Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

Graphics and all.

These posts are ridiculous.

I don't know man, this is Nintendo's laziest copy and paste job yet.

thats called horse shit to save face for the team and Nintendo.

Nintendo is just as bad as EA and Activision. Iwata found a cheap formula to pump these mario games out every year now and there gonna stick to that.

Get real. Where in the past have you seen a new Mario platformer every year? Sure the NSMB is unoriginal now and formulaic but that's it. You ever heard of Infamous, Killzone, Halo, or Ratchet & Clank. Sequels were pumped out for those series and no one complained half as much as they do when Nintendo releases a sequel.

This game is going to be amazing.

3D Land (on the 3DS) is right up there with Mario 64 for me. I have no doubt that this will be just as good if not better.

Aww yiss.

Can't help but be disappointed by this. It's supposed to be the game where Nintendo let loose with unfiltered creativity. Everything looks so plain and expected :/

Now I kind of want someone at E3 or at the Best Buy demos tomorrow to try and record a video with the camera rotated behind Mario's back and see how many people think it suddenly looks like Galaxy 3.

This is so much more ambitious than Galaxy 3, Sunshine 2, or 128 (as much as I would still welcome that. I still hope it comes later this gen).

I agree, actually. We've had four 3D Mario games, but only one "2D 3D" Mario, and it was clearly rushed. By giving it another go in 3D World, they can figure out more of what's fun, what isn't fun, and really tighten the game formula.

Plus, it's the first multiplayer 3D Mario, and they fit all four players in it. that's got to count for something.

Man this looks like hot garbage. Just looks boring. More garbage multiplayer in a Super Mario game instead of the challenging platforming we want.

Wow, saw this video earlier today and thought it was for 3DS and got excited. Did not expect the WiiU first true Mario to look like that.

Can you explain to me how? This is 3D Land deluxe.

Not that I especially wanted a sequel to any of those anyway. I think the takeaway here is that nobody wanted to see something so safe and familiar. I don't understand how this game can be seen as ambitious at all outside of the multiplayer, and even that's pushing it for people who... won't be using the multiplayer function.

The game does look fun and the graphics are pleasing. But it seems to be completely lacking in ambition or scope. I can see the appeal for Nintendo to continue in the 3d Land direction but I want something as fresh as galaxy was.

I have no doubt the level design will be top notch, I can see some of the ideas in 3D land getting expanded to a massive scale here, I'm thinking about the Unchartedish Bowser fights at the end when Bowser is chasing Mario and everything is falling apart around you. So I'm sure this game will have some really amazing stuff that uses the power of the Wii U.

But I feel the disappointment that a lot of others do. 3D Mario's have always stood out as generation defining games, I almost feel like maybe this is just a stop gap they are rushing to together while they perfect the beat a it were, on the true 3D Mario that we all want. I can't imagine this all were going to get this whole generation. I expect that Mario next year even.

Holy crap whoever said to watch the dev direct on Wii U wasn't kidding. It looks amazing in 1080p but like a 3DS game on YouTube or the stream: Nintendo's almost redeemed in my eyes now. I admit I was wrong!

The route they took for this game seems a little too safe. I was expecting a new 3D adventure more in line with Galaxy. Will probably still be good.

+ It's new Mario!
+ 4-player coop! Given how much fun I've had with NSMBWii and NSMBU, I am very excited about this feature.
+ Pretty graphics.

- They've modeled it off the worst 3D Mario (albeit still a pretty good game).
- It's safe at a time when Nintendo probably could have used something mind-blowing (then again, it's hard to be more "mind-blowing" than the SMG games, and a third of those probably would have had diminishing returns).
- I really hope the controls are better than 3D Land's.
- Are we ever going to get a SM64/SMS successor?

I loved Mario 3D Land. Played this on the show floor. I'm not sure if it was because of co-op or what, but I really just...wasn't feeling this.

Prior to the announcement 3D Mario was probably my most anticipated game, too. :(

Well ok.

When I first saw the game, I cannot express how disappointed I felt. A sequel to 3D Land as a mainline, console Mario? What the hell? It seemed lazy, uninspired and so conservative. I still feel that way.

But a few considerations.

Obviously, local co-op is the big addition here. I have never played a 3D platformer with co-op. It sounds pretty cool, and the 3D land style is definitely suited to it. think about Galaxy with four players. It wouldn't work. The camera would not be able to keep up. So in that sense, the 3D land style of Mario is a smart idea here.

Also, the game is most certainly goes further than the 3DS game did. Its prettier, for one. And it has original boss fights, for two. It might also have worlds that are more defined visually, compared to the 3DS game. So thats cool.

Look, I'm still dissapointed. How could I not be? But I loved 3D Land. And though i hope to god we get a big, epic, creative Mario adventure, this was probably easier (And faster) to pump out, and I'm sure I'll have fun with it.

With friends.
Great post. This pretty much echoes my feelings exactly.

Mario 3D Land looked boring to a lot of people when it was first revealed, too. There are plenty who were meh at its announcement and loved the game when they got to play through it, myself included. Nintendo likes to just show the easy first levels, I guess...

