Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

No company has released a repackaged 360 version with multiple games on one disc. I bet it will be three discs (maybe on a spindle like Lost Odyssey).

NCS claims it's 3 Discs in their preorder:

" Reservations are welcome for Qute's upcoming Ginga Force & Eschatos Wonder Pack which includes three discs as follows:

» Ginga Force DVD
» Eschatos DVD
» Ginga Force & Eschatos Best Selection Soundtrack CD (14 tracks)"

Also was the Cave DDP:DFK double pack 2 discs? I could imagine this was a 2 disc down to 1 reissue. The one here:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%B1%E3%82%A4%E3%83%96-%E6%80%92%E9%A6%96%E9%A0%98%E8%9C%82%E5%A4%A7%E5%BE%A9%E6%B4%BB%E3%83%80%E3%83%96%E3%83%AB%E3%83%91%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF/dp/B007JR9MAQ/ref=sr_1_5?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1370757089&sr=1-5&keywords=dodonpachi

I don't think that it's "most", no.

Well, the facts say otherwise. The majority are region free or have a localization. See below (all retail or GOD releases).

Region Free:
Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5
Muchi Muchi Pork!/Pink Sweets
Espgaluda II
Dodonpachi Saidaioujou
Eschatos
Bullet Soul
Ginga Force
Shooting Love (DeltaZeal)

Localizations:
Akai Katana
Raiden Fighters Aces
Raiden IV
Dodonpachi Resurrection
Deathsmiles
Deathsmiles II (GOD version, North America)
Otomedius Excellent

VERSUS

Japan-Only:
Mamoru-kun ga norowareteshimatta
Shooting Love (Trizeal)
Caladrius
Ketsui
Dodonpachi Daioujou
Mushihimesama HD
Otomedius Gorgeous
Shikigami no Shiro III
Radirgy Noah
Strike Witches
Under Defeat HD

So 15 Region-free/Localized versus 11 Japan-Only. (I don't include quasi-shmups like Senko no Ronde, even though one of those was localized as well.) Among the 11 Japan-only titles, 7 are available for another platform that is either region free or has had a localization outside of Japan, which helps explain their non-region-free status on the X360.

I'd be curious to know about the Daifukatsu double pack. I suspect it is likely two seperate discs as well.

You shouldn't have to do that in order to play an import game, that's ridiculous.

About as ridiculous as expecting to be able to import and play freely a piece of software designed for and marketed to a certain country/region.

so, a friend put me onto more physical releases for 360, wanted to know how:

  • Dondonpachi Ressurection
  • Espgaluda II
  • Akai Katana

were, as well as where to get them on the cheap!

Esp II is really good. CDJapan has the Platinum reissue for $28:

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=K2F-4

I'd go far beyond that. Almost ALL consoles have been region-locked. PS3 is truly the aberration. That does not make it right, but that is how it has been and certainly gamers have gotten around it. With the always-online and constant connectivity of modern systems it will just get worse.

Uggghhhh...I can see it now. You've been playing offline and it's time for your 24 hour check-in, a message pops up on screen......

"Dear Xbone user. We have determined that the following title: 'Dodonpachi DaiFuSaidaiokou-jou' is not licensed for your region. As this is a violation of the Xbone TOS we have deleted your achievements for the game, delicensed it from your console, and banned your XBL gamertag. Please consider your actions more thoughtfully in the future or we will turn over all video/audio collected via Kinect to govt. surveillance organizations."

MS3 is definitely doable, but I had the Xbox port which pretty much forced you to memorize the levels to see the whole game (continues would send you back the the beginning of a level in that version).
That port upset me so badly. I could clear the game on home cart, but the Xbox version just ruined it with the fubar continue system. Such a shame as it looked beautiful and ran wonderfully.

While I would love for the 360 to be fully region-free, I don't like the suggestion that I'm getting abused/tricked by buying the games that I want to play and whatever I need to play them. I knew exactly what the terms for playing Ketsui back in 2010 were and decided they were fine.

Both money and these games are going to have different values for everyone.

Ummm...isn't DeltaZeal Region Free? Otherwise I agree that it's sad that titles like Mushihime HD got locked for no logical reason other than to screw fans.

I found his comment rather pithy as well.

Oh I almost forgot, I got my copy of Sturmwind for Dreamcast yesterday.

Great game, though I need to practice a bit more to get further because Arcade mode rapes me. ;_;

Definitely worth checking out for any shmup enthusiasts.

It's so good!

Here is STGWeekly's episode covering G-Stream G2020 (ΔZEAL):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUpmG6gIhVo

Like XIIZEAL, ΔZEAL got lots of bug fixes for this compilation.

Thanks for posting that. Nice to finally see some decent footage. Every trailer I saw was either tiny, or only demoed a few seconds of footage. Along with the complete lack of decently sized, viewable screens I'd been holding off on this. Looks quite a bit like a budget Raiden Fighters; but given that this is basically the work of one guy AND he was cool enough to region free the release I'm ordering a couple copies now.

SHIT YEAH

*checks shipping*

lowest one is $33.48...SHIT NO damn guess ill check playasia or hope ebay/amazon gets a deal sometime

Yeah CDJ does suck at shipping prices. Worth it if you're grabbing some other stuff at the same time perhaps. Dig around, ebay is probably a good idea. Amazon japan has it too if you have someone to send it to for forwarding.

It is really an exceptional title. The graphics are a little low-key but the title certainly holds its own against the same-day SDOJ release.

