PS3 piracy prevention was quite effective even without DRM. So no, I don't think so. If Sony uses it, it's most probably to prevent used games sales.

Also, if you look at the top left there is some depth. If it was laying down like your outline we wouldn't see that depth, it would drop out of sight or be a steep angle, depending on the angle it was taken at.
