Something that I haven't seen a lot of people talk about with regards to this title are the absolutely terrible controls. Now, I'm not talking about the controls for the first player. That player is on the Gamepad, and I am sure everything feels great over there. The problem is the controls for all the other players.
At the demos on the show floor, Nintendo only had Wiimotes for all the players to control beyond the first. That meant that we were stuck using d-pads to control a 3D Mario game. I'll say that again: Nintendo forced me to play with a d-pad in a 3D Mario game. I just didn't understand. How can one play a 3d platformer effectively with a d-pad? I had to try for myself to find out. The answer is that one can't. This controlled like shit for me and anyone else I saw not being player one. When I asked the reps at the booth about other control options, they stated that the use of Nunchucks was not supported, but that they were "working on" Wii U Pro Controller support.
This to me was just an unbelievable oversight on Nintendo's part. I won't go into my other problems with the game just yet because I want to give it another chance on a controller that actually works when navigating a 3D world. I will say that I just can't imagine that the people that have made controlling characters their number one priority in the past have fumbled that aspect of this game so badly.
