Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
It wasn't Galaxy-like in its mindblowing-ness, but "multiplayer and transparent pipes" is reductive.
I'm just disappointed 3D World is clearly derivative of a formula, presentation, and style we've already seen elsewhere. Where we went Super Mario Galaxy -> Super Mario Galaxy 2, this is very much Super Mario 3D Land -> Super Mario 3D World. Or as someone else put it, like New Super Mario Bros. -> New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy each headlined the 3D Mario platforming formula for their respective systems, and each overhauled numerous nuances in the presentation and design. Mario went to a different world, had access to different tools, under a different design direction. Each game built upon a new fundamental mechanic for the 3D platforming formula, setting itself apart from its predecessors, borderlining on a stand alone experience. Each of those three games does its own thing, in its own way, and aims not to be a successor or sequel to the previous generations.
Super Mario 3D World is the exact opposite. It's a successor to 3D Land. It's introducing a number of new mechanics, and 3D multiplayer is a big deal, but it's still an evolution of something we've already seen before and as a consequence carries across familiarity.
I can see exactly where Nintendo's mind was drifting in order to come up with this, and I can see why it makes sense to them. But for me it's a lazy, uninteresting direction almost completely devoid of surprise, and that instant impression of an original, bold vision. As a result it lands in a similar hotpot to New Super Luigi U. That is to say it will be fun and I'll get it eventually, but I feel zero pressure to get it at launch due to the similarities to predecessors. Multiplayer focus doesn't help matters as I have nobody really to play a 3D multiplayer platformer with.
3D World will wait while I play more appealing games elsewhere.
