Shouldn't she be in the house?
sorry, but Mariah would not have been a field slave.
she would have been a
house slave.
It is extraordinarily unlikely that someone of Mariah's complexion would have been a field slave. Unlikely enough to make it difficult to suspend disbelief.
Exactly.
Also I seriously doubt they couldn't find a qualified black actress for the role. Nia Long? Taraji Henson? Sanaa Lathan?
No... you had to get Mariah Carey, who only became black after she married Nick Cannon.
This is why the one drop rule sucks.
Well, really Mariah was reveling in her blackness for years before she met Nick Cannon.
She's always had somewhat urban leanings, even in her early Pop years.
Robin Williams returns to film and it ends up being this shit?!
Yeah, she did that to sell records. She was fence sitting to maximize her racial background for commercial gain. So in her videos she was always with white dudes. Before Nick Cannon, I only saw her dating/marrying white guys.
Then after she marries Nick Cannon, she's now pro-black, and only black. I saw her on George Lopez saying that she only considers herself a black woman. Yeah, I wonder when that happened.....
Shouldn't she be in the house?
Not to diss who you were quoting, but this is NeoGAF man. Look at how many people seriously thought Beyonce was full white.
It totally contradicts history, yeah. Someone as light-skinned as Mariah would've been a house slave; A maid or a nanny.
I mean, she's waaaaaaaay too light to work in a field.

Was this before or after Tommy Mottola passed her around?
No, it doesn't. There were white looking slaves working in the fields too.

I wanted to reach through the television and smack her fake ass.
... But she's always identified as black. Even at the beginning of her career she had interviews in Ebony or on Oprah where she discussed her racial background, and identified as black. It is certainly true that her management took advantage of her racially ambiguous looks and generally steered clear of music that was too, well, "urban" for lack of a better euphemism, but it's worth noting that when she got to do the sort of record she wanted, she went for much more heavily urban music and her sales suffered immensely for it. She lost almost half the sales her previous album garnered. And this is something she's stuck with in the last 16 years whether she was doing well with it or not.
This idea that her identifying as black is some new thing that she's just taking advantage of is silly.
I don't think that women who are black and proud would date and/or marry a string of white men.

No, she identified as mixed-race for many years. Which is why I was surprised that she suddenly became "black and proud". I don't think that women who are black and proud would date and/or marry a string of white men. Especially old dirtbags like Tommy Mottola.
Heck, just a few years ago she wanted to be a role model for mixed race people;
http://www.contactmusic.com/news-article/mariah.-.-my-mission-to-be-a-mixed.race-role-model.
Now she doesn't even want to talk about her other heritages because "its so hard being a black woman".
Black and proud women, or any women for that matter, can date any kind of man they want to. Fuck off.
Ohhhhhhhh! Won't you PLEASE tell us why you think this is the case?
Mariah Carey has always acknowledge being biracial. It was never a secret. Tommy Motola tried to market Mariah as the white Whitney Houston but failed. Lol. Once she got from under Tommy Motola notice how her image and music change drastically to a more "urban" sound. However, like Halle Berry, Mariah has had some difficulty with being biracial which is really as it relates to how other people perceives her.
I've always believed her relationship with Tommy Motola was for business purposes only. He gave her her career.
Measley has a very passionate dislike of black women. Ignore him.
Shouldn't she be in the house?
Still cant believe some people argue to death that she is black.

LoL! Most of my family are black women. I have nothing but love for them. I just dislike celebrities being phony and taking advantage of people. Carey has zero integrity.
How old are you if you don't mind me asking? Don't know why you seem so pressed by her. Why do you remember what she said from a random George Lopez interview but not anything from previous interviews or her legendary career up until that point? To fill you in though, she's been black since she's been born. Her father was black. Actually every one of her videos has black guys in them to be honest. And her Fantasy Remix Video/song basically revolutionized pop by infusing rap with a very popular pop song by a female artist. That took place about oh i don't know, more than ten years before she met Nick Cannon.
You forgot the part where she ended up ditching Eric Roberts and hitching with (part African-American) Wentworth Miller.I'm in my mid 20s, and I remember when she was Mariah the mixed race singer. I also remember when she was making out with white dudes in Honey, dating Jerry O'Connell in Sweet Heart, and marrying Eric Roberts in that newer song (which I forget).
And what does that have to do with her? She can't alter her genes. It's not like she had any control over her appearance. She's black in name only, and she's the personification of why racial politics in the U.S. is stupid and unjust. She gets to enjoy the acceptance of black people, and the benefits of having a white appearance. Its pretty fucked up all the way around.
I haven't seen this much puzzlingly misplaced resentment since Londa's escapades.

