Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

Still can't get over how terrible the music is for all these new Marios (besides Galaxy of course). Seems like the only ones they put any effort into anymore are the "main" 3D console entries.

Have some questions about this,

1) Does it have full 360 analogue control like Galaxy? Or is it 8-way movement like 3D Land?

2) Is there a run button like 3D Land?

I'm guessing it'll be 8 way movement if only because other players will likely have to use the wiimote d-pad.

Get over yourself, music was even shittier in Sunshine and that's as main as it'll get.

1) Don't know

2) Yes.

But the camera is not fixed, you can move it freely like in SM64

That's unfortunate. If it's 8-way, I'll give this a miss. (When Mario Kart looks far ahead of the flagship 3D Mario, you know shit has simply gone wrong. Actually, image quality aside, when Galaxy 2 looks much more impressive than 3D World, then shit certainly went wrong).

At least DKTF (dat music) & Wonderful 101 look awesome though. (Plus Wind Waker, re 2013 releases).

Has no one reported on this yes? I found this screenshot:

That is totally a subcon on the right of the dragon Yoshi beast!!! I think this really is a sequel to Super Mario Bros. 2!!!! Wart must be back, I'm so excited!

I don't know if it will be a sequel to SMB 2, there are a couple enemies returning from SMW also like the goomba with green shoes.

But I think Wart will be back as well =)

Wasn't that SMB3 though?

Only because there isn't anything else. NSMB wouldn't be considered a main entry if Galaxy was next to it, it would be considered a game with a handheld game engine up-ported to console (and it was). This is the same for 3D World, a handheld port.

I'm pretty sure it'd be considered a 2D sidescroller closer to a true Super Mario Bros game than Galaxy ever were.
You could never play with more than 1 player in the 3D games!
Glad they finally changed that.

This screenshot looks incredible. I don't have a 3DS but I thought Mario Land looked dope. Can't wait to play it.

Did you see the off-screen footage of the other stages? The music sounds wonderful. It's actual new compositions with natural instrumentation. It doesn't have the orchestral feel of Galaxy but it easily has the same quality.

All of these are wrong.

Galaxy was incredibly linear and all the free roaming levels were small. This is no different, it only had more bells and whistles.

All of these are wrong.

I don't know about the first 2 you bolded since we haven't seen enough, but the last one is DEFINITELY true. Galaxy games were platforming focused while 3D Land was even more platforming focused. This continues the trend of being platforming focused.

Can you send some links? I couldn't really hear the music in the videos I watched.

Do you guys know what's disappointed me the most about this? No power stars.

Green stars are replacing Star Coins, so there's that.

Camera control is pretty much wrong too because you have to tilt the controller in odd and uncomfortable ways to move it. Did the developers not realize the controller has two sticks?

I think that is due to the fact that you can't change the camera and press the Jump and Run buttons at the same time if you were going to change it with a stick. They probably do allow you to change the camera angle using the second stick, but you won't be able to fully control Mario.

Yes, because that was totally a problem in Sunshine.

Have you been able to play the demo? It does seem short sighted if you can only freely move the camera with gyro. Why wouldn't they add the second stick camera control?... I'm going to best buy to play it today, i'll let you know.

All of these are wrong.

That level looks bigger than the average Mario Galaxy level, it's DEFINITELY more detailed and more complex (the game is absolutely gorgeous in full resolution and 60fps), and since it's taking a lot of cues from 3D Land it's definitely more platforming-focused. You can tell the level design, at least all the level design we've seen, is very focused on platforming.

Do we know that the camera can't be controlled by the 2nd stick? You could look around with tilt in OoT3D but you could still use the stick if you wanted.

Is it possible that a new Sonic game looks better than a new Mario game on the same platform? Are they releasing around the same time too?

We haven't seen a single level from this game that is devoted exclusively to platforming. It's a lot of running around until you get to some platforming (look at 2-1 for example). Galaxy 2 had levels strictly devoted to platforming.

