Wait 5 minutes and let them respond naturally to the post themselves, perhaps? This schtick is wearing thin.

I'm not paying for access to basic online play or anything else that puts things I already paid for behind a paywall. I stopped doing it with XBL and I'm not starting up again for PSN.

well, I posted just above him; I have ps3 and ps+.

i mean

at least MS would be able to have dedicated servers and "dat power of the cloud" as a compelling reason to pay for XBL

wtf will be sonys excuse for paying for online?

really hope this isnt true

Thanks there are tons of great games form last generations that I need to play. So it seems these days going backwards will be the best.

You're right. There are hundreds of current/previous gen games and I've never played.
I'd rather replay the SNES catalog then have to ask permission from MS/Sony every day to play new games.

It is but do the hardware sales reflect that? Playstation+ was the beginning, Xbox Live is a huge source of revenue.
It's impossible to say how many Xboxes would have sold if Live was free, or how fewer PS3s would have sold if they charged.

Sony are clearly fine with not charging for it though, so it's just another thing they can boast about.

If online is behind a paywall I'm just going to upgrade my PC and forget about next gen. I don't play enough these days to be buying games and paying subscriptions for when i do occasionally play them.

This information is a bit old and NOTHING new has come. I know Bruce is on the case trying to figure things out as well, but I think there will be an online play paywall. The tiered plan I am hearing will be-

A. Basic online play / cross game chat / streaming. (30 a year)

B. All of A. + PS Plus discounts / games (60 a year)

C. Gaikai Streaming (100 dollars a year)

Numbers were guesses, and this info is from a week AFTER PS Meeting.

Honestly, what were people expecting?
$30 a year is peanuts, that's 2 1/2 dollars per month.......
$60 a year is.... do the math... 5$ per month

i guess you all are entitled to cry about those numbers if you want.

Basic online gaming will stay free. They have zero reason to change that now that they're successful with PS+.

They'll just add more tiers for Gaikai and everything else.

Wouldn't make sense otherwise. We have been told since 2006 that online wouldn't be free, and look where we are today... Online gaming is still free.

Thank you.
To me the most important thing is to have a choice, so if Sony is not requiring DRM system wide i dont care, more i can boycott actively the pubs going for it.
But it will be almost every third party publisher and they will be able to restrict where you can trade these games in at. Its not really gonna be a whole lot different then the used game stance on X1. I do think you wont have to have a 24 hour check in though which is a plus.

I honestly don't see Sony charging for Online-Play, they will probably charge for everything else, but there is no way they will do that

I'm fine with the price -- it's about what I expected. Although I think it would be wise for Sony to just eat the $30 to make it look better.

If basic online gameplay is behind a paywall, that's pretty disgusting, as well as the DRM. I guess we'll see in a few days :\.

I certainly wouldn't be shocked to see them lock a lot of those features behind a paywall, but I'm still not sold online play will be a part of it.

Bloody well hope it's not video sharing etc. PS+ is great value so I'll pay for it, but they should NOT be charging people to just play online. It's such a damn shame Microsoft got away with it, but Sony needs to understand that was only possible because Microsoft's online features had the 1up on Sony's.

I'm not gonna jump the gun on this one, I'll be waiting for official announcements as well.
Don't do that. Jump the gun, make noise, give feedback. Make it so if they are actually doing it they have the feedback that they should reconsider it.

Waiting for info won't make things better in a worst case scenario.

If this were the case but with basic online play free then I'd happily buy the console and pay the $60 a year for the equivalent of PS+, but if online play is behind any sort of paywall then I won't be buying the console, at the very least for a couple of years, possibly never. It's a bit daft really I suppose, seeing as I'd pay for the next tier up, but I think online play should stay free and I won't support a company that charges for it.

I really hope Sony change their minds on this. I worry that MS have done so much to ruin the Xbone that Sony will feel they can get a way with a few dodgy things like this without having to worry too much about the competition.

If anything PS+ makes it more likely that Sony will copy MS's used game policies if not make it worse.

I mean, we're talking about PS+ being a subscription service that gives you full games for free. Why on earth would developers give their games away for free with zero incentive in regards to used games or DRM models?

Are you people serious? $30 a year is dirt cheap. The problem is selling it to possible 360 owners looking to switch. And if it's $100 with unlimited streaming of PS1 and PS2 games, I'm in.

The DRM is depressing though.

I honestly don't see Sony charging for Online-Play, they will probably charge for everything else, but there is no way they will do that

way? ms has been doing it and plenty of people are willing to pay for it. having said that I still think basic online play would be free.

all those fancy share/streaming will be behind pay wall no doubt.

Basic online play is still free AFAIK.

i hope you are korrect.

BTW Folks, please, this is not coming from me - I heard this AFTER Kotaku and Kotaku has been right on this info all along, so please re read the link:

http://kotaku.com/5985356/source-th...d-youll-be-able-to-control-it-with-your-phone

and I hope I am wrong, and I do apologize if I'm ruffling any feathers, I don't mean to cause trouble.

nah,you are a good "insider" just say you are not sure when you are not sure....

My speculation: Between the F2P games, PS3 and PSV online play being free, I don't think they will make it behind a paywall.

On the other hand, they will lock everything else behind a pay way even cross game chat, picture and video capture/uploads to get people to sign up to the lowest tier at least.

It doesn't make a financial sense to lock basic online gaming behind a paywall which will lock all the F2P games unless they put them under an exemption of some sort which will undermine their online paywall policy.

Edit: Oh and:

Basic online play is still free AFAIK.

Microsoft introduced paying for online play, most people didn't have a problem with it. It worked well for Microsoft, rightfully. If anyone here has ever paid for Xbox Live, they are part of the problem. Previous 360 online gamers should have no problem paying for online play. It shafts the rest of us who hate it though. But in the end, the people willing to pay for it create a bigger amount of revenue than those that don't. Its too late for us to complain :(

I however always have, and do still have, a problem with paying for online. I will take the same approach I took with my 360. I simply will not play online.

Welp that's that I guess.

Because they get a cut of the subscription fee based on downloads via PS+.

But please don't spout hyperbolic nonsense. What Microsoft is doing is anti consumer value stripping trash. PS+ is by contrast the best value proposition gamers have had this entire generation.

hopefully the plans have changed, they really need to go for microsoft's throat right now. playstation live gold would kill so much momentum.

I've said this before, this is all stuff that can be modified at the last second. If people feel strongly about it, I encourage you to let your voices be heard. I am just trying to add credibility to someone else btw- Kotaku had posted this way before anyone else, and for the most part they have been nearly 100% on everything.

BTW this was all before the PS press conference, and the same poster leaked the DS4. So this info is mostly legit too.

Did you really just post 3 month old rumors before this DRM nonsense went down .
Thought your info was more up to date .
