Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS: Info Collection - Dojo, Mega Man and Trailer! 2014!

I have tons of nostalgia for Sonic but I ended up never really choosing him because of how boring he was in brawl.

Bonus points if they can also spice up Sonic somehow, though I don't really know how. Spin Dash, Homing Ball, and run up and hit you is about the only things he's ever done in any game as far as I know.

I know how you feel, I was expecting so much from Sonic. It sucked to know he had two moves that were basically the same thing. His homing attack wasn't so great either, Project M fixed that!

I also, kind of expected him to play like he does in Sonic Battle. XP He even has a projectile in that game!

I don't see why people oppose clones. As the Sumo guys said with Sonic Racing Transformed, they take so little effort that it's not like they are taking the place of "real" characters. Having MeeMee in that game wasn't the reason for say any character's absence. And it's interesting to see a different approach to similar movesets. I'm all for a couple of clones, personally.

In watching the WiiFit Trainer video again, that was one of the things that made me miss a traditional press conference.

It would have been fun if they showed the Smash trailer right away, and then between segments showed the new challengers. WiiFit Trainer first, and then after the X trailer, show Mega Man. The audience reactions would have been fun to watch.

I'm probably gonna be trying out the WiiFit Trainer first. She looks fun.

So, gentlemen. Protoman is almost a shoe-in for a clone character.

What do you think?

I'd expect an assist trophy or a background character. Shadow appeared as an Assist in Brawl, while Tails, Knuckles and Silver were background characters in Green Kill Zone. I find it funny that they decided to fit both the classical trio and the Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) trio in Brawl. :lol

Tails should have been the Assist though, he's a more prominent character. Likewise for Protoman -- the two are the closest to Sonic and Mega Man's Luigi. Bass and Knuckles would also be cool as assists, I suppose.

No, but there shouldn't be any clones at all. Not even Luigi has an excuse now after Luigi's Mansion 2.

How about no clones, and just make him an alt costume along with like roll or something.

More clone bullshit is the last thing I fucking want in this game. If Wii Fit Trainer has to be in the roster so there can be no clones then I'm perfectly willing to sacrifice that roster spot, that should have gone to a much more deserving character of other franchises.

I hate "no clones".

SSB without clones is SSB with 11 characters.

Melee without clones is Melee with 20 characters.

Brawl without clones is Brawl with 34 characters.

Clones are not characters that take roster spots away. Clones are characters that they create to fill spots in the roster that didn't previously exist. They are characters intended to fill out the roster. A lack of clones doesn't fast-track your favourite character, it just makes for a smaller roster.

Nah, we need more caped characters.

It was inevitable.

Toon Link is fine the way he was in Brawl, though I'd welcome some slightly different specials and final smash
Ganondorf absolutely needs a new moveset
give Luigi some new specials (Poltergust 3000)
bring Pichu back!

I don't care about the other clones

Exactly.

There's generally no "slots" for characters. Again, if Wii Fit Trainer or clone character X wouldn't have made it in, the game would just be that character less, instead of another character.

The devs are not going to say "Okay guys, we got exactly 43.723 character spots to fill, whom are we gonna put in", they're gonna say "Alright, we've got this much time, let's see whom we can add - we'd like it to be around 40 characters". So they're putting an estimate. In the end, we might end up with more or with less characters than what their estimate is.

And then they put in the characters that they have to put in, like Mario, Link, etc., and then they select characters they think would enrich the game with fun playstyles and so on.

Since the general Smash Bros. thread is gone, I might as well post this here. Last night, I finally beat event 51 in Melee without dying. That was pretty brutal.

It took me a very long time before I accomplished that. I want more Event Matches. Legendary Pokemon was my favorite.

By the way, Sakurai just posted on Miiverse. It's not much, though. He just said he would need more time to complete the game.

Old?

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/13/wii-u-and-3ds-smash-bros-will-not-have-cross-platform-play-wil/

- each version of the game has completely different stages
- cross-platform play wouldn't work
- each version will interact with one another
- take characters you've customized and transfer them to the Wii U version
- customizatios won't be costumes and they won't be something that players have to unlock
- different costumes would take away from what makes each character unique
- wants to avoid boring, repetitive tasks
- "stress free, easy connectivity" between the two versions
- no comment on level editor

what do you think? it's a shame for the no cross platform, but I'm interested in seeing the connectivity about the "customized character transfer"

I wonder if this customized character stuff means that you can choose a character's moveset or something.