When I said that I was thinking of retail games, not downloads, so I wouldn't count the XBLA stuff. So going by the numbers above, of disc games, 12 are playable on US systems, 14 not (though 2 of those 14 are available for download, you can't use the actual discs). So yeah, it's closer than I thought.

In other news, it took forever, but my copy of Sturmwind finally arrived today! I played through a few levels. Pretty good game.

Yes. All retail re-issues ("Best"/"Platinum Hits", etc) of original region-free X360 shmups are region-free as well.
Which one is it that's the 360 game where one release is region-locked, and the other release is region-free... limited edition is locked, regular not, or something.

About as ridiculous as expecting to be able to import and play freely a piece of software designed for and marketed to a certain country/region.
Uh, what? 360s are 360s. Why should it matter where the game is from? Region locking may be common, but it's ridiculous and should not exist.

Espgaluga II Limited Edition is region-locked while the Standard and Platinum are region-free.

And, going by retail-only discs there are 15 localised or region-free and 13 that are Japan-locked.

Region-locking is a business decision. It for the most part exists because different publishers and distributors have different aims and needs for a title in different territories. Deathsmiles can sell for $60 in Japan whereas it launches as a budget title in the US. Some of these region-locked shmups eventually never found distribution in other territories and, therefore, remain locked. It is neither ridiculous nor not ridiculous. Sucks for fans and consumers but it is not our choice. I'm pretty damn sure Cave hoped to get Mushi HD sold to a foreign publisher. Clearly never happened so it remains locked. Not too surprising they unlocked SDOJ.

RE: Shikigami no Shiro, I remember the NA publisher saying MS wouldn't let them bring the X360 version over for whatever reason, hence the Wii release.

I don't dispute the quality of the games, just the disrespect MS has for its system's owners. I wish the PS3 embraced shmups more.

i agree. japanese console for japanese games. this makes sense.
anyway, i have waited long for cave shmups on ps3, then i gave up and bought an xbox.

That's basically it in an nutshell. The region lock. It's absurd to have to buy a second system to play games you own.

once again i agree. after reading that RSG will not release any other cave shmup in the future i've bought a JAP xbox. so now i own 2 xbox. and all this because of the stupid region locking.

I'd go far beyond that. Almost ALL consoles have been region-locked. PS3 is truly the aberration.

i like how xbox fans justify their beloved microsoft even going as far to justify region locking. so now ps3 is the aberration because is 99% region free?

!!
And, I've really got no issues what MS is doing with the XB1.

About as ridiculous as expecting to be able to import and play freely a piece of software designed for and marketed to a certain country/region.

import console for import games

idk makes sense to me

microsoft fans are... funny. what else to say?

Come on, now. Shooter fans don't give a damn which system it is on. If they went to the Wii we would be saying the same thing. I know GAF has gotten a bit crazy now (and it is good to put up the good fight for some of the evolving issues) but we are talking current gen which has been going on for 7-8 years.

I really don't care what system it's on either. Hell, I bought a Wii for Castle Shikigami 3, so region lock won't hold me back if I love the game. :P Fortunately I'm not too huge on Cave shmups(blasphemy, I know). Though I've always wanted Milestone Collection 2 for Radirgy 2. :(

oh shit, there was a 2? i just got into 1!

Yep. It never got localized, sadly. Hell, it's a miracle Radirgy 1 was.

And yes, it deserves one. 'lol story in shmups' aside, Radirgy has a lot of boss dialogue and amusing commentary from the megane girl.

Radirgy 2 added co-op.

Radirgy-Noa-Massive-2-player-2.jpg

Two games that are sequels I wish could get brought over are Radirgy 2 and Senko no Ronde DUO. Sad thing is Neither really got much of a shot. The "ultimate shooting collection" and "wartech" didn't really do to much over here. Sad because from what everyone has said here these sequels REALLY grew their product in the sequels. Especially DUO. Its a tourney game over seas.

!!

The most I did was to clip the internal plugs on my N64. I can't imaging cutting an actual cartridge.

I've actually done this...

...to a Super NES Game Genie cartridge that I found for cheap, for the soul purpose of playing imported Super Famicom games. :)

For fans of the Thunder Force series the original version of TFII is a must-see/must-play. More levels and superior audio-visuals than the MD/Genesis port.

Also worthy of note is Capcom's Carrier Air Wing, the arcade-only follow-up to Area 88 / UN Squadron.

damn...CJ's picks make me really want to hunt this one down, at least the Wii's cracked wide open

Yeah, there are versions for both X360 (JP-only, region-locked) and Wii (JP-only, part of Milestone Shooting Collection 2).

eh, ebay prices dont seem too bad....

I'm not sorry.

haha well done, i just get lazy & put triforces or green lantern symbols most times, that came out cool!

Shooting Love 10th Anniversary can be played in tate right? I thought I heard the first shooting love didn't have tate...probably wrong on that.

Think I'm gonna pick it up since I got another PA coupon.

Full tate for both games on Shooting Love 10th, with granular scaling to make it fit your display. Two different filtering options.

went on a PCB after I attended the Chicago Shmups meet. never owned a PCB before, but I bought a supergun, pcb feet, neo-geo arcade stick, composite cables, and great mahou daisakusen (dimahoo), armed police batrider - korean b version, and a cps2 conversion of progear no arashi.

pretty excited to get some arcade game going in my apartment :). I was extremely addicted to dimahoo and progear at the shmupsmeet.
