Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

It wasn't Galaxy-like in its mindblowing-ness, but "multiplayer and transparent pipes" is reductive.

I'm just disappointed 3D World is clearly derivative of a formula, presentation, and style we've already seen elsewhere. Where we went Super Mario Galaxy -> Super Mario Galaxy 2, this is very much Super Mario 3D Land -> Super Mario 3D World. Or as someone else put it, like New Super Mario Bros. -> New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy each headlined the 3D Mario platforming formula for their respective systems, and each overhauled numerous nuances in the presentation and design. Mario went to a different world, had access to different tools, under a different design direction. Each game built upon a new fundamental mechanic for the 3D platforming formula, setting itself apart from its predecessors, borderlining on a stand alone experience. Each of those three games does its own thing, in its own way, and aims not to be a successor or sequel to the previous generations.

Super Mario 3D World is the exact opposite. It's a successor to 3D Land. It's introducing a number of new mechanics, and 3D multiplayer is a big deal, but it's still an evolution of something we've already seen before and as a consequence carries across familiarity.

I can see exactly where Nintendo's mind was drifting in order to come up with this, and I can see why it makes sense to them. But for me it's a lazy, uninteresting direction almost completely devoid of surprise, and that instant impression of an original, bold vision. As a result it lands in a similar hotpot to New Super Luigi U. That is to say it will be fun and I'll get it eventually, but I feel zero pressure to get it at launch due to the similarities to predecessors. Multiplayer focus doesn't help matters as I have nobody really to play a 3D multiplayer platformer with.

3D World will wait while I play more appealing games elsewhere.

Why don't you mention 3D Land up there EC? I would say it is as much of an evolution of Mario as 64, Sunshine to a lesser extent, and Galaxy.

Do you lose the cat suit if you're hit? Because that could constrain the ability to design levels around it if you're still expected to be able to finish the level even after taking a hit and losing your suit.

You would still be able to finish the level. There are still platforms you can go on to go upwards. The catsuit makes traversing easier and finding secrets.

"Devoid of surprise" is the word alright. This will be good, and from the impressions it's kind of like the NSMB series where "I played it, it's actually good!" but this won't ever top the impressions we got when we saw Mario blasting off to space.

Uh, no. 64 introduced 3D platforming for the first time to Mario with large-scale levels, Sunshine had the F.L.U.D.D and mechanics based around it and Galaxy, gravity-based platforming in fucking space.

This is just 3D Land on steroids, from what we've seen, it's as different from 3D Land as NSMBU is from NSMB Wii. It's not nearly as innovative or unique as what we've come to expect from 3D Mario games.

I'd like to think I could explain it this well, but I'm too distraught by the direction of the game to be this coherent.

I figured there'd be no way that Nintendo could disappoint me this E3. Even if all they showed was Mario 3D, Kart, and Smash, they'd have it in the bag. There's no way a 3D Mario game could be disappointing, since it is/was my favorite series in gaming. Each console game has been amazing and creative, and Kart will be there for the Winter season. 3D World is a sucker punch.

Got into the thread looking for new videos of the game, spend 15 minutes watching linked Mario Galaxy videos, now im back to being dissapointed.

Associating this with 3D Land was their biggest mistake. It twisted everyone's expectations.

Even if it didn't have the title similarities comparisons would be drawn, if just for the way worlds look to be designed, and the camera perspective.

Yeah, that's true. I don't know if it was as much of an evolution, but it was at the very least a game clearly built under its own directive for the 3DS. It's got a look, charm, and design philosophy unique to that specific platform, so you don't go and think "oh this is just a watered down 64/Galaxy".

My overall thoughts post E3 on this title as well as Nintendo as a company is lazy and safe. They know Nintendo fans will eat up anything they serve. Therefore in my eyes this game is unacceptable. It's time for Nintendo fans to hold Nintendo to a higher standard. This is NOT the new Mario Nintendo fans wanted.
Anyone that says otherwise is lying to themselves.

It's a new Mario game.
With multiplayer.
With characters with different abilities.
With new powerups and mechanics.
With a very clean look.
Based on 3D Land.

This is exactly what I wanted. I understand that I may be in the minority on GAF based on that criteria, but to say that this is unacceptable because it's a followup to a well-received handheld title is a bit absurd.

It's the new Mario I wanted. I've never really enjoyed 3D mario games and would choose 2D Mario platformers over them any day. This game looks perfect for my tastes and it's sad that people are choosing to dislike it not because it's a bad game but because it isn't Galaxy 3.

This condescending attitude - "You people. I don't like those games. You all stop buying them. Just because you want them."

