Tom Clancy's The Division - Ubisoft + Massive, MMO Open World TPS RPG

Thanks mate.

Unfortunately they go on about the story, which i barely give a shit about, but don't clarify how the game works.

It's an always online open world RPG, and they kind of clarified just the online part of it.
How does the open world work?

It's either going to be a city loaded entirely at once or seperate zones that are a mix of safe areas, pve/pvp, and full on pvp.

Why are they calling it an RPG (looks like a shooter, to me) and what's the objective in the game? Basically, what will you be doing for 90% of the time?

It's an RPG first from what the devs have said. You have different weapons, lots of skill choices and talent points to distribute. A shooter is one of the only ways to make an RPG that isn't entirely based around math. Math based combat systems lead to people finding the absolute most efficient way to do everything and it really ruins any sense of experimentation. Since a shooter is entirely about skill you get less of the I must be as efficient as possible otherwise I can't do anything mentality that plagues many RPGs.

Are there missions and quests giver?

Not really, from what we can see and the devs have said, everything is dynamic and emergent where things happen and you react. It's very much a sandbox. An example is at one point they were looking down at those sewers which were glowing orange and the devs said that was an area with group content. Then the gun shots rang out and they headed to the police station. Now they could have ignored the police station entirely and someone else could have come along and did that as well as got the loot. So it becomes a choice of what you want to do and when, it's not using a go from point a to point b questing system.

Are there no combat hubs? Or maybe you just scavenge around the city? Is the city fully open or divided in sections? Are there classes? Can you create a character, or do you select one? Etc Etc..

As it is a sandbox you will scavange the city for supplies and loot. As for classes they said no there's no classes but you change out your loadout based on what you're doing and your group composition rather than being forced into specific roles because of the class you chose.

Man if the entire city is explorable and scavangeable, I will shit bricks. This game is goddamned mindblowing visually. The texture work... holy shit.

Not sure how much help I'll be (I'm a military vet) but this game is a total SPLOOSH for me.

I PM'd Amir0x, but throw me on the GAF team list as well.

Shit, looking at my Trophies is embarrassing. I've been a 360 gamer this entire gen, but I'm jumping ship.

The possibilities this game offers is blowing my mind. Really hope it delivers.

Thanks for the answers.
I still don't have 100% clear what the overall objective in the game is.

Like, in GTA you start and you do the missions until the credits roll, and in the middle you can do side stuff.
In Skyrim you start and you do the mainline quests until the credits roll, same as GTA, a bit more open ended.

In something like DayZ, you are online, so it's all based on emergent gameplay and there are no defined missions (in the beta, anyway).

This is more like.. Destiny? Though that one has missions, too.

This seems unlikely. And of course the game could run on PC! lol

Its not about raw power, its about system bandwidth.
Getting the data into the frame. Most PCs have 1GB oder GDDR5, some have 2Gigs, very few have more. 2 might just not be enough to display that much details.
You can easily "create" the data, but you just can't get it in the frames because the system bandwidth isn't high enough.

This game looks fantastic but, can someone please explain me how is it gonna work? I'm not sure I get the objective of the game given the MMO nature of it.

When is this game supposed to come out? Also that interview video confirmed dedicated servers for this game :D

2014 is all they're saying atm...

Just listened to how they tie loot drops to the pvp... it's pretty cool.

You have to extract (with the flare) to bank your loot pickups, but when you shoot the flare, it pings you on the map to all the players around. If they can kill you before the timer expires and you extract, they can take your loot.

That is actually really fucking cool.

Seems like missions are dynamic and emergent. There are kind of traditional missions (the tunnel/underground the team bypasses) and dynamic missions (the police station) and it's completely open-ended... no particular path to follow...

They describe the food and supplies you pick up as "buffs"...

Yeah a very interesting take on the system. I can see Solo players and folks put off by pvp staying out of the "dark zones" or whatever it was called. But the risk vs reward probably gives you much better loot.

I want to be in the "The Division" PS4 clan. My current PSN name is Travaughn but I'll likely change the name when I go over to the PS4

I want to know if there's character creation... and if you can change your character's gear (clothes) and stuff.

I thought they were playing it with dualshocks?

Found it:

Now if I remember correctly, unlike the Xbone controller the DS4 (not even out) is not compatible with regular PCs. So in all likelihood that was the PS4 version.

My guess is yes and here's why. So let's say the F2P rumor is true, part of the microtransactions would no doubt be cosmetic stuff. So if they're smart they'd allow you to have a cosmetic tab so you can look however you want while having another tab for stat based gear.

Unfortunately I see this as being a Holiday 2014 title, and will be Ubisoft's 'Watch Dogs' of next year.

Thankfully the PS4 version will probably get some extra goodies as well as the technically superior version. If they really were playing on PS4, I'm impressed. This is the type of game where 30fps is just fine for all of the eye candy we get in exchange.

In that vid, dev said winter 2014

It's just that the characters look so well designed... like, really good.

Really didn't give much care when I heard about this game but like Trick I Shadow said....

Just catching up on this game now.....I’m kinda stunned! O_o
Damn, this has got to be the best looking MMO type of game I have ever seen! I'm not a big fan of this kind of genre, but this game has me sold. The graphics are amazing and the game just looks all around fun. I'm adding this to my wishlist.

So that video confirmed a few things:

- Single shard which means all players on one server.
- There's social/trade hubs where you'll be safe from being killed.
- Dark Zones are PvP specific areas, my guess is they'll put better loot and higher XP objectives in those areas to entice players so Risk vs Reward.
- There's a main storyline you go through but after you complete that there's still a lot to do content wise and it changes dynamically.
- No loading after the initial load time.
- PvE & PvP missions in the Dark Zones.
- Winter 2014 release

Sign me up. Game looks sweet.

Game scales... so, solo players have the baseline challenge, but as you add buddies, the game becomes more difficult and your rewards are increased (more XP, better loot) they seem to have a really intelligent matchmaking. Hopefully keeping solo players from getting ganked by pvp squads.

If I'm alive then I'll join (PS4 version, obviously). I just hope that this won't be a full time commitment though. Also, of course, the game has to be good in the end to justify the purchase. My PSN id is the gaf id.

DS3 is not compatible with regular PCs (natively at least) yet they played Watch_Dogs with one on a PC at last years E3.

One thing I think people forget, these guys are game developers, coders, engineers. I don't think it would be very hard for them to make a DS4 work with a PC.
