Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

So this game borrows from Super Mario Bros 2 for the playable cast, Super Mario Bros 3 for some power-ups, World in name, NSMB for co-op and 3D Land for style. I love it.
It borrows heavily from Super Mario World in terms of enemies.

(Chargin' Chuck, blaargs, chestnut goombas, and of course others used recently like the black fuzzies)

But yeah looks lke it'll also borrow story elements from SMB2

(playable Peach, subcon fairies, and possibly Wart)

Can you send some links? I couldn't really hear the music in the videos I watched.

I posted this one earlier. It reminds me of some of the more tropical elements of Super Mario Galaxy, it manages to mix some cool natural instruments in there like the horn.

Also, while this one is more conventional, the percussion feels rather heavy here. Reminds me of Sticker Star.

It's no Galaxy scale but it's clear that effort went into it to make the conventional tunes stand out and be more varied.

This game better be in 1080P, Nintendo.

I'm pretty sure that with most games shown they're targeting 1080p at 60fps.

I still dont understand why Nintendo can't make an online main series mario game. Mario Kart has it so why not this? it's been a couple of years since I've actually played local multiplayer with friends.

I'll take Delfino Plaza or Bianco Hills over the new stuff any day.

I'm not ragging on the music out of spite or something. As someone who views music as a hugely important part of the game experience and a composer myself, it's disheartening to me that the music for the newer Mario titles seems to be getting such a lazy treatment.

I'd take the blandness incarnate of the overworld theme of Windwaker over anything from Sunshine seriously.
Granted Delfino plaza was less horrible than the rest but come on, not even NSMB is as forgettable as that one.
Sunshine is really the deepest point Mario could ever reach, gimmicky mechanics, lazy designs all over the place and not even good music.
So far 3D World is really better.
and the Galaxy games are unplayable after playing the NSMB games, really boring.
At least 3D Land has something over the over 3D games, it's not as fuckingly boring.

Wait, does this game genuinely not use the stick for movement on the controllers that support it?

You're kidding, right?

I actually like the Ocean theme, but sure, Wind Waker had much better music all around.

And... that's where I bow out of this discussion.

I'm really speaking of that overworld theme I despise, the OST is fantastic.
Same goes for SS, there's some awesome tune in that game.

I love the SMG games, the music is even in my ipod in constant rotation.
But that's the closest I'll ever go to replaying them :/
I wish my SNES wasn't so far I wanna replay Yoshi's Island though
3DL I actually restarted a save just recently! and I always launch a few NSMB game here and then (especially U thanks to the challenges).
In Galaxy there were some alternate routes but in G2, there's so little it's getting boring and the 2nd world is ungodly boring too.

Probably does, but in 8 direction only, in order to accommodate the lowest common denominator (bare Wiimote). The whole level design seems to revolve around that.

Right then.

Fuck Nintendo. If they can't be bothered to make a game that actually takes advantage of their own fucking controller, they can fuck off. I'll be dodging this unless reviews are fucking sparkling.

Ridiculous.... Anyone who has a freaking wiimote has a nunchuk. If not than maybe they should freaking throw a damn wiimote+ninchuk into the box. Nintendo's controller mess is really annoying

They can, it's just that it would affect gameplay quality. Mario Kart has more wiggle room because they cheat with it. In Mario Kart, if there is lag, the AI guesses where the other player(s) should be and corrects once it gets more data. A platformer is a lot more twitch than that, so lag would be a lot more apparent. I imagine Nintendo is worried that if they made an online mode and it had lag, people would call the game bad despite having perfectly fine offline modes. I really wish they would just go ahead and do it, but I can sorta see why they would be hesitant to add to the negative impressions of a game they're making. It's a shame cuz that 4 player looks so awesome.

I've gotten over the initial shock, and yeah the game looks good.

It looks really fun, and a co-op 3D Mario title has been sorely missing all these years.

However, I do still hope for a brand new direction with 3D Mario later in the Wii U's life.

Edit: No online is horrible though, there's absolutely no good reason for it.

I don't think with a 3D platformer lag is as much of an issue since it doesn't require as much precision as with 2D platformers I understand.

Nah, 3D Land uses 8 direction only also. It's designed that way to make it easier to control.

I'm gonna try out the Gamepad play today, but I can say with certainty that the 8-directional shit did not make it more playable on the d-pad.

From what I have played, this game controls terribly. I'm willing to put in more time to see, but this is the most disappointed I think I could possibly feel in a Nintendo product, and not just because it didn't wow me technically. Bad controls in a Mario game should absolutely never happen ever.

