Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

So, looks amazing, but like many others I wanted a Galaxy successor. Here's to hoping this is a holdover before that.

I have a slight feeling that this won't be the flagship Mario for Wii U. I could imagine another Mario is also in development that is more like the Galaxy/64 games.

Edit: The more I think about it, the more I kinda wish this was just for 3DS. :(
Agreed, furry fan fiction jokes aside it doesn't feel like a console Mario. I'm sure it'll be good, I suppose for once the creativity going into a Mario game reflects its sales potential. Maybe we'll get a better 2D Mario next time.

Nice to see Peach return also.

guess that explains how they could get a 3-D Mario game out so quickly after 3D Land.

oh well. looks great regardless. hopefully we'll see a Galaxy-level game down the road.

Ok my initial disappointment is all gone. Just remember there is almost no dev with as good a track record as these guys. There is nothing stopping some cool Galaxy-like level design just because of the camera angle or visual style.

No online co-op is still bullshit though, my best best Mario Galaxy friends don't live near me! Please add this in Nintendo. It doesn't have to as precise as if you were doing a 2D platformer.

There are some really nice screens on Nintendos e3 site, much better than on the stream.

Actually starting to warm to the game. Multiplayer should be sweet.

This was not what I was expecting, but it still looks fun as hell.

After expecting something with a little more grandeur, this is a tad bit deflating.

Honestly this isn't what I wanted. I feel like this would be more suitable on the 3DS. I love the expansive 3D Mario games but I fear Nintendo is starting to shy away from them with the recent trends. This honestly looks and feels rushed.

Could someone explain to me why this "plays like a handheld" flipping out I keep seeing. I don't understand how a game can "play like a handheld".

People think that because 3D Land was designed for a handheld, this will be too.

Makes no sense at all.

The camera angle is adjustable as per past Mario 3D games outside of Galaxy. Really this is more like a multiplayer 3D 64 in that regard (i.e. bigger worlds to explore than Galaxy's razor-sharp focus). People saying "small, handheld words" are incorrect.

My thoughts as well. I still think this game will be fantastic but it could be like a lite version of what we'll eventually see in a couple years. That will be nice actually, some more diversity in the 3D Marios. I don't think this will be a 3D Land clone like people seem to assume.

You know I liked 3D Land on the 3DS. And in the past I was really hoping & wishing for a 3D Land sequel on the 3DS. But I'm somewhat disapointed with this anouncement. Generally 3D console Mario games have been brand new things, since we already saw 3D Land on the 3DS, 3D World seems a little stale. I honestly wasn't expecting this. I was expecting a 3D Land sequel on the 3DS, but now I guess that won't happen.

For home consoles I was hoping for something brand new, or if they couldn't do something new, something more of a Galaxy style game would be better for non-portable consoles IMO. Yeah, Galaxy 3 would've made me happier.

Basically I would've been so happy about this on the 3DS, but for the Wii U I'm disapointed.

I still hope eventually another style 3D Mario game will show up on the Wii U too.

Can't shake the feeling that this is/was a 3DS game and they needed something else to bolster wiiu support. Probably the least I have ever cared for a mario game, even if I'm sure it'll be fun.

hmm that wouldn't shock me.

the nintendo e3 cycle:

games shown, fans hyped > games they wanted not shown, fans proclaim presentation as failure > e3 media released and suprises, fans hyped, dissapointment vanishes

same every year

Would kill for this to be on the 3DS instead, even if it meant multiplayer was still just local only. I can't believe people say they are disappointed.

Also this leads me to believe that the 3DS may get a true 3D game too.

The dev video for this looked really great. It's going to come down to whether they can be as creative as they were for 3D Land, which had very brilliant and creative level design mixing both 3D and 2D platforming simultaneously.

Based on 3D Land?

So, no proper words? Just artificial looking levels made out of shapes?

Disappointing.

Both Galaxies did not not have "proper worlds" (especially the second one, which used a traditionally 2D Mario level select menu) and your criticism of aritifical looking levels could easily apply to the planets (and again, especially in the sequel where many of the levels only have one or two stars). Actually, I'd say Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the first game where Nintendo really started it. Both games were absolutely phenomenal, though.

There's no reason - especially from a pretty brief trailer that shows few levels (and a lot of the levels shown are clearly early game levels) - to believe that Super Mario 3D World won't have the same type of creativity that the Galaxy games had. I think 3D World will always be at a disadvantage when people compare the two because the Galaxy games had the gravity mechanic going for them, which allows for very creative level design. But even in the trailer shown you can definitely see some quite creative game concepts in 3D World - the multiplayer itself (which I think loos fantastic), riding on a giant sea creature, throwing snowballs to one another, Kuribo's ice skates? All of that seems pretty new to me and I'm interested to see more levels.

