TRUTHFACT: MS having eSRAM yield problems on Xbox One

With all this doom and gloom from the Xbox, is it reasonable to expect some doom and gloom to come from PS4 at some point?

depends on what sony does, obviously.

If they come out at E3 with similar policies to microsoft, then flood social media with shills to defend toxic, anti-consumer policies then YES, sony will absolutely get totally and completely shit on as they did when $599! and "just get two jobs!" happened.

All indications are that Sony's approach is different (an offline console has been confirmed, for starters) so we'll just have to see.

If Sony takes this golden opportunity and fucks it up I will be far, far more disappointed in them. I expect this type of BS from microsoft (not necessarily from the xbox division, but from MS corporate). I expect better of Sony. So that, to me, will be a HUGE letdown.

Everyone's favorite Polygon employee said on Rebel FM this week that he has also heard the downclocking rumors from a source. According to him the reason was actually the longevity of the product. At the original projected clockspeed they were projecting an Xbox One would last for 3 years before the hardware fails, on average. Reducing the clock speed would supposedly increase that to 5 years.

Everyone's favorite Polygon employee hardly has any knowledge about hardware (SimCity DRM fiasco "complex calculations etc")

My personal guess is PS4 will also have some kind of DRM scheme but it won't be as restrictive as MS's. Specifically the 24 hour check part.

Simply a lot of games will use connection to servers and will cover it up as "complex calculations". I think console won't have any timer but some bublishers like Blizz or EA will req connection to play.
That being said it is far from always online since you can just not buy those games.

To me MS and Sony are both in the famous prisoner's dilemma. Except in this scenario Sony knows how MS acts so they can win big.

If they go the same way as MS they will get so much (deserved) shit, it will be unprecedented.

I hope that RUMOR tag stays there next to "downclocking GPU."

They can have all the ESRAM issues they want, so long as their engineers do their job and solve the issue without compromising the originally planned specs. I'm an easy guy to please when it comes to video games. I haven't been upset or phased by any of the policies or features Microsoft has revealed with XB1... but downclocking the GPU would break my hype for this system. As long as it still says "rumour" there I can be happy.

EA puts out almost nothing but garbage anyway. If a publisher wants to be a dick that's fine, I just don't want the entire system to be a dick.

Absolute 100% truth.

I was *this* close to picking up Crysis 3 for PC during Gamefly's sale but then I read this on the product page: This title requires EA Origin and a permanent internet connection to play.

So I bailed out. Full stop. If they want to go this direction I will gladly avoid their games. There is no discount good enough to make up for always-online.

Bang on. This was a text book example of Prisoner's Dilemma and Microsoft blew it by letting their cat out of the bag first.

Crysis 3 doesnt require a permanent connection. Its a one time connect-activate title. And Origin works quite decently offline.

Rock Band
Mass Effect
Crysis
Skate
Fight Night
Burnout
Mirrors Edge
Dead Space
Dragon Age
Battlefield
SSX

I've had some fantastic times from titles EA have put out this generation, their politics i don't agree with but i don't think anyone could say they haven't put out some great games and will continue to do so.

You do realize that even with the original specs the Xbox One is already significantly slower than the PS4?

So true, nice to see a bit of Game Theory in the discussion.

It's a different situation. The real question is where Sony's priorities lie: with publishers or with their customers. If they chose the customers' side, publishers might chose to go with MS so they can put a stop to renting games and get a cut from used games sales. If Sony follows Microsoft's example, they won't lose any exclusive games, but it could mean that both the Xbox One and the PS4 won't get off the ground if consumers actually revolt.

3 years? 5 years? That's outstandingly bad for a consumer product for a living room. Did they put the Vista team in charge of this?

3 years of life could mean a lot of things; a halflife of 3 years is disastrous, as is medium life of 3 years. Minimum 3 years life for a lot more reasonable.

Bang on. This was a text book example of Prisoner's Dilemma and Microsoft blew it by letting their cat out of the bag first.

They had to. The shitstorm created by some vague rumours (edge, orth, et al) when full on hurricane once Harrison opened his mouth post reveal. Now, at least those who are still on board will be able to see the games on display at e3, and be able to discuss them with less trouble.

It will be fascinating to see what sony does. They have to give the big three something wrt used games, they just have to.

If I was making the decision, I would go with an optional 60 day moratorium on used game sales and rentals for new releases that publishers could choose to use for their games. After the 60 days, the ps4 game would be like any ps3 game. That is, the owner would own it 100%, could sell it to whoever, lend it, etc. And companies like redbox could then rent it etc.

I think that would be enough for the big pubs to not ditch Sony, and I think it would be just enough to prevent a full on Xbone for the Ps4.

That's actually an interesting viewpoint, it also makes sense but not on every level.

What if MS was comparing their games sales with the number of achievements people get from these particular games too. What if they just found out that, let's just say Halo 3, has sold 8 mio. copies but 16 mio. different accounts got achievements from that game?

Well, from an developer standpoint I would ask myself "why the hell didn’t we sell more units of our game, when there are clearly so many more people interested in our product?" "We lost 8 mio. sales goddamn!"

So, in the end you have a product that has the potential to sell 16 mio. units, but because of resales you just get the half of it.

If I were the developer I would try anything to at least take piece of the cake that is these additional 8 mio. sales.

This is bad logic, because it assumes those additional 8 million were willing to play the game at a price that's actually profitable for the developer. Halo 3 could sell 30 million copies if they sold it for $10 at launch, but it's unlikely MS would make any money doing that.

if i have a roommate with a 360 but far less disposable income who borrows my games, restricting me from lending my titles will not result in additional sales.

If I'm a customer who rents everything through gamefly, and NEVER buys, restricting me from renting does not result in additional sales.

The only really possible audience for this are those who buy used games at say, $55 when a new title is $60, and you'd likely lose more customers through shitty practices (what do you mean I can't sell my games anymore? why does my system always need to be connected?) than you'd gain from this small segment of the market.

The publishers will have the ability to do this on their own. I don't think it's up to Sony to decide or restrict how they do it. Though of course they could, but they already said it's up to them.

It cost them a lot sure, but did they not also sell many additional consoles because of it? No idea if the extra sales made up the difference for the warranty costs etc though.

There numbers may be up but the profit on those consoles for the first year of RRoD is all red.

I would like to know who approached who...

Was it MS going to the publishers and offering to add DRM to games

Or

The publishers asking the console makers to add DRM to the consoles.

If the latter, why didn't Nintendo add it to th Wii U?

So esram is like a heater build in xboned.
Ms did bad dat 3rd console curse... :'(

Wii u also has that unprecedented partnership with 3rd parties?

Because Nintendo already has enough problems without people shitting on them for DRM? (see the current reaction towards MS)

Most of my friends are holding out on buying Xbones because it's technically inferior. They don't even care or know about the DRM stuff.

It actually surprised me. One would think it was the other way around.

Personally I think the 360 OS is just fine. I don't really care, I just want to play games. Doesn't the 360 OS just use 32mb?

I don't see a hundred fold difference in quality and functionality compred to the Xbone OS.

Nintendo does have restrictive DRM on its digital titles. DSi, 3DS, Wii and WiiU digital games are all tied to the single piece of hardware it was downloaded onto. With no means to transfer to other people or resale.

It's just on the physical side that Nintendo are DRM free.

after an almost 8 year wait you are surprised that people are disappointed MS isn't going balls out on the tech?

one of the biggest issues for me. would be easier to overlook some of the other stuff if they trumped sony on specs. if they can't even do that...
