Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

I thought I saw Peach kind of floating in one of the videos. That being said I would enjoy something influenced by Super Mario Bros. 2 (U.S.). Also, it's too bad cell shading was a short lived aesthetic phenomenon in video games. This is a game I think that could have benefited.

That's confirmed. Watch this: http://e3.nintendo.com/videos/#/super-mario-3d-world

Mario is standard
Luigi jumps higher
Peach floats
Toad runs fast

Something that I haven't seen a lot of people talk about with regards to this title are the absolutely terrible controls. Now, I'm not talking about the controls for the first player. That player is on the Gamepad, and I am sure everything feels great over there. The problem is the controls for all the other players.

At the demos on the show floor, Nintendo only had Wiimotes for all the players to control beyond the first. That meant that we were stuck using d-pads to control a 3D Mario game. I'll say that again: Nintendo forced me to play with a d-pad in a 3D Mario game. I just didn't understand. How can one play a 3d platformer effectively with a d-pad? I had to try for myself to find out. The answer is that one can't. This controlled like shit for me and anyone else I saw not being player one. When I asked the reps at the booth about other control options, they stated that the use of Nunchucks was not supported, but that they were "working on" Wii U Pro Controller support.

This to me was just an unbelievable oversight on Nintendo's part. I won't go into my other problems with the game just yet because I want to give it another chance on a controller that actually works when navigating a 3D world. I will say that I just can't imagine that the people that have made controlling characters their number one priority in the past have fumbled that aspect of this game so badly.

Nunchuck and Pro Controller are a must, Nintendo. I do not want to be using a D-pad to move in 3D. Metroid other M was pretty smooth for doing that, and it still felt super clunky.

I also hope that single player doesn't have to use the Gamepad. I don't want to hold that thing if I'm not using it for anything substancial.

This looks very fun and joyous in its own right, and I very much enjoyed 3D Land, but... I wasn't expecting a spiritual successor to 3D Land. I was expecting one for Galaxy and Galaxy 2, two games which absolutely blitz 3D Land in terms of creativity and scope. 3D Land worked, and worked well, because it was on a handheld platform and was specifically tailored as such. 3D World strikes me as 3D Land given a spruce-up, having three extra players tacked on and a few suits added in.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't hoping for some rehashed Galaxy 3, but it seems to me that they've scrapped ingenuity and scope for multiplayer. It's still EAD Tokyo, so I'll play it and thoroughly enjoy it, but there's no sign of it even attempting to surpass what came before, and that's pretty damned saddening. :(

Like it has been mentioned, the game looks decent, but it is a HUGE downgrade from the previous Galaxy games. I mean it's not a "lazy" effort, but it really doesn't look like a whole lot of love and development time and money is being put into this. Sad.
Before SM3DL came out on 3DS some gaffers said the same (they lamented how it was different from a Galaxy game and thought quickly made to push 3DS sales).
They all eat a crow.

I swear if this is another Mario platformer designed for the mentally inebriated of the current generation with super guides and whatnot I will never buy a Mario game again.

No online? Hello Nintendo, sometimes people can't get 3 other friends (or strangers) to come to their homes and play.

Yeah, it's a shame that using the super guide is always obligatory. What were they thinking?

Don't buy it and send a message to Nintendo. I know I'm not paying money for this, until they reveal a proper mainline Mario game for WiiU. I wish Club Nintnedo had a survey up on this game right now.

god nintendo fans will talk themselves into anything.

'nope, this isn't the real game'

I think that this is a way to slowly ease the 2D Mario players into a more 3D world. Maybe after this they'll work on something bigger and more innovative (ala Sunshine or Galaxy) than this.

But I mean that's a very optimistic view to take, so yeah. I don't care either way, I think I might even be skipping this.

I feel like some people can't get over the presentation of the game. With Galaxy you had outer space which is really cool. Then with Sunshine you had a tropical island. With this, you have what seems to be the Mushroom Kingdom as shown by Mario platformers over they years.

These all sound like the same complaints everyone had when 3D Land got announced. Then it turned out awesome.

History tends to repeat, so this only provides more reason to believe this will be awesome.

I actually just watched the trailer for the first time since the direct, and the graphics are a lot better than their made out to be. Dat HD Mushroom Kingdom.

You guys think there will be a new story in this one? peach is a playable and Bowser didnt appear in the trailer. Maybe Wart is back.

Mario and story?

Definately not what I was expecting, but this looks great. Haven't played 3D Land, but this looks like natural continuation of 2D and 3D games. And if there's tons of levels, this will be great.

That's exactly what 3D Land was. Melded 2D and 3D Mario together. Awesome platforming. And a shit-ton of levels.

The fact that this is coming out in December means that Nintendo will have shot their Mario platformer load (2D and 3D) within about a year of Wii U launch. Given that they're not traditionally prone to over-sequelizing, I'm hoping that in another few years we'll see a new mainline Mario game with fresh ideas.