One concern I still have is the music. Didn't really like what I heard, we'll see though.

In retrospect Nintendo's E3 is looking way better. This dev videos and extended looks are way more interesting.

Crushingly disappointing.

I seriously went back to bed depressed.

I never thought I would say this, especially after all the other disappointments from Nintendo through the years, but they've lost the plot. I cannot BELIEVE this is what they've brought us. A console release of a 3DS game with multiplayer and a catsuit.

I would have rather had Galaxy 3. I would have rather waited another year and gotten a proper successor to Galaxy. This is NOT that game, and I feel burned.

Okay, after watching the Developer Interview and some Youtube videos of the E3 demoes my hype is now through the roof. Looks amazing.

What are people disappointed about?

Apparently the fact that it's not a sequel to Galaxy, which we didn't need, or yet another re-imagining of Super Mario 64. As much as I've enjoyed every 3D Mario game, this one looks fantastic to me. Finally a 3D Mario I can play with my girlfriend and potentially family members.

Some of ya'll expect too much inside your imaginations.

I don't get it. Mario Kart 8 looks amazing graphically, so why doesn't this?

Art style is a little different.

Watch the Developer Direct. This game looks great. The trees, the clear pipes are eye candy.

Im happy they went this route.

I think people need to make up their mind after they play it with 4 people.

Honestly, this is about what I imagined a future 3d Mario to be at the time when I was playing my Snes in the early 90s.
I think we'll also get another "modern" Mario later, but this looks awesome to me

they should have included some movable camera footage in the original trailer. (4:40 on in the developer video)

it makes the world feel way more open and "mario 64ish"

Developer Direct. Tell me what you want, but I feel it's amazing.

Gotta say that video has given me a lot more confidence in this game. It honestly looks like a great game. It just isn't what I had been anticipating.

I never played the 3DS game, so I don't really know what to expect. I know that it apparently has tons of levels and people seem to think it does a pretty good job of replicating the 2D mario experience. Some even seem to prefer it to Galaxy, so it must be doing something right.

If this has a lot of levels, and a long adventure with plenty of variety, then it can still be a pretty amazing mario game, I think. Some of the stuff with the touch screen seems pretty inventive. The graphics are very pretty, and I like the potential of changing characters like SMB 2.

I just hope it isn't too focused on multiplayer.

I need to see some E3 play-through videos and hear some impressions. I might be able to build up some genuine hype for this game.

I never thought there would be so many people disappointed in a 3D Mario with 4 player multiplayer where the characters have their Super Mario Bros 2 characteristics. Not even Charging Chuck could save the reveal for you?

I would have been disappointed by a single player Galaxy 3.

As much fun as this looks, it's the first console 3D Mario game that doesn't look like it's going to feel like an "adventure," which is a bit disappointing. Also, I hope the quality of single player hasn't been sacrificed for multiplayer.

I like furry-Mario and all, but very underwhelming. I was expecting for interesting controller shanigans but controller is used for picking coins? Plus it's pretty much SMB3L x NSMB

I know it will be great but not_sure_what_I_was_expecting.gif

The following is something that I posted on another forum about my thoughts on the game.

Oh my lord at Super Mario 3D World, I am so fucking excited for that! Super Mario 3D Land was a damn good game with an amazing concept for 3D Mario (linear 3D Mario that has 2D Mario mechanics), but it felt a bit undercooked mechanically and level design wise, especially with all those repeating levels. This is because SM3DL had a rather rushed dev cycle.

From what I saw of that trailer, this game already looks quite improved. I see a lot more variety in level design, mutliplayer looks fun, Cat Mario looks like a great and unique sort of replacement for "flying" that fits 3D Mario, and Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad playing differently is something Mario has sorely needed to return for a long time! Finally, level design wise, I noticed that the stages seem to be FAR bigger than SM3DL's, so this game might have a lot more exploration stuff. The smaller levels also seemed to have more interesting concepts than Super Mario 3D Land's sometimes bland level design. In particular, I liked that level with the rising death trap looking creatures, and seeing the Goomba's Ice Skate made me laugh!

Overall, I wouldn't be shocked if this was 3D Mario's New Super Mario Bros Wii: aka, a MUCH improved sequel to the portable original!

Edit: Something I forgot to mention: The great part about Cat Mario is that it fixes a problem linear 3D Mario has had. Flying power ups would be extremely broken in those (though tbh I can see Nintendo making levels designed around it working in 3DW from the levels I saw so far), its the reason Tanooki was nerfed so hard in 3D Land (granted it was still sorta broken there). Cat Mario is perfect, it means that there's a way to sorta "fly" up walls without breaking level design too much! Also, this gives me hope that the game has less of the "boring floating platforms in space" issues that some 3D Land levels have!
