With all this doom and gloom from the Xbox, is it reasonable to expect some doom and gloom to come from PS4 at some point?
only if based Cerny is not on the conference

My personal guess is PS4 will also have some kind of DRM scheme but it won't be as restrictive as MS's. Specifically the 24 hour check part. With all this doom and gloom from the Xbox, is it reasonable to expect some doom and gloom to come from PS4 at some point?
Everyone's favorite Polygon employee said on Rebel FM this week that he has also heard the downclocking rumors from a source. According to him the reason was actually the longevity of the product. At the original projected clockspeed they were projecting an Xbox One would last for 3 years before the hardware fails, on average. Reducing the clock speed would supposedly increase that to 5 years.

If Sony takes this golden opportunity and fucks it up I will be far, far more disappointed in them. I expect this type of BS from microsoft (not necessarily from the xbox division, but from MS corporate). I expect better of Sony. So that, to me, will be a HUGE letdown.
To me MS and Sony are both in the famous prisoner's dilemma. Except in this scenario Sony knows how MS acts so they can win big.
If they go the same way as MS they will get so much (deserved) shit, it will be unprecedented.

Everyone's favorite Polygon employee hardly has any knowledge about hardware (SimCity DRM fiasco "complex calculations etc")
Which he seems to be extremely good at...You don't need hardware knowledge to regurgitate what somebody else has told you.

EA puts out almost nothing but garbage anyway. If a publisher wants to be a dick that's fine, I just don't want the entire system to be a dick.Simply a lot of games will use connection to servers and will cover it up as "complex calculations". I think console won't have any timer but some bublishers like Blizz or EA will req connection to play.
That being said it is far from always online since you can just not buy those games.
Absolute 100% truth. To me MS and Sony are both in the famous prisoner's dilemma. Except in this scenario Sony knows how MS acts so they can win big.

I was *this* close to picking up Crysis 3 for PC during Gamefly's sale but then I read this on the product page: This title requires EA Origin and a permanent internet connection to play.EA puts out almost nothing but garbage anyway. So I bailed out. Full stop. If they want to go this direction I will gladly avoid their games. There is no discount good enough to make up for always-online.

I hope that RUMOR tag stays there next to "downclocking GPU."
They can have all the ESRAM issues they want, so long as their engineers do their job and solve the issue without compromising the originally planned specs. I'm an easy guy to please when it comes to video games. I haven't been upset or phased by any of the policies or features Microsoft has revealed with XB1... but downclocking the GPU would break my hype for this system. As long as it still says "rumour" there I can be happy.
Its clearly written: http://www.gamefly.com/Download-Crysis-3/5005415/Crysis 3 doesnt require a permanent connection. Its a one time connect-activate title. And Origin works quite decently offline.

So they have the details wrong here?
3 years? 5 years? That's outstandingly bad for a consumer product for a living room. Did they put the Vista team in charge of this?
Bang on. This was a text book example of Prisoner's Dilemma and Microsoft blew it by letting their cat out of the bag first.
That's actually an interesting viewpoint, it also makes sense but not on every level.
What if MS was comparing their games sales with the number of achievements people get from these particular games too. What if they just found out that, let's just say Halo 3, has sold 8 mio. copies but 16 mio. different accounts got achievements from that game?
Well, from an developer standpoint I would ask myself "why the hell didn’t we sell more units of our game, when there are clearly so many more people interested in our product?" "We lost 8 mio. sales goddamn!"
So, in the end you have a product that has the potential to sell 16 mio. units, but because of resales you just get the half of it.
If I were the developer I would try anything to at least take piece of the cake that is these additional 8 mio. sales.
They had to. The shitstorm created by some vague rumours (edge, orth, et al) when full on hurricane once Harrison opened his mouth post reveal. Now, at least those who are still on board will be able to see the games on display at e3, and be able to discuss them with less trouble.
It will be fascinating to see what sony does. They have to give the big three something wrt used games, they just have to.
If I was making the decision, I would go with an optional 60 day moratorium on used game sales and rentals for new releases that publishers could choose to use for their games. After the 60 days, the ps4 game would be like any ps3 game. That is, the owner would own it 100%, could sell it to whoever, lend it, etc. And companies like redbox could then rent it etc.
I think that would be enough for the big pubs to not ditch Sony, and I think it would be just enough to prevent a full on Xbone for the Ps4.
Not to mention it would be a very strange reason to downclock a system (from a business standpoint). Make your system weaker overall to avoid something that won't bite you until your installed base is established.
The RROD thing cost Microsoft real money.
The RROD thing cost Microsoft real money.
It cost them a lot sure, but did they not also sell many additional consoles because of it? No idea if the extra sales made up the difference for the warranty costs etc though.

I would like to know who approached who...
Was it MS going to the publishers and offering to add DRM to games
Or
The publishers asking the console makers to add DRM to the consoles.
if the latter, why didn't Nintendo add it to th Wii U?

Most of my friends are holding out on buying Xbones because it's technically inferior. They don't even care or know about the DRM stuff.
It actually surprised me. One would think it was the other way around.
