Metal Gear Solid V (PS3/360/PS4/XBO/Maybe PC) - Extended 9 minute E3 trailer

Gamersyde will come through with a direct-feed. Believe.

BlimBlim don't let me down, please.

Ok I'll shut my mouth and go enjoy all the titles my team has won these past years.

I enjoyed that more than I should have.

I think you just figured out the target audience for MGS games. :(

Why read Homer's Odyssey when you can watch Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief?

Well, would either of you at least be interested in what I found?

I sourced it a few pages back (mostly Wiki pages and Book review articles), but here's the quick and dirty.

-Skull Face is a series of short stories written by author Robert. E. Howard

-Skull Face stars Steve Costigan

-This is not the same recurring character "Sailor" Steve Costigan from Howard's other, more popular series

-Sailor Steve is a lot more light and fun than the Steve Coistgan character found in Skull Face, who is a lot
darker and more torn as a character; hooked on drugs, does a lot of shady things

-Sailor Steve is a master at fighting (pugilist)

-Skull Face deals with many racial issues

-Sailor Steve Costigan's first appearance was in Howard's The Pit of the Serpent

-Howard's mother fell into a deep coma that she was not expected to return from

Anyone else diving in head first into this series for the first time with part 5? I'm just gonna YOLO it and belly flop right into the 5th game and have my mind blown and full of 'wtf is happening'.

I'm not familiar with that specific material, so I can't really say if I feel there are any strong connections. But having said that, Howard is an oldschool pulp horror/fantasy writer, and that's exactly the sort of material Kojima has always been very much inspired by for his characters and backstories, so I wouldn't be surprised one bit if there is indeed a connection.

Especially when it comes to Snake having crazy visions, and the weird enemies in the trailer called the ones who "Don't Exist" and so on, I think that's definitely in line with the part of Kojima's taste for the strange. Kinda like the bosses in MGS3, the sentient arm stuff in MGS2 and 4, and the prophecy in MPO.

Definitely a nice find. :)

Also, this one's a bit more basic, but I found something I remembered learning about Code Talkers from school interesting. Code Talkers were a famous group of people the USA used during WWI and WW2 to code and decode their messages, usually in Native American languages. Choctaws, for instance, were famous for their work in WWI.

Wikipedia "Choctaws in training in World War I for coded radio and telephone transmissions." said:

How are people seeing a Steve Job comparison (with very, very little evidence or anything to go off of; not saying there couldn't be though) that seems fine, but when I bring up a book named Skull Face with racial issues by an author that has a character of the exact same name in two different series (that character's initials are SS), and who's mother fell into a long-term coma that she wasn't expected to wake up from, there's no correlation or interest?

Because Steve Jobs is a pop cultural icon, whereas what you're talking about is more obscure? I don't mean to downplay your post, but that's just how it is.

I edited my post with a bigger picture of Emmerich, btw. The previous picture was too small to make out the resemblance. Then again, I guess you could argue that the look that Emmerich and Jobs share was a common look in the '80s.

EDIT: Ah, it's a Robert E. Howard tale. That seems right up Kojima's alley.

Yeah, John Woo directed a movie based on that. The movie was bad though. :P

Never saw that, but someone actually mentioned it before too. (they said it was awful as well!)

I really love all these interesting stuff that you can find in the games. Kojima reminds me of Tarantino when it comes to referencing semi-obscure stuff that you have to dig down a little deeper for. I love that kind of stuff.

I wasn't trying to dismiss your post, I think you could be right. I just found it a little frustrating that I did a some research on it, and I just kept finding more and more weird correlations and nobody seemed to be interested before. Wasn't trying to say ill of you or your correlation though, so I'm sorry if it came off that way.

Holy crap. I just realized who Emmerich reminds me of.

The time period is just right too (1984, around the time when Jobs looked like this, and also the year the first Macintosh was released). An intentional homage?
Even the subtitle, "A technocrat who stands his ground", makes sense. Steve Jobs was notoriously stubborn.

Edit: Bigger pic of Emmerich now.