I loved 3D Land, this will be a definite buy from me.
It's probably Galaxy/Sunshine-scope levels but in the bite-sized level chunks that 3D Land had, which for me wouldn't be a bad thing. It kept a bit of variety in the scenery.

The more footage I watch of this, the more I want to play it!

December in the US.

Wow....really. *small rant incoming* Despite the fact that every 3d Mario has outsold DKCR and 3d Mario is something truly different vs the 2d platformer they launched with last year they are going to put DKCR in the Black Friday position of selling the console to people when they have their two competitors launching around then? DKCR would make so much more sense in December. Hell it would make so much more sense in Q1 while Mario Kart was rushed for the holidays

So I know what was wrong with this trailer... the music choice. compare the music in the trailer to the orchestral tracks that we've heard in galaxy and the game just feels weaker. I have to be honest though, the game looks very fun, just hope they change the soundtrack.

After seeing the game, I can't help but feel like this is what should have come out instead of NSMBU.

It doesn't seem like you can have more than one person playing the same character though, so that's a shame.

Um....there's much more going on in the second shot than first(which is just a skeleton). You're getting to generic comparisons that could apply for ANY 3D platformer since Mario 64 lol. Mario has came along a good ways than the N64 days

Yep. I agree they should be switched. Maybe it's a development thing and those extra few weeks are vital? :P

Taken as a whole, both systems have a pretty solid line-up. We basically know every game for Wii U until holiday 2014 at this point, in my opinion.

June: Game & Wario, Animal Crossing
July: Lol
August: Pikmin 3, Mario & Luigi
September: TW101
October: Wind Waker HD, Wii Party U, Pokemon X&Y
November: Donkey Kong Country, Zelda 3DS
December: Super Mario 3D World

Wii Fit U on Wii U & Mario Golf and Mario Party on 3DS are also supposed to slot in there somewhere.

2014:
Art Academy U
Bayonetta 2
X
Yoshi's New Island (by Arzest, lol)
SMT X FE
Smash Bros.
Mario Kart 8
Yarn Yoshi

I want to believe this isn't their main Mario game on the Wii U, just another NSMB kind of game. Those are neat, but they're not the real deal.

As much as I love 3D Land, I think I'm among those who were hoping for another Galaxy-esque game. The mandatory Wiimote controls were a big barrier for me as a lefty, so a new installment using the GamePad would've given me another shot to properly enjoy the series.

I'm still hyped for 3D World, though. All the E3 demo levels seem great, and the cat suit looks amazing because you can do so much with it (climb, float, attack, dive)--I'm sure it'll make running through courses twice as fun. That you can play as different characters again, SMB2-style, is icing on the cake. The game looks really aesthetically pleasing to me, too.

Having watched the trailer, the Developer Roundtable and some on-site gameplay I don't think I understand why people are mad (unless you hate Super Mario 3D Land in which case I can understand the potential trepidation). I'm almost certain people would have been sayin' "Nintendo ran out of ideas" if they showed off something akin to Mario Galaxy 3.

Looks good, runs good and I'm seeing alot of potential for tons of fun gameplay. No online co-op is BULLSHIT though and I'm a bit worried all the attention to multiplayer may hurt the single player experience. Otherwise this looks great. I feel this is much less a case of the product being bad and more some imaginary expectations not being met and backlash towards that.

so my impressions after today

i was able to play three levels. the first was 2-6 or something. some guy had a gamepad and i had a wii remote. i don't know if you can play with a nunchuck, but none were available for multiplayer at the demo. controlling a character in 3d space with a d-pad kinda blows. the game will automatically bubble you if you fall behind the leader, rendering multiplayer largely useless. however, the levels are designed in a way to accommodate four people. there's not much in the way of speed or spectacle from what i played.

however i will say the cat suit is a pretty neat addition. it makes the game easier, but it's more like knuckles in 3d and makes me wonder if a mario/sonic crossover truly would work out well.

the last level i played, we had to all steer and jump on this thing floating down a riverbed. it was a lot like a mario party minigame.

overall it's just this disappointing thing, but i suppose that's what i should expect from ead tokyo.

I'm really worried here, if this is the first half of 2014 it will be amazing (besides maybe FE thats not coming till later), but I've been through a Nintendo console many times before. If this is the whole year lineup and Nintendo is about to have one of their typical launch all the big franchises and then have a huge drought for almost a year it will be pretty bad.

overall it's just this disappointing thing, but i suppose that's what i should expect from ead tokyo.

Isn't Galaxy 2 one of your favorite games? I remember you raving about it back in the OT.

Damn, seems like this has been a long time coming.

After watching the trailer I got a strange feeling that Super Mario Sunshine was more of a successor to SM64 than 3D World is.

I mean, its a beautiful game, but that fixed camera should stay strictly in the portable games.

Edit: I seem to have forgotten Galaxy 2 had a similar pulled back camera.
Edit 2: Looks like you CAN move the camera angle with the gamepad. Nice!
