a friend MORE then once!

You can't "loan" a game to a friend.

It's a single use, permanent transfer of your rights for that game to somebody that has to be on your friends list for at least 30 days. And don't forget, this is a feature that 3rd party publishers have the option to enable, so don't expect to be able to do this with all games.

Gamers who won't get any games aside from Sony 1st party. The industry wants this, they're gonna destroy everyone who doesn't comply. Why do you think EA abandoned Wii U?

People are just as delusional as EA, Ubisoft and Activision if they think they don't NEED Sony.

It's not the other way around.

So basically, if microsoft turns off the servers when Xbox Two is out, then this entire generation of games is wiped out permanently?

This is one of the few healthy concerns I've seen in this thread which makes actual ripples outside this forum.

I think MS would do good by sorting out these types of worries and put out some raging fires.

It would be enough to say "Don't worry, to ensure continuous service in case something goes wrong we will automatically issue updated firmware to ensure no connection required, and in addition we will make sure there is a way for you to download and backup your games locally". Simple as that.

I think they already now could issue this kind of statement without losing anything, rather gaining a whole lot more.

There's nothing being done here that couldn't be accomplished in the past, only now it's more restricted than before. New rules in place with Microsoft handing the keys over to publishers as if they're the good cop.

I loved my 360, but I can't support this.

The one thing I did find interesting is how you can access your games from a friend's system. This sounds neat on paper, but how will it actually wind up in practice? If I have three games I want a friend to check out how long are we going to be sitting around waiting for these massive games to download? Should we run out for some sandwiches and maybe catch a movie?

So selling your xbone with games via ebay is also going to be impossible (if you want to keep the account).
And if someone buys a 2nd hand xbone it will probably be without any games.

People are just as delusional as EA, Ubisoft and Activision if they think they don't NEED Sony.

It's not the other way around.
Yeah, it doesn't work that way. It's like if Hollywood would run theaters. "Would you like to see the real ending of this movie? Pay another 5 bucks."

That's certainly the best idea I've seen so far. Should increase initial sales and still allow people to sell their game when they have finished with it
I didn't mind this idea, until you realise that people who buy the game new and then quickly complete it, or people who buy it and don't like it have to wait 2-3 months before they can sell it. In what other industry are you limited in this fashion? None is the answer. So fuck that.

They have balls, sure. That over-confidence, though, might just bite them back. I seriously hope it does.