Can someone tell me if they have changed the voice actor for Emmerich? I sincerely hope so.

Thank you!

Oooh, nice. "A wise man denied his homeland". Makes total sense.

But Hayter didn't voice Big Boss in
MGS4
. It isn't his character, as Solid Snake is undoubtedly his character.

Hayter voiced Big Boss in PW, even when he officially accepted the title at the end and even after that.

Regardless, even though the voice is weird - it feels like Big Boss has been combined with Jack Bauer, which is awesome heh :p

@HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN

Felt like fighting alone&unassisted, surrounded by enemies on all sides to dev hi-end game in Japan today. But fellows like me exist at E3.

Peace Walker was fantastic. Clearly built for PSP, though. I personally love getting to the cutscenes. That's what I'm most excited about; the story and how it's told in the game. Gameplay has always been fun in the series, but I find myself always getting -most- excited for the scenes.
People aren't you. People play games for different reasons, and get different things out of games.

Hayter sounded like Old Snake in PW which was a bit annoying. I am glad Kojima took this decision and hired Kiefer Sutherland because it seemed to me that David was having a hard time breaking away from Old Snake's voice.

The guy Snake is helping in the end with one arm... is that Grey Fox?

Do you think we will see a child version of Raiden. As a child soldier in outer heaven? It would fit the timeline. It would be strange but also make sense if some of Raidens affection for Snake(MGS2) perhaps was based on him interacting with BB when he was a child.

One-armed-one-legged guy at the end was Miller.

If the game only goes as far as 1985, Raiden will not be seen, as he would only be a baby/small child.

Imagine if Gray Fox was aware of Revolver Ocelot's past,
and slicing off his arm was reminding him where he came from, working with Big Boss and Kaz
.

The trailer has got me hyped so I'm thinking of actually playing Peace Walker HD. However, I've heard it was very hard if you don't play co-op, especially with the bosses.

Is that true?

Damn, full circle. He's most likely going to be in this game.

No it's not very hard on your own. I played the entire game without co-op.

Well playing co-op is more fun but you can still complete it alone. It's MGS, you can finish it alone like any other MGS.

Same here...seems like Peace Walker is a MUST play now to completely understand MGSV. Have the HD Collection. Will finish by the end of the week.

I also figured out who Code Talker probably is thanks to the previous definition of Code Talkers that was given.

If Code Talker is indeed Indian, Raven is his grandson or son most likely. That info above also suggests Raven might be in MGS V.

Definition of a Code Talker: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_talker

Ugh I hope not, the MGS universe is already way too small. Otacon's dad being involved in the prequels is bad enough.

Well, it kinda reminded me of a more experienced MGS3 voice most of the time. Didn't feel much like MGS4 to me. But I dunno. Maybe it was. Really loved his voice in PW.

I'm a bit confused since I've had to work crazy hours lately and haven't had time to keep up. Ground Zeroes is coming up later this year and is basically a prologue of sorts for this, the 'real' MGSV?

This trailer... It's amazing. It seems to do what MGS4 sorta tried to do with the semi-open stages. But MGS4 was such a huge disappointment to me, I'm still cautious. This series and trailers... man, it's a chequered history. I really hope Kojima and team pull this off. Sandbox seems to be the magic word for the upcoming gen - could be the new direction the series needs.

You can jump over railings in MGS3 :D

Well that doesn't count LOL. I meant like platform jump :P

Groundzeros is the opening the mgsV. It's like MGS3 opening "The virtuous mission". And i don't know what people are complaining for. Keifer is now Big boss and Hayter is solid snake. As it should be

Torture of a half-naked female character is such great imagery in a medium already riddled with problems when it comes to gender representation.

This is frankly stupid.

Uh, ok.

Big Boss has been interrogated/tortured bare-chested. More than once. Why is that not a problem, but when it's a half naked woman it is?

Heck, this happened.

Fucking vulgar(!)

It's not like that was presented as a positive thing in any way, or like there are only women being tortured half-naked in that trailer, or the series as a whole. This is frankly a non-issue.
