MS Cancels 1 on 1 Interviews with GB, GI.biz, Tapezilla...MCV?: "Scheduling conflict"

So if it wasn't for Giant Bomb etc, then all those nines of millions of people wouldn't even know the XBone existed? I think you seriously overestimate the reach of gaming publications.

Oh, it's already a colossal failure. All that remains is to see how many people buy it anyway.

I didn't say it was a colossal failure already, I was chafing at the idea that "selling millions" was a big deal. If we look back in 2025 and this thing sold 20 million units, it would be a disaster for MS.

TechnoBuffalo: "As it stands right now, Microsoft is not taking our requests for an appointment at E3. Even further, fellow game writers have said the Microsoft is cancelling their already arranged appointments."

I know, you just meant that success is relative to budget and expectations, see also S-E crying over 6.5 million while Atlus throws a party for 200k. I was calling it a colossal failure already because, well, that's what it is going to be.

I hope you're right. I hope that any other console that goes through with these or similar policies is also a failure. The only way to stop it is to not buy it, and to convince others to not buy it.

I could probably convince a few people not to throw their money away chasing status, but, well, is anyone taking bets on which celebrity or celebrities will, in five months' time, be tweeting about how excited they are for exclusive Call of Duty DLC on the XBone?

And even if the XBone doesn't sell, it doesn't mean these policies will go away. EA will probably say it failed because it wasn't reactionary enough.

"Dear Polygon,

We are sorry that we weren't able to make the appointment for your interview due to a
scheduling conflict', so here is a Fax of the questions we are sure you would have asked plus the answers we would have given you. Please be sure to mention how sincere our representative sounded ,and if you need extra flavor you can say he was wearing Jeans and a collared shirt, but with a Blazer over top to appear fun AND professional.

Sincerely,
Microsoft
XOXOXOXOXO"

It's amazing how quickly polygon is becoming the butt of all jokes.

Well deserved anyways.

lol simple. they are trying to escape negative questions about their system. i believe MS is trying to let all the negative things about the xbox one out right now before E3 and try to impress the media with their exclusive big games at E3. by time they think people will start to adapt these facts about the system and 6 months from now, it will be something we are used to.

i honestly think they are wrong. it will hurt them badly.

but LOL @ the lie " scheduling conflict", go eat shit man. i am surprised why you are not fired yet..

If Sony were to go all the way with DRM in the same way Microsoft is then it IS possible... but it seems more likely Sony would just stick with RFID stuff, and honestly that IS vastly preferable to this, so I think it's simply going to blow up in their face period so long as a lot of people hear AND they're not just all apathetic as hell.

I'd worry about people who aren't online and don't hear this, but I guess they'll just find out in store or take it back immediately afterwards!

Its pretty entertaining to see Microsoft going down.

I don't really care about them anymore as their game philosophy is getting very disgusting in recent years. All they care are mainstream sales with annual sequels of Call of Duty, Halo, Forza and more Kinects. And now they even banded with the mega publishers to do awful things to consumers.

I miss the old Microsoft, especially the one around 2006 when they tried their hardest with new exclusive IP (1st or 3rd party) like Lost Planet, Gears, Dead Rising, Blue Dragon, Shadow Complex, Mass Effect etc.

Now? Just sick. And they still charge people to play online when the other 2 console makers are free or with much better system (PS+).

I was so supremely upset when I first heard about all the DRM shit. Now all this shit backfiring in their faces brings a huge smile to my face. I want this to be the biggest blunder in Consumer Electronics history. Hopefully I'll still be able to buy normal games with the PS4. I'm almost sure of it. Even if Sony had plans to do something similar, no doubt they'd make more money now with no DRM from all the crossover from fed up gamers.

No amount of PR, or canceling prearranged interviews and events is going to make up for this. Say goodbye to the hundred+ million you likely spent developing this DRM bullshit, or say goodbye to your foothold in the console pie.

It's just blunder after blunder after blunder.

So every executive interview was cancelled due to "scheduling conflicts"?

lol at 'scheduling conflicts'. hahaha.

it's like that scene in TDKR with gordon in the hospital wanting to send all the cops into the tunnels.
"we can't send every cop into those tunnels! people will get suspicious!"
JGL: "so..... 'training exercise', then?"

my gawd, someone needs to make a .gif.

Are there any detailed rumors as to how this would work exactly?
Looking at Skylanders gives you a good idea of what to expect I'd think. But beyond whatever you can dig out of the patent filling, no, there hasn't been any concrete details on how it'd have worked.

Man oh man. Watching the blatantly obvious marketers on GAF, and in this thread in particular, get the ban pipe is amusing as fuck.