I thought Muhammad Ali's view on miscegenation was an artifact of his generation's upbringing. Depressing to learn that some younger people (who should really know better) still think that blacks should be with black and whites should be with white.
And what does that have to do with her? She can't alter her genes. It's not like she had any control over her appearance.

Most people wouldn't know that Miller is part African American unless someone tells you that he is. If the goal was to get a mixed race person, or a black person, why choose Miller who is pretty much a white person?
Because it all about optics.
I never said that. I have no problem with interracial marriages. I'm in one myself. I have a problem with people "coming home" when it suits their business plan. Alicia Keys kept it real from the getgo. This chick has been wishy-washy for decades.
She had control over her public persona. ESPECIALLY after divorcing Motola.
I wonder how popular she would be if she looked like Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, or India Airie.
I think the point everyone is trying to make, though, is that Mariah never did anything to hide her racial background. So how is she wishy-washy?
Maybe Mariah's racial changeover was a result of finally divorcing Tony Motola. I don't know. I just noticed she became "black and only black" after she married Nick Cannon and her career stalled out.
Are you kidding me? Slavery was about unpaid 9 to 5 shifts and the occasional beating, not centuries' long demoralizing human rights violations. It's interesting that some people don't realize how prevalent slave rape and mixed race children were, and how it lead to the entire issue of skin tone and desirability/status in the black community afterwards.
Most of us in the black community have some white blood somewhere in the family.
She was mixed race, now she's only black.
Wishy-washy.
I also remember when she was making out with white dudes in Honey, dating Jerry O'Connell in Sweet Heart, and marrying Eric Roberts in that newer song (which I forget).

I keep reading the title was Mary Carey for some reason. lol That would be awesome.
If I were to take a guess, I doubt landowner's wife had much power or could do anything about an affair. I read somewhere that affairs were more accepted back then (on the man's part of course), hell folks used to write to their brother in-laws and brag about their side action. Compare that to this message board where OPs want to snitch on their own sister for cheating lol.I am kinda puzzled by the way slavery is discussed in here. Seems like a mine field to me. Does someone actually have a source for the argument that a slave of lighter skin color would have worked in the house? Wouldn't a landowner that raped a slave put his offspring as far away from his family as possible? Or did they feel no shame in such acts at all?
Wow you are taking that Lopez interview way too serious, lol. Fact is she's still multi-racial. And she can identify herself anyway she pleases. I'm trying to understand why you are so upset by this though?
What is your point???? These are videos by the way, she never really dated Jerry O'Connell or married Eric Roberts. What does it matter what color the people are in her videos that play her love interest??? You do realize its 2013 I hope.
OP embarrasses self trying to shade on Mariah, should've expected that tho...at least Measley came in to help you save face
that would've been a very different movie
would still fap
Again, because Mariah Carey went from constantly bragging about being multi-racial to only being black. Interesting choice to make in your late thirties don't you think?
I don't really remember her publicly dating black men in real life either. In fact, I remember being surprised when she suddenly married Nick Cannon, because I had never seen her being romantically linked to black men at any point during her career.
My point is that even after gaining control over her image and her music, she still only had white men in her videos as romantic partners.
In any case, now that she married a black man, and considers herself "black and proud", she can more easily take black roles away from black people. Zoe Saldana should take notes.
Why does what people see you as matter more than how you see yourself?
I don't believe that society's assumptions should ever take priority over something that is personal to your identity.