In the meantime, this looks fun. My wife will be excited that Peach is playable and has the float-jump. Hopefully the challenge ramps up faster than 3D Land.

Ah cool, I'm supposed to buy 3DS at some point with 3D Land (and some other games of course), but since I just got Wii U, I think I'll wait a while. Maybe next price drop whenever it would take place.

The lack of online really kills any excitement I had for this game. Every time Nintendo announces a Mario game with co-op people beg for online but for some reason Nintendo just sticks their fingers in their ears and goes "la la la la la la." I was already angry at the creative bankruptcy in the game, but now the confirmation of no online makes the the first 3D Mario platformer that I won't buy.

I'm not going to pretend I didn't want something of grander scale, but EAD Tokyo is one of the most consistently great developers in the world, so I can at least put that aside until I try the damn thing,

There are several levels in the demo. I will judge after seeing more levels as the ones showed were the standard first levels. I like what I see SM3DL is great, but I expected to be blown away.

I also expected something big, my bet is they needed to build a game fast, so they went to this safe route. I expect there next game to be what we all expected of this one.

A question to either those who followed closely footage or played the game themselves, can you at least slightly control Mario's speed with analog or are there only two speeds -> normal and with run button?

I'll be honest, I'm glad they went this route. I doubt a game comparable in gameplay and scale of Mario Galaxy (2) could be released so quickly. I'll take this Nintendo, and I want you to take your time crafting the next grand Mario adventure.

It will be amazing if/when this game comes out and is heralded as one of the greatest Mario platformers, a "worthy follow-up to the Galaxy games, and better, at least, in the multiplayer component."

I'll be eagerly awaiting the reversals.

Seems a little late. You shouldn't have bought all the other ones that also don't have online. That's just how Mario is.
This is the first 3D Mario platformer with co-op and the only NSMB game I've ever bought was the one on Wii U. Also just because the NSMB games don't have online doesn't mean "that's just how Mario is" nor should it be that way.
Nintendo has put online into some of their biggest games, like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros, so why do they have such a stick up their asses about it with Mario platformers.

I'm going through all the steps of being a Nintendo fan.

1. Denial - this can't be the new 3D Mario game! There has to be another flagship Mario!

2. Anger - pretty obvious

3. Bargaining - this will be acceptable if it has online multplayer

4. Depression - NO ONLINE NO GALAXY CALIBER MARIO, Nintendo as we know it is dead

5. Acceptance - Hey, I actually loved 3D Land on the 3DS and this game looks like great fun.

This is hilarious LOL. Pretty much sums up how I felt after the stream yesterday morning.

I'll buy it but still a bit disappointed. Will we never get another open-world Mario? I guess I should go play Sunshine again.

This looks absolutely awesome. Exactly what I want out of 3D Mario. I loved it immediatly when the trailer started and loved it even more when I saw the multiplayer gameplay, complete with the SMB2 character styles.

I don't get the criticism. This is what 3D Mario was always meant to be. It looks as good as the Galaxy games to me (which, along with SMB3 and 3D Land, are my favorite Mario games to date). And, if anything, SM64 and SMS are the weirdos in the series.

I'm pumped for this game. I loved 3D Land and felt it was the best 3D Mario in years.

I never really cared for the Galaxy games. They were okay but the gravity/spherical gimmick just didn't do a thing for me. I prefer SM64 or even Sunshine, to be honest. I hope we'll get SM64-2 at some point too but this still looks quality.

Whoa, they went and announced the Frog Suit yesterday?

TOTALLY MISSED THAT

megaton

...i am going to be playing this game in 6 hours hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngh hold me GAF

Never say never, people are clamouring for one. If not open-world then one to rival Galaxy. I'm sure it'll come, just later rather than sooner unfortunately.

I absolutely love the Galaxy titles, and I am a bit disappointed that the Mario reveal wasn't as "epic," but anyone with a 3DS and Super Mario 3D Land--or at least the grand majority--know how special that game is. It has a replayable, addictive quality thanks to the generally "bite-sized" levels, and there are A LOT of levels. Part of its charm comes from the 3D, but the trailer yesterday seemed to reflect developers' efforts to replicate the effect on Wii U. I was kind of hoping for a follow-up to 3D Land, and I'm glad we got it.

Also: Bayonetta 2 looks insane.

I'm REALLY warming up to this game. The animation is just fluid and smooth. It's very beautiful after watching the Developer Direct.

I wonder how come they didn't do a Developer Direct for X though. :(

The game looks fun but yea it doesn't scream next gen mario title. In fact, it looks like a mario title that comes out on the 3DS every once in a while..

So, I knew I had seen the art render of Mario, Luigi, Peach, & Toad before.

When I bought my Wii U at launch in Japan, they put it inside an extra cardboard box - "gift wrapping" - as below. The art is on there is the same they used for the invite for the press event @ E3.

Inception?

Have some questions about this,

1) Does it have full 360 analogue control like Galaxy? Or is it 8-way movement like 3D Land?

2) Is there a run button like 3D Land?
