Eh. To most people, Mario is Mario. The fact that this isn't like SM64 is not why Nintendo's stock is low.

Seriously, I loved 3D Land so much so I am so glad they're doing this instead of Galaxy 3. And it's about time we had a 4 player 3D platformer, so awesome.

That should definitely be in, it's 3D 4 player. That and they are going to patch NSMBU with it so guess they're realizing. :)

They're adding pro controller support to NSMBU. I hope they also add options for the classic controller. I hate that they've neglected the classic controller. A controller for traditional games that doesn't work with 2d Mario, 2d Donkey Kong, or 2d Kirby.
 
I think it looks fantastic and it was easily the coolest game I saw from all of E3. As someone that didn't care for 3D Mario, yet enjoyed 3D Land a ton, this is a far better outcome than what I was expecting.

I hope they add support for pro controllers though. I'm not always a huge fan of the Wiimote's DPad and neither are the people I'll be playing this with.

Yeah, this is baffling. It really soured my whole impression of the game, which was honestly soured from the get-go sadly. I really want to try the game out on the Gamepad, but the fact that this is even an issue is puzzling.

Historically, when I have thought of the Mario series, one of the very basic core elements has been that controlling Mario has to feel fun in its own right. Mario games more than maybe any other series have made this one the key characteristic that defines them. This game, manages to do away with that proud history for seemingly no reason.

When I stepped up to play Player 2 today, I should have never been handed a single Wiimote. That whole things was a mistake.
 
Wow, I kept away from GAF all day after getting all my Nintendo info, and I am SHOCKED so many are complaining about this game on here. 3D Land was amazing, and the idea of an HD sequel with multiplayer that includes four unique characters sounds like a perfect way to introduce 3D Mario to the Wii U. The game looks amazing visually too, so I'm not quite sure what more people could want with this. The best Mario games are those that keep the action focused and gameplay tight, which seems to be the case here. Stop wishing for GTA Mario folks, it's not going to happen (as it shouldn't).
 
Its weird, but I sort of liked this, and I wouldn't entirely hate owning a Wii-U in the future for it and maybe Mario Kart. But at $350 it is a horrible value. I'd gobble it up at the gamecube price of a $150 bundle, but that will never happen.

Wtf are you talking about we just want a proper Mario game not a HD port of a fucking 3DS game. This is the equivalent of sonic 3D blast.
 
Really wish this was on 3DS and that WiiU would get something a little more fresh and robust. I'm playing 3D Land right now and it's absolutely outstanding; but it should stay portable.

I didn't know that. Yeah, I prefer the classic controller to the Pro myself as well. It's shocking how many controllers they're supporting (or not) now.

Yeah, the controls are definitely an issue. What's odd to me was when I saw the trailer for this and DKC this morning, I really wanted them to be in 3D. These games were made for 3D and now that they're taking it away, particularly when we saw how useful it is for these types of games is kind of mind boggling. They're pretty much copying 3DS games to the Wii U and Wii/N64 games to the 3DS. I'm so confused about this. :/

I think releasing a 3d land sequel is probably a sign that development for the real mario flagship is going to take longer and I don't expect it until 2015 to be honest. I also expect the flagship Zelda and HD metroid around that time as well as a $199 price point. Is what they have for the next 12 months until next e3 when they show these three enough to get the ball rolling in sales? What nintendo really needs is a couple of third party games to really do well in the next 12 months or it will be a niche generation for them.

I don't get the issue with DK, but my issue with 3D World is that instead of getting a revolutionary, new Mario like we do for every Nintendo home console per generation, we're getting a sequel to an existing game, and had WiiU's 2nd E3 without even a hint at a proper Mario.

A Nintendo sequel is literally the worst thing ever to him. Every one. Unless the sequel is completely different and features new characters... a.k.a. a new IP.

It's a 3D Land sequel. Take it or leave it.

In essence, SM3DW is a beefed up version of a 3DS game. Tropical Freeze looked very much like Returns with a some perspective changes added for good measure. Now, compare this to the reveal of Galaxy.

It's not that SM3DW and Tropical Freeze will be boring, but people just expected something more, myself included.
 