New pic of the day.

As a note, each picture is posted at a slightly higher resolution at this URL on the official website, in addition to Sakurai's Miiverse post of it.

Edit: Ninja'd, yes, but my picture won't change on Monday, unlike Tan's (he's linked directly to daily.jpg on the official site, which will change Monday to Friday each week).

You know, I was just thinking. It seems that Mega Man's moveset features weapons from 1-8, but then I realized there's nothing from 4 or 5. I know the developer video showed that he had the Top Spin. You suppose they left these out or there are moves we haven't seen yet?
There's the charged shot.

Don't give a shit. Clones are useless characters that to me scream lazy development. Can't make it into a full character? Make it into an alt costume, it'll have the same uses and not waste whatever time was put into making it into a clone that could have gone to something more productive. Unless the story behind the character is that he's a literal clone but has different moves (I think K' from SNK is supposed to be something like this?) then don't bother with putting him in. To me there's no argument that justifies a clone, the only clone I ever felt was acceptable was Luigi, but even now there's no point in him being a clone again when he has his own franchise and this entire marketing 'year' based around him.

Obviously it doesn't fast track some other character to be put into the roster, it's not a guarantee. I'd still rather have a smaller roster than one filled with unnecessary, unimaginative clones. It's awful, and before somebody from the hardcore fighting community comes in here to discuss how they aren't really clones because of different properties in their moves and whatnot. It doesn't matter. That only matters to the FGC of which there seems to be a large number who barely even consider Smash to be a real fighting game. To most of the other people, characters like Falco and Wolf are both clones of Fox, Ganondorf is a clone of C. Falcon, and Toon Link one of Link.

This gen more than any they have no excuses for clones. They have all the time they want to finish this game, they have Namco helping them, many of the characters have movesets which can be created or updated due to new game releases, they can even add them in later through DLC for fucks sake. So that bullshit argument about filling out a roster is done this gen. Clones in the new smash is just lazy game development.

EDIT: That comment on costumes is bullshit Sakurai. Different costumes can make an old character feel fresh again.

I thought the 3DS beat the GameCube and Wii in memory size by a substantial amount? If anything, it would be that the CPU in 3DS just isn't that great. Considering the amount of things that can be happening in Smash, if they want the game to run online, maintaining 3D and 2D compatibilty, (are they trying to hit 60fps with 3D on in this?) some things are gonna get pared down. It's down to sheer horsepower on this one, not game size or memory restraints.

You're right, the 3DS has twice the ram of the Wii, so that's unlikely to be the issue. And as I said, space isn't an issue, cart sizes could theoretically go as high as 128GB barring price constraints. Hmmm....

That comment on costumes is bullshit Sakurai. Different costumes can make an old character feel fresh again.

I think that he meant that it won't be custom costumes. I doubt anyone disagrees with the fact that costumes are an incredible feature of Smash Bros. for itself, but perhaps he has a point about custom ones. Not that I'd mind them, but I'm more curious about the reference material they will use for each character's alts.

How about no clones, and just make him an alt costume along with like roll or something.

While I mostly disagree with your line of thinking, I wouldn't mind this if they handled it delicately. If "alt characters" were an added tier between regular characters and costumes, it could work. I certainly think it would be an amateur design to add Falco in a way that he appears as one of Fox's costumes or something though. They shouldn't be costumes per se -- they could use the same moves, but adapted into their own style and merch, and with different taunts and voice-overs (which don't take too much of development time anyway). Perhaps there should be a special option in each slot to use an alt character based on the slot's main character. Or it could be an easter egg-like feature, like in Tekken.

So WFT's Final Smash was shown, and we've discussed Villager's Final Smash, but not much discussion of what MegaMan's Final Smash should be. What do you guys think?

I'm thinking Black Hole Bomb from Galaxy Man in MM9.

Who cares, I need new Villager images for new memes, damn!

Being serious, no news about it yet.

Damn!
I'd love a story mode that allow you to "customize" your character in terms of "RPG" combat values, and than transfer it from 3DS to Wii U and viceversa

I want a Subspace Emissary 2...

Somehow, I feel the story mode will follow Uprising's story formula this time around; divided into chapters and following a more linear scheme. Obviously, characters unlocking on the way and a "world colliding" feel unfolding all throughout the story. Perhaps the flying versus ground segments will be translated into soft-platforming versus boss fighting. Heh, this sounds perfect. :)

If they do something like that I'll give them money... A ton of money!