And Galaxy 2 had more running than 3D World. Don't try to convince yourself otherwise. Galaxy 2 definitely has less platforming than 3D World.

You're joking, right?

No I'm not. The secret levels were the most platforming focused it was.

Can you please rephrase because I have no idea what you are on about.

I played this game on the floor yesterday and thought it was a lot of fun. It also had some variation from 3DS SMB3D Land. Graphically I was not impressed at all but at least it was clean. I felt ripped off when I got Mario Wii U, because it had almost nothing over previous iterations other than higher resolution. At least this game had more interesting gameplay. I will look forward to playing this one at Xmas time.

I agree. I would have preferred a game with stars to complete the levels rather than flagpoles and timers. The speedrun thing is nice for the 2D games, but I prefer the 3D games to be completed at my own pace. It's not that the timers are usually a problem, but it's nice not having think of it at all.

So this game borrows from Super Mario Bros 2 for the playable cast, Super Mario Bros 3 for some power-ups, World in name, NSMB for co-op and 3D Land for style. I love it.

I would also consider adding Mario clash being part of this game with how the clear pipes are placed as well as being able to throw weapons through them.

I'm going through all the steps of being a Nintendo fan.

1. Denial - this can't be the new 3D Mario game! There has to be another flagship Mario!

2. Anger - pretty obvious

3. Bargaining - this will be acceptable if it has online multplayer

4. Depression - NO ONLINE NO GALAXY CALIBER MARIO, Nintendo as we know it is dead

5. Acceptance - Hey, I actually loved 3D Land on the 3DS and this game looks like great fun.

It's been confirmed that there's no online multiplayer? WTF NINTENDO. That was the one thing that would have made me excited for this game. It's really difficult for me to arrange 4-player sessions with the few Nintendo fans I know locally. Plus, the U has a strong online community, the Miiverse. Is Nintendo fucking stupid? This is 2013, for crying out loud!

Okay, now I'm in denial. Surely there must be online. Fully supported too, not just a few levels.

I will say it's nice to see Peach as a playable character again. Maybe if I play through the whole game as Peach it'll feel like a fresh experience instead of a bland retread. ( But let me guess: you can't use Peach in single player.)

mario 3d land had about 95 levels, this will likely have a similar number.

its just weird that coming in here, 5 levels have been shown and people saying ALL CREATIVITY GONE BLAH BLAH, even when new elements are shown off in every single level.

its fine.

this game will be praised to fuck upon release and everyone will love it ala 3D land and NSMBU

also. 2 mainline mario platformers in the first 13 months of a console launch... (3 if you include luigi DLC) thats kinda impressive

I don't know if I'd call NSMB a part of the mainline Mario series.

I really hope they allow us to use nunchucks. This is ridiculous lol. I really don't want to play an entire 3D Mario game with the gamepad. That thing is gigantic.

yes you can use nunchucks & pro controllers & wiimotes on own & gamepad

I don't know if I'd call NSMB a part of the mainline Mario series.

i would. just like super mario bros 3 & mario world before it.

and NSMBU has more creativity than both of those games put together. (i love mario 3 and world)

Get over yourself, music was even shittier in Sunshine and that's as main as it'll get.

I'll take Delfino Plaza or Bianco Hills over the new stuff any day.

I'm not ragging on the music out of spite or something. As someone who views music as a hugely important part of the game experience and a composer myself, it's disheartening to me that the music for the newer Mario titles seems to be getting such a lazy treatment.

Did you see the off-screen footage of the other stages? The music sounds wonderful. It's actual new compositions with natural instrumentation. It doesn't have the orchestral feel of Galaxy but it easily has the same quality.

Watched one off-screen vid that was linked to earlier, and while the quality of the samples sounded a bit better, the composition itself was still uninspired, and the loop was really short.

Looking at the demo, when you die, the Bowser face appears ala Galaxy, 64 and NSMB. If nothing else, the story is slightly more intriguing this time around.
