Sony added 4 more GB of RAM for games, not for the OS. It would mean that out of the new 4 GB, only one is for games. I really don't think they'd make that mistake.

I don't think this is the case. In fact, I think it makes far more sense for Sony to disproportionately allocate the 4GB of RAM that they added to the OS. Think about it from their point of view and what they know about their competition. The extra 4GB was obviously a direct response to competition from Microsoft, who had 8GB. The most logical allocation of RAM for Sony would be to match Microsoft's allocation ratio. They already knew that they would have graphical superiority with their faster GPU and higher memory bandwidth, so from a competitive standpoint it makes sense to equip the PS4 to compete with Microsoft on other levels that they are aiming to have an advantage on. Sure, they could have thrown it all to games, and you would see diminishing returns between 5GB and 7GB. There is more value in putting it towards the OS, because it allows them to compete in a whole other sector.

Don't crucify me, English happens to be my fourth language, so I'm already sweating trying to make sense of most messages on this board. lol!

lame, I've now had so many languages under my belt that I tell people I'm on Language One.

I can only speak English, good on you man

In my scenario that I explained, they would've already been using 1GB out of their 4GB for the OS, so by adding 4GB more, they'd give 2GB to devs and take 2GB for the OS.

EDIT: Middle Paragraph Redacted.

Also, I'm not sure it'd be a mistake to add more RAM for OS purposes. One of their big selling points on the PS4 is going to be social gaming and sharing screens/videos with your friends via social networking, so if it takes more RAM to get that done, then they'd have to either a) add the RAM or b) completely change the strategy they outlined on 2/20.

So pessimistic. If this year and next years E3 don't deliver, forget about the rest of them. It's a once in a generation E3, you'll enjoy it. There's a bunch of games, some surprises, and you're being shown a new platform. Unless your expectations are ridiculous, you'll probably love it.

Care to expand on your comments about there being 'buckets of tears' tomorrow?
Doesn't exactly instill confidence ;p

but then is MS stupid? they've heard the outrage since they debuted xbone and they continue on with it without change

It's a completely different story. Microsoft was set on their DRM policy before it was made public, and no amount of pressure from fans would make them change it. Sony, as seen in the #PS4NoDRM thread, had simply not decided what to do with their DRM policy, which is why they are in a position now to take in fan feedback and actually do something about it.

How was the day at the beach :P ?

Anyway, the start of a console is always great.
The good thing about it, we're already pretty long into the generation and the general transformation isn't as big as PSX>PS2 or PS2>PS3.
Therefore alot of games should be already quite far, so the next 2 years should be awesome.
Lovely. It's still hot now, and will probably remain that way for the whole week. I haven't slept in 48 hours now, and I'm off to work in 2 hours, so I'm sure I'm going to love today! It's going to be rough.

Why not? I expect a lot of relief and joy. I've said several times now that I expect people are going to really enjoy this conference.

Not this again.

If Sony were worried about the OS, why go for the GDDR5 set-up in the first place? MS wanted an all in one box where Sony was simply aiming for a high performance game console hence GDDR5.

So wait, Man of Steel is actually good?

It's the first Superman film i;ve ever had any interest in. Going to see it at the Waterloo Imax in London. Going to be awesome. No red underpants!!

But MS have 3 OS running for different things so need the extra RAM.

Lets not forget what the PS3 and XB360 can do with under 50MB!!! of RAM free for the OS each.

Who knows if that's what's happening, but it doesn't sound like we have any proof that they're giving 7GB to devs whereas we have a developer saying that he only has access to 5GB (Jonathan Blow), so I'm not sure what to think.

Read the last page, this has already been explained

Because, like you said, they wanted to outperform Microsoft. The decision to increase the memory to 8GB was made late in the game, and they already committed to a unified pool of memory.

This. It seems very clear they were okay with 4 GB total at one point for the better ram.

Maybe they're not quite getting the most out of the PS4 yet?, i remember several developers claiming to have "maxed out" a console even in their early years, only to have someone else come along later on and state the same thing again... and again...

Kojima comes to mind.

It has been solved.
Someone on the forum linked decided to omit some tweets

Its not really pessimism on my end, its simply a fact that there is no reason for me to get excited for anything Sony has to show if they lay down some Microsoft level, or close bullshit DRM. If they do I wont buy their system, same as Microsoft it wont matter how many games they show because I just wont care anymore.

It will get me to watch my first Nintendo direct though, and start pricing PC parts. Including whatever Alienware had to announce during E3.

The 3 OS line doesn't really mean anything practically in terms of RAM usage. The fact is, if Sony wants to be able to compete with Microsoft on a feature level -- doing things like fast switching between applications, multitasking, etc. -- then they need to equip their system with the memory to do so.

Verendus buddy. I need a hint or something. Will Kojima be at the Sony presser?

Because, like you said, they wanted to outperform Microsoft. The decision to increase the memory to 8GB was made late in the game, and they already committed to a unified pool of memory.

Cerny stated the RAM increase was due mainly to developer request. If The Witness is using 5 GB of RAM, I can easily believe a lot of other developers weren't quite happy with the initial 4 GB set-up. It just doesn't make sense to reserve 3 GB of GDDR5 for OS tasks.

Keep this in mind kids

^_^ confiemed micresft actively attemptbuyinr PS44FOUR nonmetnions. IF y dont explifitly here 3rdparty say “OUR GAME IS EXCLUSIVE FOR XBONE’ confdinetly assuem Ps4 version is avabilelbe behind scenes. #truthfact

Relief inspires confidence.

Sorry, I missed some of that clarification while I was typing my post.

So he's venting about XBOX One's RAM issues and not PS4's?

Not venting, just responding to another Dev on why they will need to resort to streaming the game. Final product will not fit into unreserved memory on ps4 as its already exceeded 5gb in its current state .and I imagine they aren't done.

Do you reckon sony or microsoft will reveal a price point tommorrow?
I think if MS is going to go with $299, they'll definitely announce it. I was assuming it would be $399, but maybe with the horrible press they'd be willing to take a loss (and they can afford this more than Sony) just to get some great press and pull ahead early in the generation, especially as they're launching close to the holiday season when casuals and parents would consider picking up a game console.

Good to hear.
'Buckets of tears' usually has negative connotations round these parts, you see.
It's because you're a negative person! You see things which are not there, and you interpret them to fit your negative outlook! Stop being so negative Blaze!

In that respect, you're right to be wary. Personally, MS has ruined E3 for me because I don't like what they're doing, and what their potential success could mean in the long-term. I can easily see the US accepting the console, and them achieving a good level of success there. I don't think I'll be able to enjoy E3 in the same manner. On the other hand, I think you'll find PS4 is not quite the same with their DRM policy. PS4 will be similar to PS3 outside of a few changes. SCE should hopefully giving their details soon enough.