I don't know how people still have respect for GiantBomb after everything that's happened since May 21'st though. They have been amazingly soft and forgiving and apologetic to MS the last few weeks, and seemed like they were trying to ignore the NoDRM movement when even major mainstream publications were writing about it. Writing off Neogaf as nothing more than Sony fanboys and shit. Even Polygon (MOTHER FUCKING POLYGON) is starting to give MS a piece of their mind lately... yeah, Polygon has more journalistic integrity than GiantBomb right now. God damn.

What I'm trying to say is; GiantBomb can EAD. And I mean that from the heart.

Whoever their marketing department hires to talk about it?

Let's be honest, if all the gaming sites got together and refused to cover the X-Bone, if the entire internet conspired to pretend it didn't exist...

... it would still sell millions of units.
No it wouldn't

Sure GiantBomb is funny but they have no clue what the hell they are talking about on anything.

Guys, I'm pretty sure Microsoft has the best intentions. Canceling these interviews will benefit the journalists AND gamers.

Giant Bomb will probably come with a spin this weekend.

I don't know, Jeff was taking a shitload of shots at MS during their Marvel Heroes let's play. Every joke was a "one time use only" or "preferred partner" joke. Then was ribbing with everyone that they should be careful or MS won't give them an interview.

keeping a close eye on this, all the backlash in the world will not mean shit if everyone ends up buying a shit load of Xbox Ones this holiday only then will we know if all this backlash had any real impact to change the course of console DRM

no one is getting an interview.

Right and that's why Jeff was being sarcastic about not getting interviews. Like as an example, Ryan was playing MH and was confused about some gameplay mechanic and made a joke "one time use" and Jeff was like "Whoa, better watch out, or MS will cancel your interview!"

werent they giving MS shit in that recent vid? patrick and vinny didnt like the drm at all.jeff and ryan also seemed that way.

Heh, that video did not impress me in the least. Seems sort of "oh shit we kind of dropped the ball covering or caring about the consumer concerns about the impact of the DRM of XB1, lets save face and pretend to be concerned in this video".

Even the cancellations of the meetings still did not clue Jeff in that something might be afoot as he is boiling it down to a regular occurrences while it is clear MS is saying fuck all, we are intentionally limiting talking about any of this as much as possible. Everyone started picking up on how fucking shady it all is, meanwhile someone from GiantBomb is again making excuses.

By one interview, I meant the post-conference one, but yes, with several outlets. Ok, so Sony blacklisted a site and there was a shake up. Now every site is gonna fire people because Microsoft just blanket canceled a ton of interviews? And so now it's gonna change nothing, where before it was gonna "kill any outlet they want." Got it.

It doesn't need to sell millions, it needs to sell 10s of millions and to do that, yes, you need more than Polygon, IGN, and Game Informer.

Doesn't Matter
TV (Nickelodeon) will not shun advertisements deals or promotion bucs.

The impact would only materialize when kids discover that the One isn't cool/best value for their dollar.

Microsofts whole business and marketing plan for xbone seems to be "let's wing it in the last minute and hope for the best".

Microsoft arrogance is unlike any other.

They will sooner destroy the industry and claim "victory" than accept a loss.

Console crash incoming?

That must have been one hell of a scheduling conflict, I'd have more respect for MS if they were just honest about what they are doing and way.

Pologon got ditched too?, so we pretty much know the excuse is utter shit now. One two three four even five conflicts but pretty much every one getting ditched now its pretty clear they are making the excuse up.

Publishers and manufacturers cherry picking who they talk to and what they talk about is not unusual.

Nah, Polygon is just coming to the conclusion why the interviews were canceled.

It's very obvious what's going on after they published the articles on licensing, privacy etc.

Microsoft wants to put all that behind them and talk only about games at E3.

Journalists, on the other hand, will primarily want to talk about those policies.

So to avoid outlets cluttering up their Xbox One coverage with fresh policy talk, they're cutting out contact with journalists altogether.

All that'll be left on these outlets is the carefully crafted pr from their conference and booth bots who can't answer policy questions. That is, if the outlets choose to play along with this strategy.

It's very, very clear after those articles' publications. Don't offer press a right of reply, put the head down, focus on games, and hope the policy talk peters out.

While that does make sense, I really hope people don't forget about the policies in the long run

MS are not the first to backpedal and cancel some interviews.

MS has bad PR and does damage control. We see this all the time.

Not sure if I've ever seen a systematic mass cancellation of PR sessions like *this* though. I mean this is this industry's show. Correct me if I'm wrong though. It just doesn't seem like the standard tweaking of PR that goes on, it's more than that.
