Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

I'd rather have to do this and get rewarded instead of getting everything handed to me instantly at the beginning with no reward for finding everything.
It's not that rewarding if the required task feels like a chore. I'd rather just ditch the busywork item hunts altogether and have challenging platforming instead.

NSMBU's challenge mode is great. 3D Land's second quest is great (and little if anything of value would be lost had they just cut out the first quest entirely). I can definitely take or leave star coins and their equivalents.

what the fuck is up with the way the goombas look

there are two types of goombas in the game

regular ones:

super mario world-styled ones:

I'm not huge on star coins either, but they're easy to find if you use a guide, and they're fun to look for while you're playing. I like DKCR's Kong letters better though, in that they're easy to find but require difficult platforming maneuvers to attain. Definitely a better system imo, but I'd be happy if Mario included something like both. I like that DKCR unlocked the substantial secrets via things that were easy to find, and kept soundtracks and stuff linked to hard to find items. There's searching for those who want it, and gameplay for those who don't.

I do think it's crazy how many platformers WiiU is getting. I love platformers but... I can't imagine being somebody who wasn't fond of them, coming to grips with the WiiU library. Then again, that person probably wouldn't get a WiiU anyhow.

Just saw this gameplay video with Fire Peach. Looked great.

If this video's anything to go by, then 3D World won't be any more complex than 3D Land.

And that gives it a ceiling well below any of the Galaxy games.

It doesn't matter if Galaxy is as linear as 3D World in some stages, or if you can move the camera around to approximate the angles of the old games. That has very little to do with why people dislike this new approach. The fact is the '3D' series features a bunch of short, simple and repetitive levels that fail to match the scope and variety of the Galaxy games.

Here's the first stage from Galaxy 2:

And here's the first Bowser stage (world 2):

There's not a single level in 3D Land which comes close to what Nintendo came up with in these two (early) ones from Galaxy 2. The Bowser stages from 3D Land borrow their assets directly from Galaxy, but if you put them all together, you probably still wouldn't match the variety seen in the above video. Nothing I saw at E3 makes me think 3D World will be any different.

I'm sure the game will be fun, but it's a huge step down from what these same guys accomplished just three years ago.

kind of pervy goomba trying to take the clear warp pipe while peach is standing on it
The other Goomba is kind of pervy, too, trying to see if Peach is wearing a low-cut top today.

I'm guessing we are helping the Subcon fairies defeat Wart who is probably commissioned by Bowser to rule Subcon or whatever they want to call this floating dreamworld environment.
Oh man, if those pink fellas really are Subcon fairies, and if Wart really is behind everything (which would be yet another totally awesome SMB2 reference, on top of the four players), this game will be SO AMAZING. But then, it does appear we're dealing with Bowser's minions here... Hmm...

Nothing I saw at E3 makes me think 3D World will be any different.

The large worlds, the huge swimming Yoshi, and the underground snake boss battle makes me think this game will retain Galaxy's imagination and combine it with the pure play of 3D Land.

Glad to see the Toad Brigade come back. I loved them in the Galaxy games, provided some great humor. That is something 3D Land lacked especially since there was no real dialogue for the NPCs and a lack of NPCs in the levels of 3D Land.

Also, there was the Captain Toad in the clear pipes level wasn't there? There was something odd about the thing going through the pipe at the end.

It is funny that you used the first level in galaxy 2 as an example, I watched the video and made me realize how far the camera is from Mario, and how many sections it has that you are almost playing like in 2D Style( the camera basically position itself parallel to where Mario is standing). And other where the camere is on on top of Mario.

The option is there for those people who don't like the whole fixed camera angles.

You can play the entire game in third person? I thought you could only temporarily change the viewpoint and will automatically go to top down view again.

I agree with lensoftruth. A lot of people complain about the game not being a SMG game, but imo that's how a Wii U SMG would have looked like, but only with a third person camera.

I would assume using the right stick will make it fixed. You can't use the right stick and press the jump buttons so yea.

Personally, I found 3D Land to control the best out of all 3D Mario games. Though previous ones didn't control bad, it just felt that 3D Land was superior in the controls department due to not worrying about the camera and the way you can go in straight lines a lot easier.

What? Seriously? Can I get a link?

You can also use the right stick instead.

Why why why... they fuck is it blue toad... and not the real toad... so disappointed right now.

Not even joking, give me Toad damn it!

Blue Toad is original SMB2 Toad. (He was red in All-Stars, but blue in NES version.)

Anyway, screw the haters. This game looks amazing and will be an ample appetizer before we inevitably get our true Galaxy sequel. I cannot believe that ANYONE would think that A) this looks like a 3DS game or B) that this doesn't look amazing.

The real answer is probably that they were gonna go with blue and yellow Toad again before they decided on Peach (They already stated that they weren't going to make Peach playable at first.), and it's just a coincidence that the original SMB2 Toad was blue.

I highly, highly doubt this. Having all 4 of them with unique skills is an unquestionable direct nod to SMB2.

But why have 2 Toads that play the same? I thought the whole point of being able to chose which of the characters you play as is because they all have different abilities.

Has this video been linked yet? Seems to show that there's quite a bit of secrets in the level and that it's not just one linear path quite well

brilliant, thanks for this. I mus admit I was left a bit cold after the reveal trailer, but every single video I saw after it reignited my hype for this game. Now I can't bleedin' wait

Really bugs me that the last few NSMB games have had two toads and didn't even replace one with Peach when you finished the game. We finally get Peach. If only they could retroactively add her back to the last two Wii games.

I'm glad we finally FINALLY got the original SMB2 cast complete with each one's special abilities, except Mario who has always been sooooo plain in that game. I mean did anyone even use Mario in SMB2? He didn't do anything! Anyway, as long as they LET ME PLAY AS ANY CHARACTER in SINGLE PLAYER. I don't know how NSMBWU does it, but the Wii version forced single player to play as Mario and only 2, 3 and 4 could pick the other characters. WTF? Does the Wii U version do this too?

This game looks like it'll be a hell of a lot of fun even as one person. As long as I can play as Peach or Luigi or Toad whenever I want and not just Mario if I'm a single lonely person. DON'T SCREW THIS ONE UP, NINTENDO.

Going by the demos you can play as whoever you want in single player. Obviously this doesn't necessarily confirm anything as they can screw it up on the final release, but it's a good sign.

I don't see the big deal in the New series as each character plays exactly the same (except New Super Luigi U)

It's because of this game, Mario Kart 8 and NSMBU that I'm considering to get one for my cousins. Are there any notable co-op games? They are still kids under 10.

The only downside is Wii U has no presence in my country so I'm not sure if their friends are ever getting one too. Not even Wii sets my country on fire, it has always been PC, PS & Nintendo handhelds thanks to Pokemon.

They mentioned in the developer direct that they expect most speedrunners and experts to use Toad so I'd say its pretty much confirmed you can.

NSMBU, Mario 3D World, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze all have full-on co-op modes. Donkey Kong may be a bit difficult for kids under 10 though based on DKCR. Oh yeah and Nintendo Land. My little cousin also enjoyed Epic Mickey 2 which has co-op mode.

Oh yeah I remember that. Fantastic news.

I don't know. I'm not really a speedrunner/expert, but in 3D Land, I did feel that way lol. I try to get the fastest times in each level and it seems that Toad's jump is really week. He can run, but I feel it is not good enough.

The part where be ground pounds a coin block and it gets stuck on his head with coins racking up is great.

I wonder if its a way to mock your friends who go underneath to collect coins, then bam, stuck to the guys head and his score is racking up.
