Is this even realistic? Were there light-skinned slaves back then?

never go full retard bro. lol

actually reading the cast listing makes me want to see this. Seem like this will be an interesting probably polarizing movie .

Holy mother of shit, for the past 20+ years I thought Mariah Carey was full-on white.

PS: I hope full-on white is not an offensive term.

hahaahahahahhaahahahahhahahahaha

Anyways, I don't even care tbh. Doesn't bother me.

Same, my family is from Mississippi. We have old old people that are very bright skinned. I have cousins that could be questionably white. I know a black couple with white looking twins like some albino thing happened but not fully. We're all mixed up.

Didn't you have to be 1/16th black back then to be considered black?
Are you referring to Plessy v Fergusen, which came years after slavery and had to do with segregation (specifically on rail cars)?

You know...Slavemasters did rape their slaves, so having a light skinned slave isn't out of hte question.
Yes but they generally worked in the house, not out in the fields.
If you think about it, it makes sense that slaveowners would give preferential treatment to their sons and daughters...

In this thread: Posters realize slaves were raped and sometimes bore light skinned children.

I do agree it's kind of odd that a pretty light-skinned girl is working the fields.. but at the same time it's not utterly ridiculous to believe this has happened on plantations.

sorry, but Mariah would not have been a field slave.

she would have been a

house slave.

It is extraordinarily unlikely that someone of Mariah's complexion would have been a field slave. Unlikely enough to make it difficult to suspend disbelief.

WTF, i always thought MC is half Hispanic.

she's half hispanic and half irish. she is also half black and half white.

generally isn't always or anywhere near close to that. plus, working in the fields was used as punishment too.

I wouldn't say that. Masta might have gotten tired of her or Misses Masta might have raised hell.

My only addendum was going to be if she was in regular rebellion. Her default place would have been in the house.

unlikely? yes. impossible? no. not even close.
If she ends up there after trying to whoop massa's ass, sure. If she starts off there with no reason given other than the fact that she's a slave like everybody else...nope.

No, these kids are.

Can work is she is half black slave like these kids.
Damn. Would have never even guessed they were mixed had I not been told...

eh... I agree that the likelihood of this occurring would be extremely rare. But I don't think it's such a stretch that it's almost unimaginable.

You think it's crazy that if a plantation owner needed some extra hands because of a lack of field workers or because they needed a job done more quickly they wouldn't toss a Mariah or Halle's pretty asses in the fields with the quickness? Because I can definitely see that happening.

The black slaves hated the half or less slaves because the lighter slaves would be their foremen, and lash them.

It's interesting that some people don't realize how prevalent slave rape and mixed race children were, and how it lead to the entire issue of skin tone and desirability/status in the black community afterwards.

Most of us in the black community have some white blood somewhere in the family.

THIS. I'm african and the first thing i noticed when i came to the states is how black i was compared to the african american community.

She's always acknowledged that she was part black.

Now...if they had her playing say, Harriet Tubman, I'd be upset, as that would be a case of typical Hollywood whitewashing (See Saldana in that Nina Simone flick). This looks like she's just playing one of many, doubt her part is too big, especially considering the cast.

Is this even realistic? Were there light-skinned slaves back then? Because in those days, it was a blessing in disguise to be able to pass for white.

It totally contradicts history, yeah. Someone as light-skinned as Mariah would've been a house slave; A maid or a nanny.

I mean, she's waaaaaaaay too light to work in a field.

Don't see what's so funny. She's a good actress.

She was nominated for and won more awards for her role in Precious than your thirsty fave ever did.

Respect.

I swear to God if you PopGAF hoes get another perfectly good thread closed I'm gonna scream. We could have had a smashing #Beautiful video thread but you guys had to come in talking code and alienating everybody.

Culture/Ethnicity vs. Race

Excuse you?

First of all, this is a thread created by a PopGAF poster.

Second, my #Beautiful thread was closed not because of PopGAF "talking in code," but because StraightGAF was attempting to turn it into another Hot Woman Thread.

Simmer.