My absolute biggest problem with 3D land was the fact that it was just so bland. No world themes, no stand out levels with interesting mechanics, The map was basically a menu and the bosses were absolute crap. There was also how annoyingly short it was. If they fixed these problems (Seems the bosses are already WAY better in this) this game will be truly amazing.
 
Mario 3D Land was in my opinion a much better game than Sunshine, as were the Galaxies. Not just presentation but fun and gameplay design. Mario 64 was cool because it was still compact enought to have direction but Sunshine is the least fun I've ever had with a Mario game. I hope they leave that large level style and lack of diversity back on the GC. A return to Delfino with better game structure? Why not. Although I prefer the Mushroom Kingdom and ... Space.

I'm curious how stationary the camera is when single player, it seems like they give you some control. I agree, the game just isn't as dynamic when it's stationary. I really want to get my hands on this single player.

"Proper" Mario titles are few and far between, and that's unsurprising considering the level of gameplay design and innovation that goes into them. There's no reason to assume that we aren't getting one because Nintendo hasn't yet announced anything this early in the Wii U's life cycle.

I heard/read that the pro controller is supported.......but I agree with you, I def don't want to play with a dpad.
 
I need more whimsy in my Mario games. Getting pretty sick of these "Super Mario Bros. 1-4 in 3D" visuals where Mario is just jumping around on different colored blocks. Need more inspired environments pls

They're trying to rush games out. I guess this is what we might have to expect for a while. I'm okay with it for now because I want these games in HD with proper controls, but they do need to mix it up some after this. Every first party game for the first year has been a port/re-used assets of some sort.
 
I just saw Hayashida presentation video. I liked everything I saw (clear pipes are a nice touch).

I am excited cause I love platformers.

Up and coming we have 3D Mario platformy goodness, a sequel to DKCR, a return to greatness for Sonic, a new Yoshi's Island, a love letter to Mega Man in the form of a Smash appearance... now where's my Kirby?
 
I'm in no doubt that Nintendo is dumping their core franchises in to the market within a year to have a relaunch this holiday.

Many games aren't as fresh as they usually are, but are more of an upgrade.

The fucking funniest thing I saw in one demo was the guy who got to use the U pad actually using the d-pad on it. I was like what are you doing!!


Edit: Also they better go back and allow nunchucks. That would just make no sense, they make controlling Mario a dream.

Does anybody know if it has been confirmed if this game has been made by EAD Tokyo 1 or 2? From the interviews is sounds to me like it's from the same guys that made 3D land (Team 2). Also, (not to be harsh on it) it looks more like a game that has been made in two years than a game made in 5, and it uses a lot of the same assets as 3D land.

If it is 2, could we expect another game from Team 1 (which if that is the case have been working on something else since 2007?) to be revealed soon.

Aww hell

I don't think I can get used to playing any game with the gamepad for as many hours as it would take to complete a Mario game. No nunchuck support means I may as well skip this when I pick up a Wii U next year.

It is indeed being made by EAD Tokyo 2. EAD Tokyo 1 was the team primarily behind OoT 3D, so they haven't been completely free.

You can move the camera with the Gamepad gyro. Doesn't seem like 360 degree motion, but the levels aren't really set up like that anyway.

Same goes for analog control. Ridiculous, but they want it to play like 2d essentially. It's not an oversight. They are Other M-ing us. :/
 
i really wish Nintendo had come out and said beforehand that theyre making a multiplayer more casual spin off Mario/sequel to 3D Land. And that a sequel to Galaxy will be coming later.

Well I would be kind of upset with a sequel to Galaxy.

I was really hoping Nintendo would keep doing new things with 3D Mario. Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy and 3D Land were all super fresh. Galaxy 2 was masterful but I don't want them to keep going back to it. I wish they just did something else.

I also was having some serious depth perception issues. Just like a lot of the 3DS game, the level I played had very little sense of perspective, but there's no stereoscopic 3D to compensate for it. I've gotten 120 stars on Galaxy 1 and 2 and all the coins on 3D Land and I kept missing jumps in really weird, depth-confused ways.