Really? The Wii U is all about the gamepad, and the pro controllers. Focusing on last gen for the movement isn't good. At least when using analog sticks, you should be able to move in 360 degrees.

I take that.

Still, I bet that when a proper single player 3D Mario comes to the Wii U, it will be full 360º.

This is the Four Swords of the 3D Mario series.

Yeah, but I have four Wiimotes, and only two nunchucks.

Hint: it's not 8-way to accommodate the Wiimote (3DS has a fully analog controller and that was 8-way too)

And Galaxy 2 had more running than 3D World. Don't try to convince yourself otherwise. Galaxy 2 definitely has less platforming than 3D World.

No I'm not. The secret levels were the most platforming focused it was.

And pretty much every level in the game like Bianco Hills and Ricco Harbon (and massive series of narrow platforms). ?

I'm fine with this game but I would be lying if I didn't say I think Koizumi should be given the reins over Mario platformers in the foreseeable future.

This game could've been on the first Wii and the GameCube. Hell, Super Mario Sunshine and even Super Mario 64 are more advanced games than this. And I'm talking gameplay before I get pounced on for being a graphics whore.

We expected to see a full fledged Mario game at E3. This was such a disappointment.

They confirmed you can use the pro controller.

When? When I asked them directly about it, they seemed a little dismayed that I asked, and said that they were "working on it." That doesn't sound like confirmation to me, though it had better be in there, or this game just is unplayable.

To me Mario 3D World is the game that would have logically fit between Super Mario World and Super Mario 64. It really seems like Nintendo was trying to be ambitious during the GameCube years and then intentionally took a step back as the technology advanced. This could have been for financial reasons, accessibility or whatever, but I'm not liking it.

The developers did say they think of 3D World as the ultimate culmination of ALL the Mario games. If that's the case, I hope we can put this throw-back style of Mario to bed moving forward. I want them to feel they accomplished their goals and are now set on making a deep experience for the next one.

I want an open world 3D Mario game again, like 64 and Sunshine. Galaxy 1 and 2 were incredible, but seriously, I'm tired of seeing linear Mario games.

Not only that, but this actually feels like a step backwards. Considering the abundance of New Super Mario games in recent years, Nintendo really needed something innovative, along the same lines as Galaxy.

I'm sure this will be fun, but Mario games simply aren't groundbreaking anymore.

Guys, do me a solid and stop bringing up Sunshine.

That game is crap.

not actual crap, just very sub-par for a Mario game

What controller did you use when playing the game?

And I was just starting to think you were cool.
I updated my post to be more fair about it. I enjoyed it, but was ultimately so frustrated by the game's design that it was maybe the only Mario game I played so many hours and still didn't bother to 100%'d. Fucking blue coins IIRC.

Also, it's not right that Mario should be powered-up almost 100% of the time with a jetpack.

I was talking about in general. 8-directional movement just seems to control easier. D-Pad controls sound awful. It supports other controllers too AFAIK. It isn't designed to accommodate for D-Pad controls is what I'm saying since someone was saying that was the reason.

Ehhh, I can agree with the blue coin stuff. FLUDD was at least something new and interesting though. Better than turning into a fucking cat and climbing walls, mind you.

Just give me a console with a Wavebird 2.0 that works with every game :(
I'm back to depression.

Gelato Beach, Seriena Beach, the Hotel, the Theme park and the top portion of Pianta village are all rather 'flat' for a mario game.
Thats... a pretty solid chunk of the game

I disagree. I played the ever-loving ass out of that game. Still one of the best platformers to date imo. True, it lacked in thematic variety, but made up for in everything else (aside from some throwaway musical numbers).

Show me proof the game is controlled in 8 directions, because so far I've seen none. All I'm seeing is people jumping to conclusions. A quick google search also tells me a rep said Pro controller support will be there, but reps aren't very trustworthy.

I'll check it out today and let you know. The reps told me that they were "working" on Pro Controller support, which isn't as great of a confirmation as I would've liked to have heard, but as long as it makes it in there in the end, I suppose...

That will only be used for 1 or 2 shine sprites. The platforming was quite good in Sunshine when you had to do platforming, but most of the time there was little to no platforming required.

It seems to play in the same sense as 3D Land so I think it is safe to go to the conclusion it is controlled in 8-directions. Though personally I have no problem with it since 3D Land controlled nicely.

Nope. This is Mario now. Say goodbye to all the Sunshines and Galaxies and say hello to all the 3D Lands and New Super Mario Bros. It's pretty obvious this is what they want from the franchise. Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine were missteps.

These melodramatic posts are getting tiring to read. You make it sound like 3D Land is a bad game and that we will only see 3D Land style games in the future.