The bolded is an assumption you can't support. Nintendo fans spoke - they bought Mario 3D Land at a greater adoption rate than Mario Galaxy, on the whole. And opinions on the direction for 3D Mario have been pretty cleanly divided after people tried it. Plenty liked this style of game better than Galaxy, or Sunshine.

We saw this same argument when 2D Mario came back and people who didn't like 2D games got on a high horse. When 2D Mario started selling like holy hell, out came the "you people stop buying and liking those games right now. You're part of the problem."

I shouldn't have said evolution, meant to say direction. I feel it was as unique of a direction as Galaxy and 64 and deserves a mention more than Sunshine.

note the gyro animation in the top-right. that's not how the camera normally is.

You can use the right stick too.

Looking forward to this because Super Mario Bros. 2 is my favorite 2D Mario game. Hoping for Wart to show up in the end :)

I wasn't implying a new galaxy. My point is 3D land has it's spot, galaxy has it's spot. Let those titles shine on their own. I enjoy/ love mario games but I as well as many others want change. Mario neighborhood, mario villages just something different. Regurgitation describes Nintendo's new game making model. I was excited to see the new mario pre E3. Now that it's here it looks typical.

Did you feel this way about Galaxy 2? Was it less fun because it was a sequel?

It's being made by a team that's only made excellent games. This too, in all likelihood, will be excellent. Chill.

I´ll put in a good saying I first heard on Classic Game Room´s review of NSMBU

"This is like a McDonalds cheeseburger, it´s concistent and why you go to McDonalds in the firstplace to get a cheeseburger. Occasionally you may experiment with their menu and try something fancier, like pancakes, but you always come back for cheeseburgers"

Everyone seem to wish that Nintendo stops being Nintendo and do something "different" but that´s excactly what they do, but not in the way we might expect or hope they would.

Just putting it out there, everyone has their right to their own opinion.

This was a big hit at my state's Best Buy event, and for good reason!

For those of you that aren't so big on local multiplayer, you're probably better off lowering your expectations. But if you have people to play this game with, goddamn, it's a lot of fun. The level design is really entertaining -- in particular, one level involved everyone riding on the back of some water-riding creature, controlling it cooperatively -- and there are lots of neat touches to make it subtly competitive. The crowd got just as into it as those playing on most levels.

I had a lot of trepidation from the Direct reveal, but seeing it in action turned me from a skeptic to a day-one purchaser.

Peach is almost too slow, I kept feeling like I was struggling to keep on-screen with everyone else, even though I was playing pretty well. Had to keep bubbling.

Had a nice group playing, we knew when to bubble, and not one of us died on 6-5 until someone jumped off a ledge by the end flagpole.

Being able to let yourself out of bubbles is very nice, and the Cat Suit changes your controls so much, it feels very fresh and fun.

I played it at Best Buy today and here are my short impressions:

First of all, I was already in a downer mood because they would only let me and my friend play one level because there were a ton of people, even though we got there like two hours early. Whatever, I was just excited to play the new Mario game! So after waiting, we could see by the demos that they were going by pretty fast, so my friend and I agreed to take the level slow and easy and take our sweet time.

So we get pulled up and got paired with two other guys, and I ended up getting the Wii U controller. I don't have a Wii U so I'm not exactly comfortable with it, but it's surprisingly light and comfy so I didn't mind. The game starts and I'm Mario, my friend is Peach, and the other two guys are Toad and Luigi. We choose the third level and everything seems to be going smooth until we get to the clouds and start hopping.

With all of the clouds and the characters I could not see Mario on the Gamepad's screen as the camera began panning out. It turned out that my friend for some reason was speeding through the level and picking up all of the power ups, and because of that, the rest of us kept going off screen and turning into bubbles which was incredibly annoying. Throughout the level I got hit and shrunk and the guy who played Luigi got shrunk too and with all of the chaos going around I could hardly tell who was who. I also for some reason kept trying to shake the gamepad due to my Mario Galaxy habits, but it didn't do anything and my jumps were mistimed because I kept thinking I could get another jump lol So yeah, if you're playing multiplayer with the game pad, it kinda sucks.

Before I knew it, the level was over and the only reward I got was third place and a foam Luigi hat. Still, I know I sound overwhelmingly negative, I had fun and bias aside, it was good and I wanted more.

Do I think it's worth buying a Wii U over? Absolutely not. Although it takes place in a 3D space and is in HD, your mind forgets about the HD for awhile and it's just as much fun as NSMB Wii. However, the fact that it's only "just as much fun" means that I can go to NSMB Wii and get the same satisfaction. It's nothing revolutionary and I hate that. I'm still not convinced on buying a Wii U, and this is coming from someone who has had every Nintendo console besides the NES.

Does it get the people movin though?

My excite levels have not really moved since the console launched.

Nintendo have lost the charm and fascination that grabbed me as a kid and young adult.

Its seen in glimpses here and there but Ive come to expect the meh level from this company more and more each year/console cycle.

They make money on their moneyhats though so who am I to complain.

A bit. People intermittently shouted to get the power ups and whatnot, but the other two guys on my team were too busy yelling, "You guys are going too fast!" My friend's a bit of an asshole lol but that's the name of the game.

I think what might be a big problem is this particular trailer. If the next trailer takes the focus away from co-op and the cat power-up and adds some orchestrated music I think all the naysayers may rethink their derision.

"Everyone" doesn't want Nintendo to stop being Nintendo. I want Nintendo to be Nintendo. But I want them to be the Nintendo that made Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy. The one that experimented and created a new genre with Mario in Super Mario Kart. I don't want them to be the Nintendo that cranks out unimaginative New Super Mario Bros. games that play the exact same way because they sell well.

Mario Galaxy 2 should have been DLC. M.o.re planet pack. Not it's own game. I would like to reiterate I will eventually buy this title but I feel thoroughly disappointed with the reveal. I do not speak for all Nintendo fans but I would definitely like to see a poll of it Mario fans are content with this new entry or if they wanted something different from the franchise. It's almost like Nintendo is trying to do the capcom street fighter thing. Super street fighter turbo, hyper, extreme, faster with mario. As for the adoption and attachment rates it is once again settling. If a console only has one good game at launch that title will sell large numbers. Not a "hater" just expected more.

It's not a poll, but the game ranked pretty highly in the NeoGAF E3 Disappointments thread:

There are plenty of 2D linear Marios that you can choose from. Those of us that like the 3D versions get one good shot every few years and they completely whiffed it.

Another problem I have is that the levels look strangely empty. Lot's of empty space, only a few enemies just sort of standing around. It just looks like something is missing...

This game looks fun as hell. At the end of the day I think we should all agree that this choice was better rather than having another Galaxy game.

Mario 64 and Galaxy could not be more different. The former is open world and the latter is mostly linear (with a few levels one could maybe call "open world"). Also, was Galaxy 2 unimaginative? There's little reason to think that this game will be too, unless you take the few levels shown in the trailer as the entire game.

Just watched the 3D Land and 3D World trailers back to back.

3D Land looks more exciting. (Probably because it's 1 player focused, but I noticed in 3D World the flip-switches are substantially bigger to accommodate 4 players....oh well. Here's hoping they do a HD re-release of Galaxy 1 & 2).

Did you feel this way about Galaxy 2? Was it less fun because it was a sequel?

Galaxy 2 is a bad example, because the first one already has been the new milestone of the hardware. This game will have fun levels and all, but as it is now, will remain underwhelming as fuck, since it feels way too safe and uninspired, as measured by previous entries. 3D Land was the perfect title for the 3DS, but then they should have moved on and made something new with this completely new gen of hardware. Instead we're getting some leftovers from the development of a handheld title, that look like nothing special. It doesn't even feel like the natural evolution of the series, but Iwata deciding to give this into order, just because they finally got some 2D fans into playing 3D Land in Japan and multiplayer has already worked wonders for those.
It's a disgrace to one of the greatest series in the industry, that has been known for milestones and showcase titles tailored for each platform. Even some rushed game like Sunshine at least tried to be something new and special. This game even has several elements that feel completely nonsensical on the WiiU and randomly taken out of another 3DS development (including the goddamn title).

Like many Nintendo games of late, I believe that excitement will build toward release as more is revealed.

Honestly Sonic Lost World looks way more interesting. I don't doubt this will be a fun game, but it feels very uninspired. I remember being pee pants excited when I saw Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. And each of those games delivered on that hype...this one?? It looks fun, but man it just doesn't look like they even tried to be ambitious with the project.

There's a lot about this game we haven't seen, this is just a demo. I'll reserve my judgment until it's out.
What I've seen of it looks ideal but I guess I'm one of the few Mario fans that don't enjoy the 3D games.

Unfortunately, I think taking away the 'focus on co-op' takes away a large part of what makes the game special. It's pretty clear that the levels are designed with a heavy emphasis on cooperative/competitive interactions.

hell no.

A sequel and bigger better Galaxy aka Mario Universe but no one wants this at least on the Wii U...
